Looking at getting a Sofirn / Wurkkos but not had one before and trying to find out what they’re like in terms of quality, realibility and runtimes in relation to the manufacturers claims.
Also how they’d compare to a Convoy S2+ which I have, I’d prefer the side button for this use but if it’s nowhere near as good as the Convoy would get another of those instead?
I’ll start by saying that I’m a huge Convoy fan, I currently own about 20 of them and have had at least that many other Convoys pass through my hands.
Sofirn makes Wurrkos so I’m 99% sure the only difference between the SC18 and the WK03 is the machining.
I recently won a SC18 and I was pleasantly surprised with it.
The UI has all the essentials and is easy to figure out.
It looks better in person than it does in photos.
USB-C charging.
Sturdy build and quality machining.
I’m not a huge fan of reflectors, so the TIR was icing on the cake!
I’ve read posts that due to the lack of regulation the SC18 doesn’t perform so well when the battery is getting low.
I’m never concerned about run times because I have plenty of other batteries/lights if the one I’m using fails me.
I about 2 weeks ago I gifted my SC18 to my mom’s friend, a truck driver in his late 60s and he loves it.
However, for an enthusiast I would recommend the Sofirn SC31 Pro over the SC18 and WK03.
Anduril2
It can use the S2+ TIR lenses, so you get more beam options.
Color options(Black, Red, Green, Blue, Purple)
Nicer button
Did I mention Anduril2?
I currently own 4 SC31 Pro and have plans to modify them sometime in 2024.
They are all excellent enthusiast-oriented brands, and it comes down to personal preference. For side switch and latest anduril options, and for high-lumen hotrods, Sofirn seems to be the way to go from what I’ve read. However, I’m personally much more a Convoy fan because their selection of emitters/drivers is so comprehensive, and everything is super modular. You can essentially pick the emitter, driver, reflector/optic, and host independently to make your dream light. Also extremely easy to fix/upgrade.
Cheers for the replies, just wanted to make sure I wasn’t buying something that wasn’t great but seems like they’re a good budget option and definitely worth a try … especially as the side button and their size appeal.
I’ll take a look at the SC32 as well, may be one to add to the growing collection in the near future
As has been said, the SC18 and WK03 are basically the same light. I had the SC18 before gifting it (a theme here?). It can be had for $15 or even $10 which is a great value.
The lack of regulation isn’t noticeable unless you use it for a long period of time. It’s easy to keep topped-off with USB C charging. I didn’t like how easy the button was to accidentally press but it has a good UI lockout and can be mechanically locked out as well, IIRC.
It’s unibody design (guessing the Wurkkos is too) so it won’t take a short 18350 tube. It is already a compact light, though. (I love the S2+ but it’s too long with the 18650 tube).
Cheers for that and edited the reply as well … some forums let you edit the replies but not the original title so didn’t realise you could
Guess this all depends what you want it for and if size or runtime is more important, for my purpose the runtime’s the overriding factor for this torche’s purpose.
Funnily enough I initially ordered the S2 not the + … I then ordered a couple of torches for friends and when I was doing it ordered the short tube for mine not realising they didn’t fit the S2’s .. only the S2+'s and it’s sitting here in a draw unused along with 2 batteries.
I’m also going to order the Sofirn SC21 which is the smaller size for taking on holidays as I like the idea of being aloe to charge it with the same lead as a phone and not have to take a charger / spare batteries away with me.
My wording wasn’t great … it’s a balance between size and runtime … a 16340 / 18350 is probably not enough whereas a 18650 is probably the happy medium without being too big.
That said if I found the right thing I may consider another for cycling but the runtimes of the Sc18 are better than the SP3 for low and medium settings … albeit it at slightly lower brightness.
These caught my eye the other day but one of the 1st reviews I looked at really wan’t great so I kind of got put off of them … most of the listings don’t give runtimes either but maybe I’ll do some more research on them.
Simon(Convoy) has so many options(drivers/LEDs) to list run times would be nearly impossible.
Also I apologize for trying to add more lights to the list, the SC18 will probably be great for your use case.
Be sure to check the “SuperDeals” section on AliExpress. Often Sofirn, Wurrkos and Cutesliving list the SC18 and WK03 at amazing prices. I’ve seen the SC18 below $10 with a battery before.
The unregulated, low efficiency driver is a deal breaker for me. I bought 3 of them, all gifted to muggles. Emitter I can swap, but the driver is non-removable. It just gets dimmer and dimmer until you suspect that your eyes are having issues. Build quality is okay. The rubber button and USB cover are a bit finicky and doesn’t seem very wear resistant.
S2+, although bulky and primitive, does its primary job well, which is providing regulated output for a good amount of time. In the end I got rid of all my SC18s and kept my bunch of S2+.
You might like the small form factor and well thought after UI, but the excitement wears off after a while and the output is just unsatisfactory to say at best.
The SC18 and WK03 are solid, and very good value for the money.
Oddly, contrary to past norm, it’s the Wurkkos version that has the more traditional styling, with the typical diamond knurling, while the Sofirn got the ribbed knurling.
The side switch is at more risk of being accidentally triggered, and it has the typical unregulated S/W driver performance, but again, given the price, one could do much worse.
That said, nobody has mentioned the beam yet, and the reason the ones I’ve handled have been passed onto others.
For a small, at-hand light like that, I found the hot spot too small for my general usage, and not as well rounded as I’d have liked. In this respect, the FC11 and SC31 better fit my desires.
I can’t compare them against the S2+, because of its many emitter and optics choices, and the fact that I’m a flashlight weirdo who doesn’t like tail switches, and has yet to buy a Convoy.
But I do have an SP35, which is a bump up in size, and while its beam is also biased a bit toward throw, it has more usable spill than I thought the SC18 did. Too bad that it’s one of the few S/W lights to have a good, regulated driver.
The SC18 is as big as I want to go in a pocket light and still get 18650. I had to protect the switch though. I personally like the cooler temp even though I prefer 5000k usually because it gives it a little more lumens while keeping the heat down.
