The Sunwayman R10R and R10A came in today

The build quality on these lights are both excellent. AR coated lenses. Anodized, thick, square threads. Decent heft to them (thick metal, no plastic). Nice forward clicky switches. The emitter on the R10R is a little off center, but I generally dont care about things like this. At the proximities I will be using this light, it is a non issue. The R10R is shorter than my Fenix PD22 G2, which is nice, but the clip is half way down the light, so it sticks out of my pocket.

They could definitely be brighter, but burn time should be decent because they max out at 205 lumens.

An Eneloop AA fits with no problems in the R10A, but it is limited to 140 lumens. I am waiting on the arrival of some protected Sanyo UR14500P cells (1 Zebralight and 2 Intl-Outdoor), however, I don’t think they will fit based on other forum comments.

Brightness appears to be the same on the R10R when using a protected 16340 or a CR123. The only problem I have with this light is that it will not fit protected Solarforce 16340 cells. They will slide in, but they are so wide that I could never get them back out without some extreme measures. I am a little disappointed with this because these were the best 16340 cells I could find after a lot of research. I have tested them using my Thunder AC680 hobby charger and they have a ~725 mAh capacity when being discharged at the industry standard .2C down to 3v. I have a manufacturer’s sample protected 16340 I got from a friend who was evaluating for selling them which also tests to ~720mAh @ .2C with a BA III and it fits with no problem. The only issue is that these cells are not available from any known source, whereas I can buy the Solarforce cells for $3.50 each from http://www.solarforceflashlight-sales.com/.

The DQG 18650 XM-L2 is starting to grow on me. After adding all of the o-rings, fixing the incorrectly placed o-ring for the lens which fixed the beam problem, and greasing up the threads, it is a much nicer light. I still don’t like the fact that I can only run a Nitecore NL183 or Trustfire Flame in it, but perhaps I can find something else that works too.

Either way, I am very happy with my purchases. Now I am just waiting for the JETbeam RRT-01 and the Olight S10-ti.

For the time being, the Fenix PD22 G2, despite not being able to accept 16340’s, is still my favorite EDC. I ordered a 16mm Noctigon copper star with an XM-L2 T6 3C NW from Intl-Outdoor to swap into the JETbeam RRT-01. I have a feeling that will be my favorite EDC once that is all squared away.

My EDC suggestions are in my signature… but I’ve EDC’d the following lights:

  • SK-68 (clipped to purse) + iTP A3 EOS (also clipped to purse)
  • ZL H51w (by itself, clipped to purse with some minor mods)
  • ZL H51w + Skyray King (or XinTD C8)
  • ZL H51w + Convoy S3 (both clipped to purse, S3 had a L2-PC2 clip)
  • ZL H51w + ZL SC52 (again, clipped to purse, same H51 mods)
  • ZL H51w (clipped to purse) + RRT01 (clipped to purse) + L3 L10-219 (inside purse pocket) + iTP A3 EOS (key chain)

That last set is what I’ve been doing lately. It’s a total of 4 lights, but each serves different purposes. I use the L3 L10-219 the most, but would probably use a H51c instead if I didn’t get teased for wearing a flashlight as a necklace.

I got the Olight S10 titanium bead blasted light on Friday. I’m really liking it so far. Its a bit on the greenish side which I think may be because of the extreme anti reflective coating but I’m not sure. It won’t fit solarforce 16340’s which is disappointing, but it fits my other 16340’s, so it is not the end of the world. Its very light and by far the shortest EDC light I own now. Overall a worthwhile purchase and will definitely be in the rotation.

I also have the bead blasted S10. I actually wish I’d gotten the polished one instead. I discovered that I’m not a fan of the bead blasting because:

1. It feels like I’m holding a stick of chalk. The texture isn’t comfortable in the hand.
2. It looks very similar to aluminum with natural colored anodizing. What’s the point of getting titanium if it’s going to look like aluminum?

I also have an aluminum S10 that I like much better. It’s lighter and the texture feels great in the hand.

Both my S10s had awful tints. Upgrading the emitter to XML2 neutral and replacing the yellow-tinted lens helped. But it’s never going to get a great tint as an underpowered current-controlled light powering an XML/XML2.

Some projects I’m considering:

  1. Buy an S20 and then see if the pill is interchangeable with the S10. If so, then I’d get slightly more power and a much better UI, but with the S10’s small EDC sized form factor. I’d also upgrade the emitter and replace the lens.
  2. For a more ambitious project I might try gutting the pill and replacing the innards. The idea would be to replace the driver with a 3 amp Nangj 105c with DrJones driver, upgrade to 20mm triple star with edges filed down so it fits, and a 20mm triple TIR optic. Emitter could be either triple XPG2 or triple Nichia 219. Battery would be IMR 16340.
  3. For an even more ambitious project, same as previous build but use the S20 body. Chop the body in 3 pieces and remove center section so size is similar to the S10, but will fit an IMR 18350. Use a 5 amp DrJones driver powering triple XPG2.

Ah man, I love EDC threads.

I have an old Fenix PD20 and a Nitecore EC1. I love them both. The EC1 is one of the smallest lights I’ve ever seen, but IMO it has two downsides to EDC. One, the pocket clip has the screws in it. So every time I clip it on to my pants it kind of wears on the lip of the pant. Second is the lack of a tail switch. Depending on what kind of EDC you’re doing, a tail switch can be very, very handy. If you have to hold a gun in one hand and an EC1 in another hand it’s cumbersome to turn on the light.

I keep going back to my ShiningBeam S-mini XP-G. Never thought the 22.6mm vs. 24mm tube would be a significant difference, the super grip knurling, nice beam, simple style, and 3 modest power levels suit my needs. Sometimes it wears a DC-fix diffuser and becomes a dedicated walking light.

S-mini when I know I will be out after dark, and an ITP A3 is always in my front pocket below my wallet.

Upon JohnnyMac’s post and Firelight2’s modding post, I ordered a JETbeam RRT-01. Just got it yesterday. I think my search for the perfect EDC is over. This thing is very short, which makes me happy. I love the fact that the pocket clip is attached with screws so it doesn’t move around. I love the infinitely variable output via the magnetic ring. The battery tube is nice and fat and has ample room for any 16340 battery, including my preferred Solarforce 880 mAh (720 mAh @ .2C tested) 16340’s, which wont fit in a lot of my EDC lights. This light just oozes quality and was worth every last penny ($57 from Fasttech).

I have a Noctigon 16mm direct thermal copper star with an XM-L2 T6 3C NW mounted on it on the way from Intl Outdoor. Once that thing is installed, it will truly be the perfect EDC. I see no need to look further. However, I probably will because I am an addict.

Nice! Another great thing about it is it takes 18350 cells. I have some on the way for mine. :slight_smile:

I don’t really see a need to mod the emitter on this light. It has the best tint of all my Cree-based lights, second only to a Nichia 219. Maybe I just got lucky though.

Really tempted by the RRT01 especially seeing that one can use the body of the Niteye Eye15 to make it into a 18650 light.
