I recieved the 6-Emitter SkyRay today !
I have already torn it down, done some measurements & basic evaluations & comparisons to my other SRK’s in my collection.
Here is the 4 SRK lights. *(Left to Right.) Skyray 6XT6, Skyray Kung M4, Skyray King WarmWhite, Skyray King C/W.
- First impressions when i recieved it, was the packaging, it was not in the nicer looking foam-lined white SRK boxes my other SRK’s arrived in, This one arrived in a plain beat-up carboard coffin/box with the light, cells, and charger bubble wrapped inside the box, (with half of the bubbles burst) and the box was in a standard padded mailer.
The light arrived with a couple dings and scratches, but overall not damaged badly.
_ the quality of the build is somwhat lesser overall than the other SRKs.
The Anodizing looks more like a baked-on paint than a good smooth Ano as the others are. The dimensions are very similar to the standard Kings,
and the switch is different than the other three. The 6 emitters were not centered perfectly, ( i fixed that and centered them better after i tore it down.)
I do like the switch/button on this one better than the others though, as it seems less rattly, smoother, better looking and better constructed.
As seen in this pic, the Skyray 6XT6 on the left, and the standard SRK on the right.
The bezel is Stainless Steel, came with some grease on threads, ( though the rear tailcap is missing the o-ring) and the usual known SRK design dimensions.
- The first power up with the 4 Red Ultrafire 3000mah 18650s after charging in the I4 charger, ( voltage of all 4 at 4.12 v) is that this light is FLOODY !
much bigger hotspot than the 3 other SRK lights.
This was expected with the smaller reflectors, and more emitters. Tint was close to that of the M4 Kung, but much floodier.
Disasembly was some what easy. No locking compound was used.
Stainless bezel easily unscrewed, Driver popped out easily using a wooden dowel to push it out from the switch opening, polished aluminum reflector was removed after removing a single off-set screw through the emitter base-plate.
The Tear-down revealed the Driver is closely the same as the drivers in the standard 3-emitter Kings, with the torrid coils & design.
I did notice however the emitter wires were of a very thing guage, possibly 28 guage, and most likely limiting the current to the emitters. ( i will likely mod these to a heavier guage soon.)
Driver:
The Driver on the bottom looks almost identical to the standard Kings, and only the Kung M4 has a different driver.
*Kung M4 has the green driver on the far left.)
Also determined the 6 emitters are wired in dual-parallel configuration, with lots of thermal Paste between the stars and the base plate.
(*each of the three outputs of the standard SRK driver powers 2 of the emitters in Parallel, as seen in the photo below:
This is the first SRK of the four i have that has a good seperation between the High & Low modes, ( low is much lower than the Lows on the other three lights) And finally they are doing it right with a Hidden strobe !
I don’t have a lumen sphere, so i can not take measurements of the output, but will add beam shots of all four soon in an update here.
I took a tail-cap amperage reading of both the modes, with a Mac/Fluke ET73DMMA, with # 12 full-copper high amperage Leads.
with the cells fully charged, after a 60 second run i got:
+- 7.36 DC Amps on High
- 0.59 DC Amps on Low+
- as seen in the photos, on HIGH:
- on LOW:
overall if your looking for the floodiest light in the SRK family this one throws a flat wall of light. It does not throw as far as the other three,
even the warm white SRK.
I have not test run times, output, heat build-up, etc. yet, but will do some night beam shots of all four sometime this week and update this review/comparo with them.
Some measurements, specifications, and my evaluation of Pros and Cons:
Overview:
+Battery:- 4 x 18650 in parallel
Switch:- Electronic
Modes:- 2+1: High, Low + hidden strobe
LED-Type:- 6 x XM-L (Cool White)
Lens:- Regular Glass
Tailstands:- Yes
TailCap Amps:- HIGH- 7.36 A LOW-0.59+
Pros:
+Very Floody, bright budget multi-emitter light
Feels solid during use
Hidden strobe
4x18650 should give plenty of runtime, especialy on the good Low at only 0.59 amps.
Very bright
Unscrew body for lock-out
better Switch feel & appearance than other SRKs.
Stainless Steel Bezel+
Cons:
+Anodizing looks cheaper than the others.
Poor Packaging.
Arrived with dings, dents.
overall output don’t seem to be much better than standard 3-emitter SRK, only much floodier.
missing O-ring on tail cap.
Emitters were not centered perfectly.
looks a bit cheaper than the original SRKs.+
