The 12th Annual Old Lumens Challenge - 2024 - Winners announced!

I have a concept (and it’s a fun one) but I’m not really sure what to chose in terms of emitter, driver, optic to really make the project ahem shine. Is troubleshooting that and figuring it out on my own part of the challenge, or am I cool to seek guidance in my project thread, or elsewhere?

2 Thanks

I think you can text the organizers (you could last year), ask here or make your build thread and see if people reply to it. Usually there is a good bit of interest

2 Thanks

Feel free to ask for any advice and guidance you need, in your build thread or elsewhere.

The prize pool is Olympic sized this year.

Huge thanks to our generous sponsors:

Wow!

I have taken the first step. A thread has been started.

This is MtnDon’s Hand Made category entry in the 12th Annual Old Lumens Challenge.

8 Thanks

I plan on entering but I’m still deciding what to do. I’d like to make a handmade light but I’ve never done that before and I need to be realistic about how much time it could take. Anyway, a big thanks to everyone involved in organizing the contest and all the participants keeping it interesting!

I will be entering the challenge under modified flashlight category. I have created a build thread although I haven’t began anything yet, still figuring out how to go about it and waiting on parts to arrive.

Heres the link to it. Hunter-Jackson's entry for the 12th Old lumens challenge. Modified flashlight category

Forgot to post mine here. Here is the link to my entry into the 12th Old Lumens challenge:

I’ve got a lot of ideas on how to make it work. Just need to start trying them.

Here is my entry for this challenge.

Looks like we got a competition within the competition by modifying two absolute iconic lights in in seemingly similar ways (Maglite vs. Ledlenser)

4 Thanks

It should be a good competition. My hope is that seeing each others progress will push us to make them even better than we originally planned. Either way, it’s gonna be fun!

2 Thanks

heres my entry - best of luck to everyone

Wow, I somehow missed the announcement about the challenge…

I’d like to enter in the Modified category but I’m still not sure what to build just yet. I may also think about switching over to the Machine Made category if I have enough time.

Edit: forgot to update with the link to my build thread

2 Thanks

I have created a build thread.

Here’s my thread for the hand made category:

NeutralFan’s 12th Annual BLF Old Lumens Challenge - Hand Made

I have some pretty tough competition, but regardless of how I fair, I’m already having fun with my build.

And thank you to the sponsors for the wonderful prizes!!!

hey, in the handmade section, can i purchase a second hand sheet metal/plastic box to use as a housing?

Yes.

PHEWWW, I was eyeing up a washing machine down the road from me left on the sidewalk for scrap sheet metal. My plan was to field strip it and then bend and screw it together to make a box. I’ll rather purchase something

Here is my entry for the modified category and my first ever entry to this contest!

The lineup this year is looking extremely impressive, but I hope my build still adds something that someone eventually finds interesting/helpful. Excited to see everyone’s builds to completion!
