I don't know much about the packages and how these LED's are mounted. Which XM-L is the right one to get in order to do this modification? How hard is it to install. I am pretty handy but have limited tools/parts related to flashlights. I only have 8 flashlights, so I am somewhat of an under-achiever around here.
You'll need one of this: http://www.led-tech.de/en/High-Power-LEDs-Cree/CREE-XM-Serie/CREE-XM-L-U2-on-Copper-PCB-LT-1790_120_170.html + http://kaidomain.com/product/details.S020073 + a lathe or a 18650 dummy
Driver chanche to a 7135 based 1 x 18650 version is a little bit tricky, because orig. driver must be killed and used as base for new one.
Right focus/centering is also a little bit tricky, reflector opening must be enlarged and a spacer(under LED-base) must be used for optimal fucus.
funny things with X7, a extended version of a X7 and a shortened.
Yikes - How many did you buy?
Now i have modded 3 Pcs. ;)
But i have only one. ;)
....when someone use 3 x X7 in a flashlight kind of TK45, output will be 258 KLux !
At 5m the hotspots not complete together, but at ~10m it´s one hotspot. ;)
For the first 2 modded X7´s i use a 13mm hole in Reflector, but at the third mod 13mm was too less (ring in beam).
At this i enlarged the hole to 15mm, then it was good.
Beam without ring and 88KLux (better than mine, damn :D )
That is some serious results Andi.
Do you think it is because the led sits more inside the reflector? (dont know how to say it - hope you know what I mean?)
Focus should be the same, my thought it was, that LED´s maybe have little bit different beam angels.
Maybe some XML with 123° and the other 128°.....don´t really know. ;)
I did this mod too. But for me the XML didn'tthrow and focus as good as just simply de-domeing the SST-50.
I finally got home and got my X7.
This is just my initial thoughts as I reflect on the first test and use of the thing - more to come I think :-)
Pretty happy with it stock actually. Except 1 MEGA flaw! See below.
Seems like my driver is quite up to the task of supplying the SSR-50.
Current draw with 2 batteries is 2,75 slowly rising to 3,00 amps
With 3 batteries it is 2,00 amps and rock steady as far as I can tell.
I have not gotten the lux meter I ordered yet. So I cannot say anything about that.
There is one MEGA flaw though:
When I remove the extension tube there is NO ROOM FOR 2 BATTERIES! WTF?
Theres room for 1 18650 and one 18500 or even 2 18500 but NOT 2 18650 unless I unscrew the head and tailcap a few turns.
Dammit!
So I use it with a battery dummie loaded in first and then with 2 batteries. Gives it perfect balance although I think I like the shorter version better.
Build quality:
Heat sink: Best heatsinked light I have for sure. This is massive stuff really. To get this thing to overheat you need to overdrive a sst-90 or something.
Have run it for 30 minutes straight and just got lukewarm.
Ano: Best I've seen on any budget light. Thick and even with little to no color variation on my sample.
Ref: 2 small imperfections in the chrome - I am not 100% happy with this but in my opinion it has almost no impact on throw/lux and it does not show in the beam profile.
EDIT: Typos
Clicky: Good one. Feels good. Solid tailcap and good fit between the clicky and the rubber cap. Nice.
Threads: Square and quite smooth. Came lubed with some lube or other.
O-rings: Double o-rings. The delivered ones are a little too small.
Note on the driver. If run with 1 battery it still pulls 1 A and the light works fine. funny electronic that one.
Note on the Body. You can separate the head and the body and use it in candle mode!
Hi again Andi
I just wonder.
You say in one of the post that you can use original driver for 2 18650 and a XML.
But will that not fry the XML since it gets something like 5 A ??
I just tried it just for kicks.
IT ROCKS! :-)
Although im not sure if 5 amps to the xml is advisable a 10 minute run did nothing to it. No ill effects what so ever!
Thank you Andi. It really seems like I made the right, educated choice for a thrower!
Lots of love for you and your friends Fritz15 and Xandre in saving me lots of money AND optimizing the already awesome light! I am now very close to having the "perfect" thrower I wanted :-)
And now some thoughts - Do you think it would help get higher lux numbers if the XML was put more inside the reflector. It looks like it is sitting a bit low.
Maybe somekind of lifting it up with a copper plate under it?
And I was thinking that maybe if I grind a little bit off the flat aluminium backside of the reflector then it can come even more inside reflector. More light going into the main beam?
If you are using the original lens maybe the focus is ok. ;)
If the LED is too far away from the reflector you should have rings in beam, that´s the reason, why i enlarged the reflector hole.
Too close in the reflector costs more lux. ;)
Also i use some o-rings between the LED-protector and the reflector to made it solid.
Ok. I have a little bit of rings in the beam. Mostly on the far outside. And the area around the hotspot I have some little "Lines". Not complete rings. Does this make sense to you? So maybe enlarge hole a little more to get them away.
I still use original lens because have not had chance to grind the one i order from flashlightlens yet.
BTW: I just used the light 10 minutes ago. And for fun I shine it on a tree 400 meters away. I can easily see even details! COOL!
I mean yes, with enlarged hole, the "ring" should be away. ;)
And maybe little bit more Lux.
If possible test to position the reflector with more distance to LED (2-3 O-Rings between LED-Protector and Reflector).
Maybe with orig. Lens it´s not really possible to position the LED far away enough from the reflector. ;)
But it could also be, that your LED is different to mine. ;)
Can you measure lux?
I can not measure Lux - yet. Awaiting another yellow package!
I will try to open hole some more and try to move reflector away from led.
You have already enlarged the hole ?
then maybe, all is ok. ;)
Yes I have, but not 13 mm or 15 mm. I hope I have time tonight :-)
May I ask where to buy the 11x7135 driver? Is it available in Kaidomain?
I would assume that you would need to add 3 additional 7135 chips to a 8x7135 driver.
