Sofirn SC13a emitter swap?

I’m wanting to do an emitter swap on my SC13a.
Has anyone successfully done a swap without destroying it?
Any tips?

Take your time on the bezel. And I mean go very very slow!

Thanks @INeedMoreLumens and @worrub918 .

I never taken apart a glued bezel before, but I was thinking of maybe warming it with a hair dryer on high. I’m afraid to use my hot air station because I worry about melting the optic. Then I was thinking I could use a really sharp chisel and try to wedge between the bezel and the host. Give it a few taps with a hammer and see if I can get it to move. Any chance you know what the optic size is in case I destroy that too?

The bezel is not glued

Sorry, I glossed over that part.
I had it stuck in my had it was glued after reading horror stories of people trying to do swaps.

I made a tool to assist getting the bezel off.
I ground down a screwdriver into a chisel shape. Sharpened on 600g. Then hardened it a little with a torch. Quenched in sparkling water, then touched it up with 600g again.

I would still start with a razor blade and get it open as far as you can with it. Then switch to this. The aluminum for the bezel is extremely weak. I had a tiny screwdriver and twisted it a tiny bit and caused the bezel to bend.

Good call. I didn’t realize the bezel was aluminum.

1 Thank

Yeah. And it’s pretty weak aluminum.

Good to know.
I’ll report back this evening and let you know how it comes out.

I got it! No scuffs. Took a while though.
I started with razor blades and my mini hammer.
Once the razor blade was bottoming out on the bezel, I added a second razor, stacking both of them.
Once those bottomed out, I switched to the chisel I made.
Now to decide which emitter to put into it.
I have a few NTG35 and FFL351a, each in different flavors.
I’m leaning FFL351 in 3700k neutral.

Btw, that chisel I made was hair shaving sharp. The edge is all marred up now, but that’s fine.

Awesome job!!!

That’s the same LED I put in mine… LOL!

1 Thank

Thanks!
It’s funny, I was planning on the ffl351, then I read your thread @INeedMoreLumens linked me to and I thought to myself, damn, he is going to think I’m copying him. Lol

2 Thanks

Nah! It’s a good LED. I don’t blame you for wanting to use it.

I decided to knock the dome off this 519a 5000k before going any deeper, and that got me exactly what I needed out of this mod.

Second to that, I have 4 of the ffl351 3700k neutrals, and I think they would be better served in a quad build I’ve been planning.

I forgot to take beam pics before taking it apart, so I took before and after pics of the spill without optic installed.

You can see a little rose in the after.

Here it is all finished up.

Peach and Lime?

That sounds about right.

FYI… you can do the same razor blade method on the bezel of the Olight if you care to swap that emitter. But same thing… be very careful. The aluminum is kinda brittle.
