That gun is way under-powered. You need to upgrade ASAP. The caliber all depends on your needs. If you're in bear country, etc...9mm in a decent defensive cartridge would be ideal.
The keltec pmr30 holds 30 rounds of 22 win mag. It would be a decent defensive pistol, however it may not be 100 percent reliable.
Even still for bear, bring an ak in x39, or something..
My answer would be nothing smaller than a 9mm .
