Do yourself a favour, just buy one brand name set, and see the difference. I never listened to people who said it to me either. I just kept buying cheapies and in fact preferred no sunnie at all. But they really do make a difference. I dont know about $300 worth of difference, and there is clearly some overpricing in there, but I dont regret buying them so much so that after a number of years, I bought a second pair of polarised RB’s, this time Aviators.
Your eyes will really thank you if you spend hours behind the wheel. Theyre pretty good.
I cared that you essentially invited people to post links to counterfeit sellers here on BLF. Posting links to a seller can be interpreted as promotion, and afaik promoting counterfeit goods is illegal in the US and many other countries. So you effectively invited people to break BLF rule #5, and that’s not cool. That was the extent of my care.
Whether you buy counterfeits or not in real life is none of my business and I really don’t care. But I would appreciate it if you wouldn’t break forum rules and use BLF as the place to do it.
I paid about $100 for both my pairs of oakleys. They do good deals in their discount stores. I wear my RB aviators a lot of the time now, especially driving. I also have a pair of American Optical Aviators that were like $40 - a very good pair of sunglasses, the lenses are great. I have a lightweight pair of Maui Jim’s I wear a lot in the summer. Again, very good sunglasses IMO.
You don’t have to buy Oakley, but buying from a good sunglasses company is better than buying fakes I think.
To test UV protection, shine a UV light at
a stain of cat spray, and use your fake sunglasses
as a filter over the LED. If you have a light meter you could
use that in some way. If the cat pee stain does not glow,
you might have decent UV protection.
if you are in nyc go to canal street, you’ll find plenty of such glasses, i’ve bought many pairs of polarised glases there, $20 you can get good pair, not fake brand names, just glasses with no name.
Oakly had a facebook post yesterday they’re having a $25 sale, didnt look at any details or what models and when but they had a huge poster. Maybe look into that but I’m sure it wont last long.
I have seen Oakleys at “Marshalls” discount stores cheap. I have bought several pairs from eBay for $75-$100. You just have to be very careful of what you buy from eBay, and have to know what you are looking at. I got “burned” on one pair, they were GasCans, they were legit, but the lenses were TRASHED and the frames were a little beat up, like one stem had what looked like teeth marks on it. The guy initially offered a refund, then came up with a million and one excuses on his delay. I opened a eBay case and LOST…. because eBay was convinced I had buyers remorse, even after I sent them all the contact with him saying he would refund. The pictures he had didn’t show the damage, nor was it mentioned. After he won he was no longer a registered user, go figure. I paid$48 for the glasses. Then found genuine fire iridium replacement lenses for ~$48. So at least now they are usable.
I know with the RB you need to be careful not of fakes, but of the genuine thing that is monstrously subpar. I bought a pair of RB for the beach (I have several $300+ pairs and love them but dont like to use them at the beach). When i got them they seemed odd so I took them to my usual source and compared them with the friendly staff. The frames were the same, legit. But the lens was different. It was simply a darker lens without any of the selling points associated with RB. They are legit RB releases, but not RB lenses. In other words, not intended for advanced markets like Aus, US, Canada or Europe etc. Its cheap for a reason. Beware.
They would work fine as glasses, but compared to the real deal they dont stack up, they are just $30 chemist or service station glasses, with a nice frame.
“rojos” - In the US it is not illegal to purchase goods that are ‘unreal’ or ‘copies’, this you are correct.
It is illegal to sell it, only if you violate any copyright boundaries it may have in place. You are allowed to “Build-a-better-mousetrap”, even a cheaper one, but it has to be your mousetrap.
Giving someone information as to where they can buy ‘knock-off’ goods is NOT illegal unless you are connected to the seller financially and they are in copyright violation.
Now somebody coming on this forum to ask where they can buy “Foakleys”, really has no place here. IMHO.
BTW, the market on the casino side of Grand Bahama Island, had lots of them….
If you say so. However, I know that lawsuits have been won over copies many times. I own a few “lawsuit” guitars. These are guitars made in Japan to look feel and play exactly like Fenders or Gibsons but with different names on them. I think there was only one actual lawsuit and it only covered a specific model but all the copies from that time frame are now called lawsuit models. After the lawsuit companies in Japan changed the headstocks so that they were not exact copies.
