[Review] Convoy M21H MAO flashlight - Convoy start to go upmarket!

My review of the Convoy M21H 4000 lumens MAO treated Type-C flashlight with a 12 Degree Tir Bead Lens for an excellent beam.

The first Convoy I’ve reviewed that didn’t feel budget!

The mao looks stunning. My main criticism of M21F is moonlight can not ramp up to higher modes. I assume M21H has the same driver?

2 Thanks

Yes it can’t ramp up, I’m guessing it’s to stop pocket activation ramping up.

1 Thank

Being unable to ramp up from moonlight is a deal-breaker for me.

Im testing this one also and really like it. Feels way more expensive than it is. Plus you can swap the TIR for other ones Simon sells they’re 37mm x 18mm with a 10mm bottom opening. The UI is okay but not the best. I think an improvement over the early ramping ui for sure.

2 Thanks

I didn’t mind the UI, just a tad slow at cycling maybe. 10 tap lockout is quite humourous.

1 Thank

Same, my main complaint about my S21E.

And this. I hate it

2 Thanks

Yes it is a lot of clicks. The stepped cycling pauses reminds me of early Acebeam eswitch UIs like in the L17. Takes 2 seconds to switch.

I ordered an M21H a couple weeks ago from Simon and have been having fun with it each night. I’m impressed with the power and tint (5000K XHP70.3 HI R70) as well as the reasonable size for carrying in a jacket pocket. I’m kinda surprised it’s not more popular.

I also ordered 4 different TIR lenses to swap in and out at 3 degrees, 8 degrees, 36 degrees and a 10*30 strip beam. I’m going to make some time to try them out in a couple different situations and locations. Pretty flexible light overall and I’m glad I stumbled upon it.

1 Thank

I guess that means the 5000K is a 3A bin as stated on Simon’s store, not a 3C as his Aliexpress listing still says. Do you happen to have a way of measuring the duv?

Unfortunately I don’t have the ability to measure specs on my flashlights.

I hope to share some impressions of the different TIR lenses sometime soon though.

1 Thank

I’d certainly be interested in seeing some beam shots with the different optics.

1 Thank

I’ll definitely work on it. I’d like to see them side by side myself.

2 Thanks

Dear @PBWilson, I just ordered my 1st M21F and 2nd M21H (both in 5000K XHP70.3 HI R70) + all available TIR optics. Can’t wait to get my shippment. Were you able to finish your TIR comparison? Would be so great to see your side-by-side comparison. Thanks in advance! Cheers Julius

The UI is indeed the deal breaker for me too. It’s only a tool
I take a when I know I need a lot of light for sure. If the UI can be improved, it will be my EDC. I love everything about it apart from the UI.

3 Thanks

I have all the TIR lenses and plan to post beamshots. My light is with 4 x 219b LEDs though, different from yours with XHP70.3.

2 Thanks

Yes thats really annoying with all my convoy lights. They are great, but not being able to switch from moonshine mode to the next brightnext step is such a pain in the ass every time I use them. It would be so easy to adapt their programming to the way our Sofirn and Wurkkos lights work. Is it possible to create a BLF-petition to Simon to improve this “bug”? Maybe he is not aware of this bottle neck which holds off a lot of enthusiasts from buying…

Dear @cannga, you were the inspiration source for me buying this M21F and M21H lights. After some real world testing, the only difference in approach between us seems to be the focus on “most beautiful beam” = your 219b LEDs vs. my desire of “maximum efficiency and sustainable lumens with acceptable nice beam color”.

Therefore I had to take the XHP 70.3 HI, right? What else should I have taken? I ordered a Wurkkos TS26S with 4x519a just to see myself what this @cannga is always enthusing about. And if I would prefer them over the more powerful XHPs. But nope, even the TS22 with XHP 70.3 Hi CRI90 4000K has more useable output, not to mention my more powerful M21H with same LED but 5000K, and my latest favorite the M3-C with XHP 70.3 HI CRI70 5000K.

Whatever, shure I would love to see your TIR comparison to get an idea what the different TIR angles would do. So please, keep on testing and posting :+1:

Thanks for the kind words. The little I know, I’ve learned from people here. Yes it seems like I have an addiction to LEDs with high CRI and good tint such as Nichia 519a, B35AM, and especially 219b 4500k, but all hobbies involve subjective and personal preference, no right or wrong.

I do also absolutely LOVE super-bright 15000 lm plus lights Discussed HERE, and super-throwers such as my Wurkkos with SBT90.2. Just that there are not as many fine points to discuss, and for throwers, for me, there’s not much beyond SBT90.2’s 4800 lm and 1 km throw.

For sure I will be posting beam shots of the TIR’s for M21H. @FunkyRider86 already pointed out something important (the dome protrusion INSIDE the TIR optics) in that discussion. Convoy S21D w/ legendary Nichia 219b. Review & comparison w/ Nichia 519a, E21a, FFL351A Rosy & ultra-high CRI LEDs. I really want M21F and/or M21H but now knowing their inability to ramp up from moonlight, that’s a bummer. That’s an identical UI characteristic of the M3-C.
… Removing them from the cart , sadly …

Yup, I have this UI experience with my CONVOY M3-C, XHP70.3. Everything is really good about it, except for :

  • The inability to ramp up from moonlight,
  • Auto memory,
  • 100% mode (Turbo) is part of the regular cycle and MEMORIZED!

Auto memory : I’m not really sure which mode it will turn ON. I always try to remind myself to turn it OFF in Low mode but that’s a hassle.
1H moonlight, but then can’t ramp up. That’s a hassle.
I’d prefer manual memory, choose the preferred brightness level/mode to be the default. Or default to Low mode.

I’d prefer 100% mode to be accessible ONLY with 2C. Turbo should only be 2C, not part of the regular cycle.

100% mode is MEMORIZED : inadvertently getting Turbo-Blast when using it indoor is NOT pleasant at all.

I really like the M3-C but the UI makes it kinda annoying for regular use.
So I only use it outdoor.
OFF, 2C = Turbo. Turbo, 1C = OFF.
Note : If started in Low/Medium mode, then 2C Turbo, then 1C will not turn it OFF, it goes back to Low/Medium  .

Outdoor. Even then I prefer to use my PD90S or MT35 mini, both with Anduril2, not less bright than M3-C, fun for outdoor.
With Anduril2 they’re also nice to use indoor, no worry about accidental Turbo-Blast, can become a nice lantern with diffuser.

I still like M3-C but I’m not obsessed with M21F or M21H anymore  .
