What wildlife did you spot tonight?

Nothing “scares” ’em off chemically, like cayenne pepper, green-apple spray, peppermint oil, nothing like that?

What does "and had" mean? You ate it? Lol

Good story, BTW.

I have an acre, am on the side of town, and the dog keeps most varmints away with her scent. If you’ve ever seen a raccoon go through a nasty trash-can, you’d know they are pretty immune to “smell” as a deterrent.

I grew up in West Texas on ranches 1/2 my life. I grew up tracking and catching armadillos- would mark their ears with my knife (like our sheep) and let them go. They didn’t do any harm out there. Today I sometimes catch these guys by hand (usually early evening) and take them down the road to the next river and throw em’ out the truck into our wildlife preserve. But this guy (and his buddy I shot three months back) were very LATE night nocturnal and VERY destructive to my gardens last summer.

So sadly I had to drop this guy tonight- circle of (my) life though. But raccoons never get a pass- they have destroyed a 1/4 acre of crops in one night in my gardens- several times. But they’ve only been a problem a few times the last decade here in Kansas when I was either between dogs OR had ducks- they love to kill ducks.

Interestingly. I hear coyotes within 100 yards almost every night, yet I have NEVER seen one at ANY time of day or night on my land. I think the resident foxes (which are cool and play with my cats at night) and my dog keep them at bay (which is very good for their health)

I’ve never heard of any “respectable” people eating an armadillo- so they are probably delicious

Lol! I've 'had' wild rabbit, squirrel, venison... too respectable ;)

We had an armadillo on two.5 acres but it seems to have moved from one burrow to a rosemary bush, 15' diameter, in a different area. It ducks in the bush very quickly when I approach. This is in the Hill Country and not so much a pest in the area.

armadillo = oppossum on the half-shell

Never saw that. Only coons here just raid the leftover catfood. Look like huge morbidly-obese cats ’til I see ’em eating with their hands.

’Though they shriek up a storm sometimes. Had a family in the neighbor’s tree out front making these wraithlike noises that I thought someone opened up the Gates To Hell next door or something. Nope, just coons shrieking at each other.

Hmm, no wonder RC likes serial-killer movies…

Yep, anything with opposable thumbs is evil.

And I do like stories of criminals, especially serial killers.

Possum surprise... either a delicacy or an armadillo jumps 3 feet in the air. ;)

Hmm, so how do you feel about ducks?

Ducks are cool in my book.

I wonder why raccoons kill them...

They eat them.

Unno, maybe they’re trying to be the non-Aussie version of koalas.

Koalas look all fuzzy and cute, but can potentially be quite nasty. And their mating rituals are more like rape than courtship.

Tastes like chicken in a raccoons' book.

To EAT them

We had ducks for years, then lost our dog. Before Queso (the new dog) got old enough, that is when we had the most trouble. A dog that covers the entire property a few times a day (border collie in our case- no problem!) is the absolute best solution to any varmits hanging around- except for armadillos and the occasional possum.

Then there are our 2 yr old cats who keep the mice and rats down nicely— if they’d just NOT bring them in the house to play (kill) them slowly- uhg!

Well, the Buck is with the Doe tonight - bless! I suppose soon there will be a bambi too! (there may have been 3 there, but my boy was very noisy and scared them)
Saw Mr Fox again, but he was in font of us tonight and kept hiding.
!!

We have a few bucks and doe as well but I haven't seen any fawns which I think is a little strange. The local university is a safe spot and see more families there.

I saw a dark spotted, white feral hog on the side of the FM tonight. I hardly ever see them but they aren't rare by any means. Ugly!

Damn, last night we saw a lot of deer, 4 together in 1 field a couple around the others, then we came upon one that let is get about 20m from it - didn’t bother it was just munching. Didn’t take the camera :person_facepalming:
Tonight we only saw one, but was pretty close (I think the same as the one last night) did get a couple of nice, in focus shots -

i am jealous.
by the time my flashlight shows “wildlife”
and i am ready to take its picture, it is gone.

of course, some “freeze”, but i am slow.

i must work on my hand/eye coordination.
i have to rely on my trail cams to take pics.
