Us Dinosaurs are Roaring Back!

Mom always told me if you wait long enough it all comes back around. She was speaking of fashion of clothes and jewelry but it really applies to much more,
Case in Point, Vinyl records, Old School Cameras and now this;

Fav section from this;

“Wired headphones join a list of seemingly obsolete technologies that have roared back in recent years, just we tumble into the next digital era. People young and old are adopting retro products such as DVDs, cassettes, ancient tube TVs and even typewriters. At a recent concert, I saw a guy in the audience recording the show not with a phone, but a 16mm film camera from the 1970s.”

And;
“But maybe plug-in headphones feel as close to analogue as we can get.”

Damn straight I still have multiple sets of quality wired headphones and Dark Side of the Moon still sounds best on real headphones

You are not wrong, I have a TikTok dedicated to radio stations I find, mainly shortwave radio, I do a bit of Airband live streams from YSSY Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport. I have met heaps of radio people, even in the younger generations that are just starting out.

Lol, couple of days ago my daughter asked to buy her a wired headphones.
I don’t think it’s a coincidance. Maybe this “wire superiority” is currently being promoted on social media.

“Old school” cameras. I mean, a Canon AE-1 came out in the 70s. That’s only like 20 years ago, right?

5 Thanks

Interesting. I have been into headphones for something over 35 years. Always wired. When they got rid of headphone jacks on cell phones, I started trying bluetooth headphones.

They have made some decent advances in BT headphones over the years. The latest versions with LDAC and AptX can be pretty good. And they are convenient… being able to let a phone sit in one place and not be tied to it with a wire is convenient. That is, until they die when the battery goes dead. Also putting a battery into the things makes them more bulky and heavier. Then you wait until you can recharge them… Noise cancelling features are real nice in some situations too.

But I bought a couple of sets of Hidisz IEMs (In ear monitors) recently. I got a set of their MK10 and MP145 IEMs. I have been listening to them over the last couple of weeks. Honestly there is no way any of the BT stuff comes even close to the sound quality of these. .

It is such a shame that they eliminated the headphone jack on all new phones…

GO Dinosaurs! :+1:

Wow. so with my Canon S50 and my Nikon E8400 camera’s, plus my Pioneer SE-305 headphones I am a very “hip” person.
I won’t mention I still have (but not use) an analogue Nikon F2 (gnarr, gnarr).
If my memory serves me right, my brother even owns a Nikon 35mm rangefinder camera.

3 Thanks

I also have a rangefinder Leica M3 from the 1950s. And occasionally use my Cannon AE1. A very early SLR with rudimentary electronics. Such a shame it has become difficult to find film and also to find anyone to develop and print the pictures. My old black and white lab setup is long gone.

1 Thank

Drooool ! When we still had a parental house we had two Durst setups, B&W and color.
I’m afraid the eldest of my younger brothers has them in “safe storage”. Maybe you know the type:
cherry-picking visit when the corpse is still warm and yet insisting on 1/x part of (the rest of) the inheritance.

2 Thanks

Film is still very much alive and well, though quite expensive. I gotta pick up a couple developed rolls the next time my place opens. Check the datestamp.

**PSA TLDR, many bipedaled terrestrially based dinosaurs most likely did not roar…they most likely quacked, clucked, gobbled, or honked. A bunch of the larger ones probably spent alot of time basking in swamps, as even with an elevated oxygen level, their sheer mass would have been difficult to power/sustain without some level of buoyancy.

Have you ever seen an orca skeleton? Looks similar to a plesiosaur skeleton.

What about a giraffe skeleton? I wonder, if animators had no idea what a giraffe was and were told that the skeleton belonged to a reptilian land based dinosaur, what would they draw?

I would also chuckle if some dinosaurs were actually a prehistoric python species that died with some other undigested animal in its belly, then the body rotted so the stomach contents poked through and rotted as well, giving the illusion that it’s all one skeleton after fossilization…

TLDR*

*back on topic: as others have mentioned, resurgence of older technologies stems from “newfound” interests based on sharing nostalgic acquisitions, novel-to-individual hype, so on so forth. Remember when polaroids phased out, so they shrunk the film and marketed it as immediate snapshots for social outtings? Being social creatures, we are typically swayed or align to a certain crowd, such as BLF, for example. Most of us are also extremely fickle in terms of taste.

While many “yes men” influencers are ruining flashlight innovation by doping the public with gimmicky clickbait, it helps to generate interest in the hobby. There are honest reviewers who cater specifically to actual users, and I actually find my lighting needs regressing to “dinosaur” tech…direct drive, mechanical twist operation, etc…the highest tech lights I use are both Emisars, because Anduril 2 allows the flexibility of smart and dumb operation.

Caveman need light now! Caveman also need sustained beacon or SOS so hand no get tired and do other thing. Caveman like shiny thing. Caveman like colors. Caveman need High CRI.

I use Bluetooth headphones with aptX Low Latency technology (to watch video and play video games) because, in my opinion, they’re more convenient than wired headphones.
That said, I do have some nice wired headphones, and because the internal batteries eventually die (in Bluetooth headphones), I could save a lot of money by switching to wired headphones. :headphone:

1 Thank

Yeah, my smartphone doesn’t have a headphone jack, but it does have a USB-C port that can accept a USB-C to 3.5mm jack adapter. :slightly_smiling_face:

2 Thanks

I have a strong preference for wired headphones. I’ve been using a set of Tinaudio T2s for years. I’ve replaced the cable, and gone through quite a few sets of tips, but they keep working and they sound pretty good for something that was about $30 on Aliexpress.

My smartphone does have a headphone jack, and I am disinclined to “upgrade” to a newer model that does not. I doubt it would do anything I care about better.

1 Thank

Sure, but it is just another “thing” to carry that gets in the way and uses battery from the phone for its iDAC… The smallest ones do not produce very good audio… I have tried a few…

1 Thank

I’ve seen some usbc direct airpods

CD’s here too. FiiO and others producing portable players of excellent quality. I’ve been visiting the charity (thrift) shops and cherry picking racks of discs.

I really dislike having music stored on or streamed from my phone or iPad. It’s a huge faff choosing, locating, connecting BT, only to find out my 3 months free sub has expired. Even the permanent iTunes purchases aren’t easy to navigate.

Rooting through a shelf of CDs or vinyls, pulling out a few Talking Heads or Pink Floyd albums, deciding which to play, quick read and admire of the iconic cover. I mean, what good is Joe’s Garage on MP3 when you should be sat with the gatefold open in your lap and your wired headphones clamped over your ears reading the story?

2 Thanks

I agree. But I have made concessions. All of my hundreds of CDs has been ripped using FLAC to my Plex music server. organized and displayed logically with Plexamp so I can play from phones, tablets or PC. Available from any internet connection.

I also agree about BT. The big reason I lament them removing the innocent little analog headphone jack from new phones.

Yes, but there is no analog audio from USB. So they need a DAC and amp and use phone power.

1 Thank

These are the ones that I have…
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BK86C7TN
They work quite well. :musical_note:
I’d rather have a dedicated 3.5mm port, but you can’t always get what you want. laugh

1 Thank

If only I wasn’t an audio snob of sorts. These inexpensive DACs will not even play a significant part of my collection They can’t do Hi Res music files… 24/96+ and DSX files.

But the old dinosaur wired units were never the limitation in this regard…Oh Well it is what it is. But the closest I can come for what I need is in the $200+ range and is a separate box and cables to carry…

Glad to read the the Dinosaurs are roaring back….maybe someone will listen and make a modern phone with an analog headphone jack…

But if only I could get what I need…:japanese_ogre:
