Review: Sky Ray 3800 3 x XM-L

Good evening guys. I headed out to the park with the intention of doing a full blown long range beam shots, but sadly my Iphone4 cam couldn't keep up. It was useless and I own no other camera (but I'm now in the market!). Those will come soon. This isn't anything official, just my thoughts.

Cons:

  • Leaves some to be desired in the "throw" catagory, but it's not a thrower, sooooo.....

Features / Value: 4/5

The light lived up to all the hype in my book. It's a well made light at a fantastic price and very bright. It includes the disco modes that most of us are against, but we'll just have to live with it for now. I took it out to the park and couldn't capture the beam profile or intensity with my phone camera, but it illuminated everything! I was standing down a fairly narrow walkway with forest on each side and it lit up as far as I could see. The end of the trail was approximately 200 yards away and there was no noticable hotspot or intense illumination. To it's credit, the HS-802 thrower didn't put a spot out that far either. So I was pleased.

Design / Build Quality: 4/5

I've only owned the light for a week and haven't used or abused it aside from tests for this review, and a little of my own amusement out in the parking lot. I am happy with the build quality compared to my TF-1200, as there are a few differences between them. The main battery tube is slightly thicker on the Skyray, and it just generally feels solid throughout. The have been no questionable threads or light flickering or anything of the sort. It was perfect out of the package from MF.

Battery Life: 4/5

The great output described above will obviously come at the price of battery life, but nothing extreme. I found the tailcap measurements to be 2.73A from 2 fresh Hi-Max 3000's and 2.78A from 2 fresh Palight 3000's.

Light Output: 4/5

Light output is awesome, but again, I was hoping it would have a tad more throw. The sheer volume of light kinda makes up for that though, as it puts a smile on my face as it powers up.

Summary: 4/5

Overall, I would give this light a 4/5, it's as good as you'll find for $50 at this time. There are things that could be better, and there are things that also plesantly surprised me for the price. I would recommend this light to anyone here, you really can't go wrong.

Trustfire TR-1200 L SkyRay 3800 R

The hotspot is quite a bit bigger as you can tell. But the intensity is the real story here, the Skyray really pours out the light. It's quite a difference in person, I am very very pleased.

Sorry, it didn't add all my pics???

Man, tough reviewer. From the looks of it, it's a must-have light. Good thing I've got one in the mail. :D

This is no doubt a must have light!I got one and love it!

Nice review ZW99GT, thanks a lot! This light definitely sounds like a winner. I just cleaned up the formatting a little bit and you're now on the frontpage and sticky.

I am looking forward to being able to pull the trigger on this puppy!

I am looking forward to being able to pull the trigger on this puppy!

I said it before that this is a great light. Has to be about the best bargain out there. The only glitch I have is that sometimes it will snap out of low. All of a sudden it will go to full brightness. Not a big deal but that can be a real jolt depending on what you were doing on low mode.

The reason why I didn't order one yet is the heat sinking... It's still the drop-in design, isn't it?

~20W with a drop-in - I'm not convinced.

+1, count me in for the same reason.

You guys haven't been following the developments. So many measurements and real world tests (and its really a lot) have taken place not only here but elsewhere.... This puppy in this regard is even better than many of the high-end branded lights.

+1

+2; lots of good info on this light accross a number of boards. It's well worth actually reading through all the helpful info already provided before jumping to conclusions.. There is a reason this light has been so popular.

This use some kind of drop-in. The difference between this and P60 drop-ins it that this one is screwed to the head so heat transfer is better. P60 drop-ins are floating inside the host without good contact.

Decided to simulate temperate conditions. The thaicpf tests were done in Thailand. Innocent

Temp was around 16 deg C, light breeze of about 5kph. That should be indicative of conditions of what some of you guys experience outdoors, even in dead night of summer.

Time 1 minute, 8 minutes, 19 minutes. 23:13hrs, 23:20, 23:31 as indicated on image EXIF data.

1351 -> 1324. Drop of 2% 19 minutes.

Wow. That's quite surprising... in an extremely good way.

I think that answers any concerns with thermal runaway.

Full bore runs from thaicpf. Last image is 54 minutes (!!) I am posting here as I think thaicpf went down, this was gotten from goggle cache, just in case the nice data gets lost. Pictures credit to brother dong of thaicpf. The diff between this and my test is that this is tropical temperatures kind of acid test, mine is 16 deg with a light breeze (I tested it directly under an air-conditioner airflow) which is more indicative of what you guys would get, probably even better cooling as I think you guys get cooler weather.

Light is regulated anyway, just for info Panasonic NCR18650 2900s were used.

This light have excellent heat sinking. The drop-in is secured to the head and

thus the body of the flashlight. The head gets very hot under use.

Sky Ray 3xT6 is pretty close to 1700 lumens OTF of the SR92.

Check out the animated GIF near the bottom. Check out the spill from the light direct from the emitters and not the reflectors, the lighting on the vertical pillar just beside the hotspot. SR92 and Sky Ray are nearly the same.

And the best thing is, the Sky Ray can operate as a shorty with 2 x 18500, Generic IMRs are only 8 bucks a pair on bestinone.net

I think that the SR92 is gonna throw a lot further.

Spill (or short distance) of the Sky Ray could be brighter
