Preliminary LD-3 datasheet link:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/4utteoho2x8pbyv/LD-3%20datasheet%20preliminary.pdf?dl=0

Highlights/summary:

  • Optimised LD-2 hardware (not much left to improve there) - very low internal resistance (sub 5mOhm), low active state current consumption (1.6mA typ.), reliable 1S-4S operation/support
  • User configurable settings/UI - max. current, mode groups, moonlight, mode memory, CC/DD on high, mode order, strobes, dual overtemp. protection with adjustable ext. threshold, cofiguration mode password
  • Adjustable current in UI - no need to change resistors to get desired current
  • Option to choose between constant current/direct drive (CC/DD) on high mode
  • Configuration mode password - prevents end users to accidentally enter into configuration mode and mess-up settings

Everything is in datasheet this time, and I think there is no need to write long, hard to read text in topic,so here are pics of datasheet:

If you don’t mind, your pictures are showing up a little small for me. So I copied some of the important bits.

I’m interested in how you achieved such a low internal resistance, but perhaps that’s a trade secret

Internal resistance depends mostly on fet resistance, nothing magical there, the lower fet resistance, the better, but there is a point where potential gain (output current) is neglible, and that point is IMO about 5mOhm of driver internal resistance.

What about a single XML type emitter + 2S? Is it XPH35 realy?

That’s what I thought, just wan’t sure how you shaved off another 5 from the “big FET” driver. Just a newer/better FET?

Led4power was so kind to send me the LD3 prototype, but I have not had enough time yet to do a proper review. But the bottomline is that the LD3 has (almost or exact?) the same hardware as the LD2 but the UI has dramatically changed: it is clicky only now, with a wagonload of useful settings and a very well functioning configuration procedure. I like it a lot sofar!

Wait! djozz, did you say clicky only? I know a lot of lights are clicky, but sometimes a clicky just won’t do. Wonder why e-switch was left out! Crying

Otherwise, just from reading the page that PD zoomed in, it looks to be a very worthy upgrade for LD-2! I just hope LD-2 stays available for e-switch lights, or another alternative is offered. Wink

EDIT: I just glanced over the preliminary datasheet, and I’m amazed at the depth of configurability and functionality of this driver! Still wish it would support e-switch, but for a clicky switch driver, I don’t think there’s one out there that compares!

@pilotdog
Note <10mohm for DD drivers, that means just that, less than 10mohm.Since there are a lot of different DD drivers and even more different FETs used, internal resistance varies from maybe 2mohm to 10mohm,but most of them have 4-6mohm.

Well, i was always wanted an Eu source for a good drivers like yours that are suitable to drive a single XML emitter type with 2( or more) 18650s, especialy in the 17/20mm form factor cause atm we have only MNT ones

Also a good driver for XHP35 in the same form factor driven by 4 Liions

Clicky one? Good for me

I run out of ROM space in uC bacause of configurable settings. There will be e-switch version, but not sure when.

Thanks! After I saw the datasheet, I figured that was the case. This really does look to be an awesome driver! Good job! I wouldn’t have thought there would be much room for improvement after LD-2. Hardware-wise, it seems I was right, but the UI of the LD-3 is incredible!

As far as i know from LD-2 :

1)This driver is compatible with 4x Li-ions for use with xhp35

2)It isn’t a buck driver , it needs 1 cell for 3V leds , and 2 cells for 6V leds

Nice! The configurable modes and possibility to have CC in lower modes and DD in high modes is a killer feature.

So in direct drive mode it is not limited to 12A, correct? It would behave just like an ordinary DD?

There will be 4 versions of LD-3 available. 3A,6A,9A and 12Amps. DD feature on high is firmware regulation override, and there are some theoretical limits for DD current because of that,as shown in graph:

Looks very good.

Is there a typo in the data sheet? The Current set sub-menu text states that the 12A version can be reduced to 9A, but the chart indicates that it can be reduced to 8A?

I will definitely need some of these, probably 10-12 of them. Sometimes the side e-switch is a nice plus, in a smaller light, but I don’t have a problem waiting for that one to come out.

Please let us know the price and availability of these as I sure don’t want to miss out. Smile

Great work, LD-2 is my go to driver for all of my lights that I’m going to use myself. Looking forward to resistor free LD3 !

Max. Current setting in UI is different thing, for 12A driver you could set it anywhere between 8 – 12A;all modes will be scaled down by same percentage. Graph shows max. theoretical DD currents on high mode (if you choose DD in settings). For example,if you want to build triple xp-l,you should choose 12A version;with good battery max. Current on high could be 13-14A with DD activated. It’s important that this “predicted” current is lower than max. DD current from graph. It would be bad to choose 6A for driving triple xp-l,since its max. DD current is lower than those 13-14Amps;driver would limit current to value from graph (9.2A at 4.2V and lower than that at lower voltages).

So since I won, could I use this to drive at 11amps from 4S cells? It’s only clicky switch right now though, not e-switch?

4x XHP35?

This would generate too much heat for little 17mm driver with typ. batteries and leds (output power is ~175W). With enabled DD on high – maybe, but for these big bad setups you should wait for LD-M3 to do that job. Yes, for now only clicky switch is supported.
