What are your favorite Horror/Thriller Movies?

Which horror or thriller movies do you like to revisit in October? Or, alternatively, which horror movies made the most lasting impression on you?

In no particular order, here are some of mine:

  • The Babadook (big impression, very unsettling when I first watched it.)
  • Creepshow
  • The Night Flier (creeped me out as a kid, heard planes fly over all the time at night while doing farm chores)
  • 1408
  • Bone Tomahawk
  • Crimson Peak (gothic eye-candy, not really scary)
  • The Wolfman
  • Invasion of the Body Snatchers 1978
  • Train to Busan
  • The Wolfman
  • Trick ’r Treat
  • Overlord (action with horror elements)

I do love the old classics, just for the entertainment value.
Nosferatu, Frankenstein, Dracula, Mummy Etc.
Many Vincent Price movies. And the Hammer films.

The more modern “Chainsaw” movies. Several of them.

The comedy/horror Evil Dead trilogy best one Army of Darkness.
Can’t quite remember the trailer.
“Lost in Time
”Surrounded by Evil and Low on gas
“Ash, from housewares Vs. The Army of Darkness

Never cared for and got sick from trying - The SAW movies.
The first Hellraiser

Thrillers, Some of Hitchcock’s still hold on well in the modern age. Scree, Scree, Scree…

Terence Young’s Wait until Dark - Everyone jumps in their seats the first time the guy leaps across the screen.

Seven, 13 monkeys, Jaws, Girl with the Dragon tattoo, Silence of the Lambs. The Fugitive.
Edward Scissor Hands. Predator, Alien…

Sure there are many I forgot.
All the Best,
Jeff

@jeff51

Good list! I really should get around to watching those classics you mentioned at the beginning. I just haven’t gotten around to it.

How did you like the Evil Dead reboot? It’s basically it’s own movie because they more or less played it straight and didn’t make it overtly campy. I have all three of the original trilogy in my collection.

I haven’t seen any Saw, Chainsaw, or Hellraiser movies. My impression is that they all use gore to shock the audience and so I expected them to be gross but not really scary. Is that not the case?

You inadvertantly reminded me I still haven’t seen Psycho. I need to do that this month!

Not familiar with Wait Until Dark. I’ll have to check it out.

Good list there with 13 monkeys etc. I guess Alien really is a horror movie but for some reason I don’t really think of it that way.

Didn’t know about the Evil Dead reboot. I’ll have to find it.

The first Texas Chainsaw movie was, for it’s time, a real spook-er.
One or two of the later ones were part camp - part gore.

“The Thing” (first one) scared the dickens out of me when I was a kid.
Liked the second one too.

Not sure if the first Jurassic Park fits in here - still a great one.

And most all of the old Godzilla, Mothra flicks - so corny - just love the baby army tank stop motion.
Never did understand the tiny girls singing the “Mothra” song.

Horror: 28 Days Later.
Thriller: Se7en.
Classic: King Kong (1933).
Impression: The Wicker Man (1973).
Revisit: The Nightmare Before Christmas.
October: THE War of the Worlds.

Oh yeah,
A few of the Freddy and Jason (and the last? Jason episode comes out on Halloween) movies are good ones.
All the Best,
Jeff

@jeff51 I thought the Evil Dead remake was pretty good in its own way. I did see it in a theater though so the experience is a little different. Did you watch it yet?

I will probably try watching the first movies of those bigger series you mentioned like Saw, Texas Chainsaw Massacre etc. If nothing else, I’ll come away with a better understanding of pop culture references!

The Thing 1982 is a great movie! Unfortunately I saw it for the first time when I was too old and it wasn’t very creepy for me. I did love the practical effects used and the sci-fi story.

Deadstream

I like comedy and horror, and Deadstream is scary and hilarious. All my other faves have been mentioned already, I think.

Alien
The Thing
History Of The Ice Capades
