Bold claims from Lumileds. If these claims are true this would be the ultimate domeless LED, but I doubt it to be honest. I think I will order some and test them.
Then we will see what is only marketing and what is true in reallife use.
189 lm/W from a domeless LED sounds like a complete revolution of the market if it turns out to be true. And then it’s even a small LES LED, that sounds crazy.
I might be missing something as I don’t yet see how this LED would be revolutionary.
The article initially states an LES of 2.16mm^2, but later reveals the dimensions to be 2.16mmx2.16mm, which is around 4.67mm^2. (The article appears to be written by a marketer, not someone familiar with the technical details of the product.) Thus the 189lm/W at 700mA is basically on par with the SFT40 or new XPL-HI.
The claimed 1400lm at 3.5A is exactly on par with the SFT40 per this test, but in exchange for a smaller footprint the HL4Z achieves comparable flux by using an LES that is 16% larger, which compromises intensity.
Oh I missed that. That makes it a lot less interesting. The efficiency out of a 2mm² LES would have been amazing for small pocket throwers, or all-rounders with tiny optics. But if it’s actually 4.5mm² it’s nothing new or particularly crazy. Just another good option on the market. Might be interesting for lights like TS10 or FWAA where one can not reasonably fit a 5050.
I noticed them on the day they were released, but the official site has the wrong description, it apparently has a big LES. It’s not 2.16mm2, it’s 2.16mm*2.16mm, and has a low max current. Sorry I don’t see anything special about this emitter.
