a bit of offtopic - I see a bunch of people on BLF building these UV lights - what’s their purpose ?
Toys.
They do some real job’s (like finding stains and other crap) but I just want a really really expensive toy (the TN30 is even more money than the single emitter L2c)
From the LZ1 datasheet:

For me, it has a purpose… I want to put some trits on a few of my lights and plan on using Norland Optical Adhesive. This is a clear epoxy that stays clear and is cured with 365nm UV light. Hence, the powerful UV emitter. ![]()
It also serves to show if currency is real or counterfeit, blood stains, urine stains, all manner of uncleanliness when you think things are spic and span. It will also sanitize tootbrushes and contact lenses as well as dentures (if you have those). Could possibly be used to kill germs at a wound site before applying a dressing but I need to dig into that further. (Reaching, to warrant the expense to my CNA wife.)
A couple of uses for my UV light:
We use different colour florescent plumbing dyes to do water testing to find leaks in building waterproofing and roofing systems. The dye really lights up when you hit it with UV thus proving a specific leak path.
Also curing norland optical adhesive, and following blood trails at night when hunting are some secondary uses.
ok, so I see a purpose. It seems jut a little bit more expensive than a regular LED lamp. But I’m worried about retina damage.
Don’t forget Ac/ HVAC system leak detection.
And yes- never shine it in your eyes’s!
Most are dyslexic people that really wanted to build an ultra-violent light. J)
I rmebsle taht ramrek!
My light can kick your lights ass.
Got mine running tonight. Took an 8 chip qlite and pulled off 5 chips for a total current of 1A. soldered star 4 for 20% and 100% output modes and jammed everything in a brass light i picked up from CQG a while back. Looks bad ass and the output is freaking amazing. on low it outperforms my 3w fasttech uv light by a wide margin. On high it turns my transitions glasses to ultra dark in a few seconds. Even the sun takes longer.
Cheers,

Is there a UV board small enough to fit on the pillar of a POP-lite?
I was afraid to keep 3 chips, thought 1140 might exceed the 1000 max by too much and wasn’t willing to gamble it with this expensive emitter. It performs pretty awesomely at 730mA, so it’s all good. ![]()
Do you feel heat in that brass host? If I run mine very long I can feel the head of the L2m warming a little…certainly not hot by any means but there’s some warmth to it.
I also kept mine at as near 700mA as I could get it because of the datasheet, they show it makes 365nm at 330 and 700mA most accurately with some deviation in wavelength with less or more current and in between those 2. I hope to be using it to set some optical adhesive with a few trits, so I thought it might be important. Don’t know how much difference it’d make.
3 chips runs around 1.03A measured at the tail with this hoast and I have run it for a while now without any problems, but she does get hot. I would be nervous to cure any norlland Adhesive with it running this hot, im almost sure it would overheat. With my old fasttech light i would run a full 3400 mah 18650 through it overnight and i would only have a partial cure by morning (I live i Vancouver so in the winter when i have time to mess with trits and lights its never sunny). With this one i bet you get a full cure in a hour or so but I would definitely not leave this one running at +1A for an hour for sure. I think you are best to keep 700ma for curing and even then you might want to use a heat sink of some kind to keep your light cool. Im thinking about pulling another chip or finding a driver with a good middle mode around 500-700. What are you making with the trits ? i love tritium:

I used one of Mattaus’s copper shells and filled in with one of Richard’s copper spacers. Lot’s of copper under this one.
I want to put a few trits on some lights, and probably on my new Spyderco Sage 2 with Ti frame lock. ![]()
Nice pic, by the way! ![]()
Edit: Um, you DO realize that this emitter has a luminance output probably 8x greater than almost anything else out there short of the very expensive Nichia? And even at that, it’s as good or a bit better than the Nichia. Might not take as long to cure as you think.

Cheers,
Something does not look right about that picture. Is it a photo or a collage or what?
ya i didnt know it was going to be this powerful when i got it, just better than what i had already. do you get a fair bit of visible yellowish light off of yours ? the specs say next zero over 500nm so im wondering if my driver is affecting output a bit?
ahhh the Sage 2, one of my top 5 all time fav knifes for sure. you going to put 2 trits in the LHS clip grooves ? i have often thought about doing that. post some pics if you do. I might do the same tomorrow if my NOA is still good.

Is that an focused uv led zoomie or a 405nm, 445nm laser? ![]()
got it last time i was in Beijing, some guy was shining it in the crowd at night to get people to come over and see what he was selling. he told me it was really safe cause it was an LED just as he was lighting his cigarette with it. thought I better buy it from him before he blinded me with it ;).
