As per the subject. Already checked the BLF rules page but it doesn’t mention that, and using the forum search function didn’t bring up anything either.
I guess PM usage would be ok, but what about public posts?
I’m asking especifically because of this, TL;DR: me and @litris are having a conversation and it’s sometimes less than ideal as he doesn’t speak any English and has to use a translator. I speak some of his native Spanish and I think it would perhaps work better if we could both use that language, but I won’t do it if it runs afoul of the forum’s policy or is otherwise unadvised.
Tagging our great forum admin @sb56637 to try and get an official response.
I’m pretty sure that any language is allowed on the forum, though of course if someone doesn’t post in English they might not get nearly as many responses.
(I frequently just ignore posts that aren’t in English.)
sb, for example, is fluent in both English and Spanish, and he sometimes posts in Spanish in response to others that post in Spanish.
Don’t forget that other languages makes it hard for the moderators/admin to follow conversations. Translations take extra work and might change the meaning.
Just a thought, what I’ve seen done on other forums, the two of you Could post in both as a courtesy. More work for you, but if you do each post in Spanish, and include a translation, you get direct communication but the rest of us can continue to blunder through. (honestly @liteis 's translation posts are easier to follow than some people that are English speaking… lol), and you save the rest of us the hassle of tranlating it.
Honestly I’m trying to keep it out of PMs because I’m enjoying and learning a lot in all this stuff about custom hex files…

Does Discourse have an option to translate someone’s post (if you click on a button)?
I know that on American Amazon, if someone posts a review in a foreign language, there’s a button to click on to translate the review to English.
It has, but I don’t know how much the API access costs. Have seen it in some other Discourse forums. But I always found it somehow annoying because you have to click on “translate” for every post and it is weird when every second post has a different language.
Thanks a lot for asking. Yeah, I intentionally haven’t created a strict policy on that because I appreciate the language and cultural diversity we have here.
I Like to think I have no bias. It seems like English is understood by many, if not most here. The problem with using a different language is that, like for @raccoon, and myself, posts in a different language may be just skipped. Which will not only limit responses, but keep what could be good information from being read by a significant number of the members…
If I was not an English speaker, I would do my best to use translation as that seems to be the most effective way to communicate with the majority of the members. Just as a courtesy if for no other reason.

I use the “Google Translate” extension for my Opera web browser.
It’s a decent solution, but if there were a translate button next to each foreign language post, that would be a better solution for me.
