When a new flashlight arrives...

I am curious, if anyone else does things when they first get a light beyond putting in a battery and testing it out
Maybe take it apart to make sure its tight (to see what it looks like  ), lube the threads, pull out your favourite light to compare, stuff like that?

Use DeoxIT on the contacts

I like to clean the driver contacts and wipe all the threads down with an alchahol swab to remove all factory grime, and relube with “Finish Line Extreme Fluoro” fluorinated grease.

Yep,amazing stuff.I look the light over for defects and lube threads and then pop batteries in.

is that fluoro grease comparable to krytox? Well anyhoose I clean threads make sure everythings is tight, lube threads and then compare to other lights at night heck im still doing that now between reading posts lol

Fluorinated greases can attack anodization…

This doesn’t hurt it.

I just can’t help myself I have to link to that dreaded place.
Grease and lubes.

According to link krytox or fluoronated grease is a super lubricant ?

their marketing department must have had a ‘productive’ meeting

i’m going to call my product ultimate lubricant, it contains calcium, magnesium, hydrogen hydroxide, trace amounts of iron, copper, sodium and chlorine, and is extremely hydrophilic

Well Bort. I guess that’s about it. There’s not much else to do with a new flashlight besides cleaning, lubing and shining it around.

I put it next to some other flashlights, so it can make some new friends.

I do measurements on it with the DMM.

I put it next to my keyboard when I'm working at the computer.

I put it on the living room table when I'm watching TV.

I carry it around in my pocket.

That continues a while, until it either ends up in a drawer and finally an ebay auction or I like it that much that it actually makes it in my rotation.

I'm sure some of that sounds familiar to you

+1  bang on Steve.

Sound extremely familiar! Except instead of going into ebay, the ones that lose their shine quickly usually end up in the case with the rest of uninspiring lights.

Ya
got to have backups you know. Just in case the other fifty lights fail. Thinking ahead.

That's actually quite interesting, some flashlights that you buy just can't keep your interest for a longer time even though there's nothing wrong with them.

Sometimes you can't get used to their UI, sometimes you don't like the emitter being slightly off-center (even though it doesn't affect the beam at all...), sometimes they just don't do what you expected them to do, sometimes they just feel wrong.

While there are others that, without technically being vastly different than other lights you already have, find their way into your hands much more often right from the beginning.

Everytime my flashlight arrives.

I take picture of the packaging with flashlight in it.

I take picture of the box / bubble wrap with flashlight in it.

I take picture of the flashlight.

And I put it together with its other friends and help them take a group picture

Many times the only thing that causes me to lose interest is when another comes soon after and takes it’s place with it’s new light smell.

if i got a flashlight, i will test whether it will work first.

- I test the light to see if it works.

- I tear it down completely and wipe off all of the oils.

- Clean the emitter dome with a q-tip.

- Check to see if it needs a new tailcap button (90% do because mine all need to have a perfect switch gap)

- Regrease and reassemble

-Enjoy light for a week and repeat
