Vector POB Gets Upgraded LiFePO4 Battery

Hi folks,

With all the recent upsurge in interest with this light lately, I’ve taken a second look at mine, in addition to my other handheld spot lights that typically use heavy 7ah-20ah lead acid batteries. All of them pictured below were heavily used some weeks back due to Hurricane Sandy and the blizzard we had here. Some of the lead acid batteries didn’t hold up due to age and finally gave out with such heavy demand put on them.

With my supply of lead acid batteries having dwindled, and having put off purchasing LiFePO4 batteries due to cost, after 3 years of procastinating, I decided to finally spend the money for one battery as a test, and I’m sure glad I did, and purchased from BatteryStuff.com linked below.

The best choice for me at this time was to start with the Shorai LFX142-BS12 14Ah battery in Shorai’s Case #2, small format, as seen in the photo below. 14ah is the highest capacity for this size casing.


Weighing in at a mere 1.60 lbs, my POB feels as if no battery is inside it and makes it a dream to carry around
now rather than lugging around 10 lbs of its former weight.

The battery ships with a huge amount of padding, which not only protects the battery during shipping
but also serves to take up space in whatever application it’ll be used in so it doesn’t slide around in the
battery compartment. Obviously neccessary due to this type of battery being much smaller than what
it replaces, but much higher power. The padding is high end, can be cut to any size with scissors, and also
has a self-adhesive backing should you feel you need to stick the pads onto a surface.


Charging the battery can take place in several ways. If used in a motorcycle, the charging system
will work fine. In my case, I tried using the on-board charger for the POB, which is enough to bring
the battery to about 92% of full charge or about 13.25v, and naturally can’t balance charge the battery.

So I opted for the Shorai charger with automatic balance charge. Just plug it into the
charge/balance port and press the charge button and that’s it. When complete, it’ll charge the battery
to 14.3v and an audible beep will be heard for a few seconds.

It’ll remain fully charged for a very long time unless it’s connected to something with
parasitic drain. So there is no need to maintain this battery, charge it and basically it stays that
way ready to go. I’ve gotten so tired of constaintly having to keep my lead acid batteries on my solar and
Battery Minder chargers all the time to maintain them properly, I suspect this will be the start of something
great.

*_BTW, automotive chargers such as BatteryMinders and the like, must not be used with this type
of battery due to the automatic desulphating systems they have and will damage the battery.

With the new battery installed without any foam padding, it sort of gets swallowed up in the POB.
However, it was necessary for me to add several inches of the padding forward of the battery to
get some leverage and move the battery back towards the access panel. Without doing this, the
POB became very front heavy and simply falls forward onto itself. So that fixed that easily enough.


Without doing any full run tests yet, my 9Ah lead acid battery usually gave me about 90-105 minutes
runtime. With this one, I’ll be well beyond that figure. What’s more, this LiFePO4 loves high current
draw. It just sits at 13 volts and won’t budge. Even my lead acid batteries fully charged to 13.1 volts,
would immediately sag to 12.2 volts and slowly start to drop even further from there.


If I come up with any additional useful information, I’ll be sure to post about it.

That’s quite an investment, but I think, a wise one.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but a 7AH SLA should only be drained 50% at most, so it is actually 3.5Ah, while you’re new battery is a true 14Ah? 3x the capacity, lightweight, very little maintenance, and much longer life.

Yep, you have it right. But in all fairness, the POB requires a lot of power for initial startup before it settles down to running on about 3.2a-3.5a. I’m more thrilled about it being 1/5 the weight of a lead acid. Eventually I’m going to try it out in the other lights shown in the photos. Those should run for many hours on that battery. Glad you liked my little collection of hand-helds :wink:

You just had to show me this now didn’t ya. Makes me want to convert both mine now. But I’m gonna keep mine the same for now since I bought a Firefoxes FF3. But eventually I would like to do this. Can you tell me how you conncected the wires to the battery posts? Just curious if you just took the wire pigtails off of each and directly connected each wire around the screw on each post.

Oh and I weighed my other POB clone light and got 8lbs 9oz on my Rapala digital scale which is very accurate.

my question is… can i just unplug the old battery and then replace it with this new battery and charge it like the old way?

All this is your fault. If you hadn’t gotten the itch to get a POB, I’d have a lot of money still in my pocket, but some non-working lights too…LOL.

As for the wiring, since this POB will never see a lead acid battery again, I removed the stock F1 connectors and replaced them both with gold plated connectors. I’m not sure were I got them from, perhaps Radio Shack. But I’m sure they are not hard to find, nor necessary. I simply had them and figured they’d be good for all the amps this light requires.

If the battery in your light is a standard shaped 7ah-9ah, this battery will fit no problem. As for connectors, I simply cut the old ones off and replaced them with something that works with the screw-type connects on the Shorai.

Yes it is. But I’ve also wasted a lot of money on these Chinese lipo batteries from Ebay (yeah, my first mistake) hoping they were good. These are just the ones I haven’t disposed of yet. They easily powered the smaller lights because I changed them all over to LED lamps, but they didn’t last long and quickly crapped out. Also, this Shorai will be used at one time or another in most of the lights you see on the table in the photos, so I’ll really get a good chance to put this battery through its paces.

Anyway, everyone should stay away from the batteries you see in the photo below that are sold on Ebay. Total crap!

Those are a halfa battery. That’s the kind of battery that you go in with a friend to purchase and you each get to use it halfa the time. LOL! $150 smackers for a battery. WoW! Ouch!

Yes, but this one has a 3 year warranty, the first 6 months is full replacement. But that’s why it took me 3 years to finally spring for one, they are very costly, but your getting the real thing and nearly no weight. They say it’s possible to get something like 8+ years out of it, but who knows. I’ll take it just for the weight savings.

DayLighter, one last thing. The POB has an external power adapter, no doubt similar to what you use to charge the handheld you are referring to. But the internal circuitry on the POB is what actually handles all the charging. Initially it goes into a full charge mode, once the battery is up to the proper voltage, the POB then switches to float mode. So the highest voltage I’ve seen go into it was 13.78 volts then float charges and holds the battery at 13.24 volts as long as it’s plugged in. Either of these voltages is fine for the Shorai battery. But optimal charging and the more important occasional balance charge will keep it in top form.

If you purchase the shorai, and use your lights exisiting charger, just check the voltage and when it’s fully charged, as high as your charger will allow, up to 14.4 volts is acceptable, just remove it from the charger and your good.

cool… thanks for the info… nice to know there’s other option for it, but the original battery only cost $16 compare to the new one cost $150… ouch.( although it is lighter :slight_smile: )
but since i bought TK75, TN30 and TN31…I hardly find myself the need lugging that heavy light around,
maybe it’ll be useful again someday…when some kid got lost in the woods then i’ll use it for search and rescue :wink:

If your using your hand held HID’s a lot, I can’t stress enough how important it is to install a Stinger volt meter or something similar on them as I’ve done. As I’ve mentioned before, these lead acid batteries are very stressed in a POB. I can’t tell you how many times the light was shining bright, only to find the battery voltage had suddenly dropped to 8 volts, which is the worst thing you can do to a lead acid battery. I wasn’t aware the igniters could even operate at such a low voltage.

My point is this, if you have a POB, or even one of the larger halogens you’ve modified into an HID, one of the best things you can do is install a digital volt meter so you can monitor the condition of the battery at a glance to avoid damaging your batteries.

If you’re like me, and looking to upgrade the ballast to 55 watts to overdrive the 35 watt lamp to push these lights past the 4000 lumen mark, this becomes even more critical. A 55w ballast operates at well past 4 amps and a 7Ah lead acid isn’t going to cut it.

Firstly, WOW!! $148 bucks for just a battery is so painful! This is not including the Shorai balance charge yet I guess!! :open_mouth:

Secondly, from what I understand, those LiFePo4 need very balance charging otherwise bad thing would happened on the batteries. So, buying the balance charger seems like a necessary thing, right?

Correct, the charger was extra. According to Shorai, you can use the charging system on a vehicle or a standard battery charger as long as the charger does not have an automatic desulfation mode. For futher information on these batteries, here is the link to Shorai’s FAQ below. There was someone on Ebay selling A123 batteries with about 7Ah rating or less and was getting maybe $600.00 for them which was a complete ripoff. So I consider the cost of this battery a good buy for what it is.

Nice mod Rich and sounds like it is perfect for you. You have an assortment of interesting lights in your collection.

About those Chinese lithium cell you mentioned, yes the quality may not be very good, but I think another reason of being not powerful enough is probably because they are not designed for high current output. In some websites they do specify the maximum current drawn from these lithium batteries is around 1.5A, which is way too less to power up a HID.

Maybe these batteries are designed for toys, RC… whatever it is.
