you get it wrong. I can just walk away and nothing would happen to me. I am not responsible for the whole stuff, you know? I’m not representative of the whole team, even the whole company. I gave this link to superiors, whether because their English is not good or they even don’t care, I don’t know. there is a saying “人微言轻”, you can google its meaning.
I googled it for you. it means, what lowly people think counts for little. and you even think I am high up in the ladder, that’s kidding.
I’m just responsible for my own part of technology aspect stuff. that’s all.
Please stop harassing Yong.
You can request a refund via the retailer.
Yong has taken the time to identify the gap and is trying to close that gap. I.e. Test more lights and identify appropriate calibration coefficients to load via a firmware update.
You need to calm down, you’re beginning to sound like a conspiracy nut. He’s doing a lot, that he’s under no obligation to. Ultimately, the company makes a lot of lighting stuff like smart lighting systems, we are an edge case and I can tell you, most companies don’t really care that much about a smallish group of people into an extremely niche application for their product, that is first and foremost designed to complement a room lighting system.
They really do not care about a few dozen returns at most (especially since it seems like a lot of people here are electing to keep their LM4 in the hopes of an update), when their general production and scale of distribution will be at the very, very least many thousands, and at the price point it is, probably more like minimums in the the tens of thousands to be worth the engineering effort. Most likely any returned ones will end up with updated firmware, maybe a new calibration if needed, and back for sale again maybe at a slight discount. Companies consider things like that the cost of doing business - it’s good that they’re listening to the early adopters, and it’s why in the same position, for professional purposes, I and people I know do try to stay aware of any social media sentiment about systems we are responsible for.
Also, ultimately it’s a $30 product, not a $300 one, where to get even the same entire featureset in a full-on photospectrometer is $400+ if you find a great deal on a used one, or $600+ new. I would be a lot more pissed off if the latter was true and I paid hundreds for my LM4 too (but then I’d literally just return for a refund…).
For a $30 product this level of dedication to getting it right and improving it is amazing. $30 barely even gets you any kind of decent light - a TS10 and not much else, maybe. I lose more than $30 on throwaway YOLOs on the stock market and don’t care at all. If you had any doubts in the first place, could have just waited - being an early adopter is always risky, and Opple are being great about accepting returns.

Fair enough, I definitely can tone it down a bit and will say I’m sorry for escalating a bit, I just don’t want @stevechang to feel like his effort isn’t appreciated here when anyone who’s actually done development for a living knows he’s really going above and beyond and I’ve seen companies withdraw official social media engagement for less…
Yes all it takes is one person with misplaced anger to end what has been a good asset to BLF.
Were I that angry about a $30 device I would contact the company CEO, marketing Chief, chief of R&D, testing director, Chief of software development. IOW someone that make different decisions going forward… or maybe refund that whopping $30.
To beat up on the only person we have that has at least some insight on what is going on… and has shown a willingness to share some of what he knows, is most certainly counterproductive! While also hurting the rest of us who would like to continue to be, at least, somewhat informed on the ongoing process.
@wolfgirl42 , I don’t think there is much to “tone down” form your perspective. You have remained quite civil. Only one side of this discussion has been offered with irrationally vindictive and belittling comments attached. It is not yours.
I understand, and thanks for helping to keep the peace.
Also I agree that it’s great to have @stevechang actively interacting with the community and I would encourage him to continue, just keep in mind that once a fact or opinion has been stated there’s no need to repeat it if someone disagrees.
Yep, most of the time when I get into an idiotic conversation, it’s because both sides of the conversation are just repeating facts/opinions.
I have a tough time finding an offramp when that happens, so I should just stop posting (in that particular thread) when that happens.
So the Light Master 4 app still doesn’t work properly? (sorry I didn’t read the whole thread)
There is some update in Play Market: version 3.3.2, dated 19-Aug. But I don’t know if it’s fixed or not, I don’t have LM3 to compare.
Changelog from Play Market:
- Added report function for the Light Master
- Optimized user experience
In version 4 something has changed when measuring IR light? Version 3 showed miracles when measuring 850nm spotlights.
The LM3 is not made for measuring IR. What happens might be the blue sensor picking up more of the harmonic 425nm than the deep red sensor gets from the 850nm. Just a theory, but still, you’re measuring out of specs and therefore get nonsensical results.
You are completely right, LM is not for IR measurements. And you can control extraneous IR radiation, when measuring any light source? Or maybe the light source also gives IR radiation. What will you get for the result then?
Interesting question. My guess would be that IR picked up by the sensors will be significantly less intense than white light - except you shine an IR spot onto the LM. Test it with an IR cut filter.
I noticed this effect when I was working on IR projectors.
Even simple luxmeters have IR filters and do not react to IR radiation.
The IR filter should be between the diffuser and the sensor and maybe it will distort the readings of the device. I don’t have an IR filter of this size and known characteristics (((
You could try measuring in darkness in the presence of a heat radiator. In a normal dark room, I get 0 lx. To have a significant impact, the reading should increase with a radiator, correct?
Edit: I did. Aluminum at 50 °C right in front of the diffusor - still 0 lx.
A heated radiator gives far IR, and 850nm is near IR, but it is still invisible to the human eye, but is detected by the LM.
Near IR is in sunlight, light from xenon lamp and similar strongly heated light sources.
Ok. Do you now the power density of your spot on the diffuser?
No. I now know that this device is !@#$ up in some situations ))) And everybody needs to know that. I was really curious what changed in version 4 about this. I wrote about this problem to the manufacturer.
