Just ordered a couple of folding knives.
Looking for something that’s priced reasonably to sharpen them and perhaps others around the kitchen.
I use an Accusharp for day to day sharpening.
I prefer sharpening by hand (diamond lapping paste on MDF, Micromesh on glass, leather and denim strop) but it’s not for everyone. Are you looking for a guided sharpening system?
i use the B9 for daily treatment
I use a “Stirling Sharpener” I just looked for them online, and I don’t think they exist anymore. I’ve had this little thing for… wow it has been so long I can’t even remember (5+ years). It sharpens junk steel like a champ, and sharpens good steel even better.
Grabbed it out of a gun show for $15.
I have a Japanese whetstone but you need some practice to use it consistently (which I cant do… Yet)
My GoogleFu is strong…http://www.sterlingsharpener.com/home.html
Stirling with an ‘i’; I found that as well, but unless they changed their design quite a bit it’s not the same company.
Sorry I assumed it was a typo. Funny there would two so closely named.
Yeah, I think I got the cheap knockoff that was piggy backing off the ‘big name’. I’ve used the heck out of it though, works extremely well.
Edit: If they are the same company I could see their current design being superior. When I’m just trying to get a quick edge I sometimes hit the metal case.
I use a “Hunter Honer”. I was told it is idiot proof. Works very nice for me. I’m not into the knife thing a whole lot but I like ’em sharp. This thing delivers.
I've been using one for almost 30 years. Sharpens plain edges, serrated edges, scissors etc.
Gives a very good edge.

Think I’m going to send all my knives to Chloe, but I fear she won’t have enough tomatoes to test them on.
I have the EZE-LAP system which I’ve been trying to master, and the Japanese whetstone which I’m passable with.
But lately I have been trying to master the upside down coffee cup. It gives a nice edge, it’s fast and it’s cheap. In this case it’s “good, fast, cheap: pick all three”
What I like best are DMT diamond laps, but they are expensive, especially in the larger sizes. What I use most is a two sided black 8” stone. I liked a tungsten carbide wedge sharpener but don’t have it any more. I also have a white Arkansas stone, and a razor stone that I use to sharpen my straight edge.
My ceramic knife does not stand being sharpened by a hard stone or lap. I use wet and dry sandpaper on it.
these things work great and you can find just the stick for about 2 bucks…
i use an 8 inch dmt stone without the holes in it which is mostly what you see at hardware stores…they come in different sizes with a different grit on each side…they are impregnated with diamond dust and are guaranteed to not vary more than 1/1000th of an inch as long as you own the stone…they are easy to use and only require water to work but they are expensive…i have to use a better grade stone since all of my blades are basically hard as files…
If any of them work well, then yes.
I’d like something that isn’t expensive and is easy to use.
I bought the one mentioned here (and mentioned over in this longer thread). I haven't assembled or used it yet, but it seems very solid. I bought it here on Ebay at $27 & free shipping.

The fact that you aren’t sure makes the Sharpmaker a great choice. If you want something less expensive and perhaps more available, try a Smith’s or Croc Sticks. They are similar but i have never gotten the results that the Sharpmaker gives without a lot of trouble.
My friend is a hobbyist knifemaker and he recommended to me the Spyderco Sharpmaker as the best value sharpening system.
