Olympic silliness ?

Wow +1

haha… no kidding 8)

Two more for the “list.”

True that!

(I was just watching gymnastic, and… ) What I forgot to mention in reply to one commenter, is that China (I mean if you comment something, than you have to know something about it; and also when I comment things, I dont like to comment exclusively from one stand point of view, I try to be objective) is comparatively still poor country in comparison to western countries. Not every small town there probably doesnt have gymnastic trainer or something, usable gym etc, I mean if you dont know how poverty looks go to some poverty stricken country or in some povertxy sticken parts of USA dand youll see.
SO thats most certainly part of the reason why some of these talented girl gymnast train long way from home, in so called “internats” etc. And its really, in my eyes, even greater accomplishment (if we are talking about accomplishments but I dontlike that comparisons so much), if someone succeded to be best in some sports, who had to go away from his or hers family, who lived in poverty etc.

Its more or lesss the same in whole world, only in very developed countries is different, and there every athlete has good conditions. In many european countries lots of champions stemmed out of environment with inadequate conditions for training. Its not just USA thing, if it is it’s thing at all.

Uf, I dared to touch the “god of competition”, probably thats why there’s so many complaints :oo
Uf, so sorry

So surely you’re aware that about 400,000 Chinese from around the country train at specialist schools at any given time and from that pool several thousand are hand picked to be enrolled in one of the “elite” schools with all expenses paid.

It doesn’t matter if they come from poor villages in mainland China. When it’s a government agenda and said government is probably the strongest in the world, it doesn’t matter how wealthy a prospective athlete is. The government will foot the bill if it means gold and glory.

There was a story about one athlete who wasn’t even aware one of his parents was deathly ill because his trainers decided he didn’t need to lose focus by possessing this knowledge. After all, most successful athletes spend years at these facilities and barely see their family during this time.

I’m just stating my reasons why I don’t need to defend them. I’ll stay out of their business.

Think i could scrape a bronze with this one lol

Still no ignore feature on this site? I looked around and didn’t see one.

Ok I really dont know why China has same number or more medals than USA, it surely must be because of doping, or maybe because of more help from the state… something else ?
Chicago x what do you think, if you can even say something civilised when someone has different oppinion?

PS: Oh yes, I forgot, maybe the reason is that some wrong, silly sports are on the Olympics?

Wow they had the blinders on. The US team were spiking, kneeing, shoving elbowing and getting away with it at every turn. There were no calls on hand balls against the US despite repeated occurrences. Frustrating to watch.

Dirty play + biased officiating = Hollow victory

Olympic silliness, protecting the golden record of the US womens team….

Yeahh but why accuse some other nation when you do the same thing. Everyone who isnt American noticed that. (on doping example).
ALso, how many young Americans play basketball in state schools or something like that?
SO its wrong that China has somewhat different system?

Of course that every way has it shortcomings, and too many of them, Chinese themselves are noticing that and there is major debate in Chinese public about that case (though you cannot know that if you just read and watch one-sided propaganda), but what maximally gets on my nerves is when someone is accusing somebody for something while being not much different at all from the one he accuses. while doing practically same thing.

Its the same thing with corruption in developing countries. There is fame around a world how those countries are maximally corrupt, more than others etc (and some say, thats why they dont deserve much help), when the real truth is that in developed countries there is also a lot, and I mean a lot, of corruption, but of more sophisticated kind, and more expertly hidden. . But thats being revealed every day too.

Same as millions of Chinese workers whose products you are buying for few bucks.

LOts of similar was seen in gimnastycs judging.

Don’t take me wrong, it is a shame doping exists, wherever it is, it has happened also with spanish cyclists, etc etc, and I do not cover it because they are from my country, but I see Pau Gassol for example who in months playing the NBA looked like he had eaten the same hulk does, and it is not made by playing more games per month than in Europe.

Yeah for example if some Swiss coach says something stupid, I would admit it without hesitation and I would say that he’s not very bright, even though he’s from Switzerland, it doesnt matter.

But, I wouldnt know he’s not very bright if Im not very bright too :d

The Men’s gymnastic controversy was pretty funny. Japan get’s silver cuz of 1 bad handstand. Wow I can’t believe it all came down to like .xx points. Korean fencer loses in sudden death,
Also the women’s badminton. The Chinese lost to danish or something and told it’s players to lose, in order not to face each other later, resulting in 8 people being disqualified. I have a youtube link to the 1908 olympics controveries too if anybody wants to watch. London is always funny to watch history. From 1980/1984 cold war boycott. In which US protest Russian invasion of Afghanistan, now 30 years later US invades Afghanistan, where is the russian boycott to return favor? Let’s not forget the racial tweets? Of course they later ask for apology, funny ain’t it when people don’t have publicists.

Today judges (6 or seven of them? :o) didnt notice that one gymnast, in jump over the (word?), didnt rotated 3 times as he supposed to, but just 2 times  SOme time later they corrected mistake and corrected their grades.
Well, judging is often controversial  In sailing too udges have large margin when to penalize someone and when not to penalize him.
And in wrestling we have challenges now  Coaches can challenge judges decisions.

The Olympics are FUN! :weary:

I think some people are missing the point. I don’t care if China wins more medals every single Olympics. It doesn’t prove anything. Just like how the USA has dominated for so many decades now. I think it’s safe to say we’ve had an advantage for at least 50 years. No one is truly on the same level of play. What might be the most telling, however, is once some American(s) express criticism towards China then immediately we have hoards of internationals slamming the USA at every turn. I enjoy having the millions of Swedes, Germans, Italians, Chinese, etc here. I wonder if they share the same opinions of those overseas. I also enjoy supporting entrepreneurs like Ric. What I won’t do is lend support to the Chinese government. I don’t support oppressive, communist regimes. Deal with it.

Maybe this thread will segue into the utopia that is North Korea! haha

Anyway, I’m all for adding more silly sports. After all, they might finally add one that I have a minute chance of being competitive in!

Yea it’s really silly. For Example NBC or American media in general has some fascinating with China failing. They have a clip on NBC Olympics on China men falls. Then have a clip on an American gymnastic doing a “howto” vault… then later have her in a, “fail” video. Only thing I miss about the 80s & 90s Olympics was the Russian domination. People also poke fun at India being so populous and producing like 0 gold, it’s hilarious yet very racial too.

One last note, anybody noticed the tape on athletics this year? From weightlifting to syncro. diving?
