’oogle “Moon M5 flashlight” and “Moon M6 flashlight” for other sources
Search “Z1” and “Z2” here — several threads. I had Z1s from a while ago, they use the 123 cell.
Got Z2s preferring the AA cell.
I like the Z2 fine, bought two from FastTech (I liked the first one so much I figured I needed a spare, and sure enough, I did — darn it — the switch in my daily-used Z2 failed after 10 months of daily use).
The Z2 is 5-mode Hi-med-low-strobe-SOS — switch got a lot of exercise.
Z1 head works on a Z2 tube. The Z1 is 3-mode, Hi-low-strobe (and not as bright when used with the battery from the Z2, but high is plenty bright enough for my use)
I don’t know what the “Moon” lights are like yet, but their AA says it’s 3-mode.
Crank, I sure hope you’ll post more about modding, whichever of these you take as a host.
I haven’t found one yet that I can take apart.
(but I’m not particularly good at modding.
Heck, I’m striving for mediocre)
I am not much of a modder myself hank. I am basically going to swap the emitter and driver for to make the light brighter. I found this link on a russian flashlight forum that show the guts of a trustfire z1 I can’t tell by the driver if it can be modded. Looking at the pictures of the driver can it be modded or swapped?
> Shadow L1 flashlight
Nice but for $38, someone else has to work out what that’s worth.
Oh, look, several people have … Shadow L1
> Z1
Dang, HOW did they get that taken apart?
can’t tell if I see gouges on the white plastic parts, which is all I can imagine doing to get those open
theres this one
ultrafire uf h6
has gotten pretty good praises but i honestly dont like this light much. its not the exact style your lookin for but similar
i dont like it because the switch is so damn hard to press to turn the light on and off.
its tiny and takes a good amount of pressure. http://www.lightmalls.com/ultrafire-uf-h6-cree-xm-l-t6-5-mode-800-lumen-led-headlamp-1-18650
Wow, I'm impressed that they got that Z1 open. I had written off this light as unserviceable. I like the light though.
Even if it can be modded, I'd be wary about increasing current much. With the small star and the big lead wire holes under it, there's not much area under it to transfer heat away. At least VoB has Sinkpads now, so that might help.
I think the nanjg105 drivers can be converted to e-switch, although I think it'll also require new firmware. It looks like there's room to triple stack 7135's, so 1A and ~500 lumens should be possible.
I doubt I'll mod though since even with those mods it won't have anodized threads or work with an AA, and it really hurts that I already have a ZL H52. I'll may change my mind if I ever put together an anodizing kit though.
I call this type of light a right angle flashlight because it is similar to the old military flashlights. Unlike those military lights, it's much smaller, brighter, and can be used as a headlight or flashlight.
What about the xtar mc11 clones? 12$ from DX and you could probably find a cheaper version elsewhere…
You can use the original xtar ad401 diffuser on it, if someone finds a cheaper deal please post it I have this on my forever wish list and already purchased the clip on diffuser…
I finally pushed the switch out and see what's happening now. The battery cathode (+) connect to the driver through the contact board, which is easy enough to see. The anode (-) connects through the switch. The switch has contacts on the side that make contact to the body of the light, so it acts like a regular tail cap switch. That should make drive modding very easy. I'm suddenly a big fan of this light again.
The contact board is a little over 16mm and the driver is a little under 15mm.
It might be possible to shave the BLF17DD driver to 16mm. This is a FET driver, so you can go bonkers with the output and fry the emitter in this tiny light in no time. There are plenty of places to attach the negative "tailcap" wire from the switch.
Leaftye I haven’t ordered this light yet but I really like the look, size, and price of the z1. My friend wants this light to wear on his shirt pocket in his line of work he prefers this over a headlamp. My goal would be to push this light to about 500 lumens. Maybe throw in an xml2 or xpg2 on copper
