istie: it is not a very large handle (pinky almost at the end) with no guard, so very unsuitable for stabbing (never have any intentions, so this is good ). Having said that, the hold is comfortable for the other things; in my case peeling an apple or buttering my bread, but I can imagine you can also very well skin your deer with it (the knife came razor-sharp as well!). The blade near the sharp edge is very thin (never had a knife this thin in fact, just the the spine of the blade gives firmness to it), which is nice for thin slicing, but I guess the knife is not very forgiving when mis-used.
Vectrex: sorry that this is all new to me, but I am intruigued: do I understand well that this is a chinese design copied by Böker, or is ir that SRM is making these knives for Böker, and produces them for their own brand as well?
It was opened by customs, but allowed through, woohoo!
This is a really nicely made solid knife. Excellent fit and finish, nice and sharp and really strong. I showed it to a mate and now he wants one too. It is going to live in the car, and will go camping with me a a general dogsbody knock around knife. I wish it had a can opener instead of the screwdriver though.
SRM produces for the Asian market and Böker relabels and sells it in western markets, so they are both original Sanrenmu's. It's a bit weird that the Chinese are not guilty of counter-fitting for once, isn't it?
For non-hard times, I would highly recommend the swiss-made and NSF approved Victorinox 41529 Santoku. You can find it for as low as $20 on ebay, no excuse!
Surprised at the G711 not having any gimping, and I see Ganzo still likes to keep things heavy by not drilling out their liners. Price is a bit high too =/
thats the knife that got me off my assisted open kick. black handle, non coated blade. edc for over 2 years now i think, and never touched it with the stone yet
The cheapest Vic I can find is ~$39 with shipping.
Regarding the G711 I’ve just noticed that there are holes drilled in the liner for left hand carry clip position. Unfortunately they didn’t drill the G10 slab…
Still like my assisted knife(Kershaw RJ II), but it feels quite a bit heavier than the Skyline. But don’t have a deep carry pocket clip for the Skyline so it’s staying home till I can make one that doesn’t break off.
Prices must have gone up since I bought mine, YMMV I guess. I think they may be discontinued, I used to see them locally but now they are increasingly difficult to find
Regarding the G711- as long as the holes are in the metal, you could use a dremel or drill for the G10 - not that you should, at this price It would be expected that they would do such a simple thing from the factory. I’m more concerned about the liners not being drilled to save weight, like what Enlan does with their EL-01.
True, it’s not that big a deal and it’s nice that at least the option is there for the future in case someone really wants it.
Would have been far more annoying if the lanyard holes were covered by G10
Thanks for the link, read it all. I'm still not into knives, but I always like to read about what's going on. Especially interesting is what is happening in China these days.
