Judging the entries:

A panel of Judges composed of current BLF members from all walks of life and from different countries will judge the build entries to the competition.

What criteria do we Judge the contestants on?

  • Uniqueness/ Innovativeness of the build: Is it a one of a kind? Different? Using new ideas?
  • Skill Level of the Finished Build: Judged fairly on the persons access to tools, materials and abilities.
  • Enthusiasm to Participate: Is the builder veteran or new? Did they enter with little skills, tools or knowledge but tried their best anyway, possibly not even finishing?
  • Fit for Use: Was the light made for a specific useful purpose?
  • Best New Idea. Surprising us with something new is a big plus!
  • Most Simplistic Build: Best results for the least amount of effort, cost or work done, on a budget perhaps.
  • Most Technical Build: New driver design or custom firmware is a plus especially when open source and shared in true BLF spirit.
  • Thoroughness of the Build Thread: Did the builder do a good job of showing and explaining to the forum how they did the steps in the build?
  • Documenting also the Failures & Obstacles: How did the builder solve the inevitable problems? Documenting the obstacles and using the power of the BLF community to solve them is seen as a big plus!
  • Following the Guidelines: Did the builder follow the rules and guidelines written in the contest thread?

Some history of how the yearly contest started:

Old-Lumens was a predominant member of Budget Light Forum who loved to make things, particularly flashlights and related items, with his own hands.

He went even further and encouraged others to do likewise by starting the annual Old-Lumens Contest which involves members making their own flashlight using only hand tools in one category or machines in another.

Sadly Justin (Old-Lumens) passed away in 2016, we here at BLF wish him to rest in peace and to continue to celebrate his life by hosting the yearly Old-Lumens Competition.

We thank the sponsors for their generosity, and would like to see members supporting their business.
Please look to them when purchasing quality lights and accessories:

If you are a store owner who would like to donate a prize or have good relations to people that would like to support this great BLF community event then please contact us.

Let the building begin and have fun! Smile Thumbs Up

Awww yeah! I was hoping this would happen. What a great array of sponsors and prizes.

I’ll be throwing my hat into the Hand Made ring, I just haven’t decided what I’m going to make yet. Best of luck to all of the entrants!

I would love to do a build for this contest. But I need to know if my 3D printer is allowed. I draw all my own parts from scratch. I assume a 3D printer is allowed as long as the models are your own creation?

Yes, 3D printing has been used in the past. I’m looking forward to seeing what you come up with! Good luck!

Yep, we had one last year (and it was super interesting). That’s a good question about what category it belongs in, I assume “machine made”, but maybe one of the organizers could chime in.

What type of printer is it?

Standard 3D printers are fine and a new build would enter into the Machine Made category Thumbs Up

My guess would be that it would fall under machine made, comparable to someone designing parts and using a CNC machine. But hopefully we can get an official ruling.

I’m sure if you 3d-print something that’s otherwise allowed to be an “off-the-shelf” part, like a switch boot or centering ring, that would be fine. My real question is, where does the 3-Doodler fall? It seems like a hand tool to me Silly

That is a good question, maybe a smart thing to do if concerned about this would be to build and fully document the build from start to finish then if you’re happy with it make a build thread and release it in stages.

It doesn’t really matter how the build thread is released to the public as long as the work is done within the stated timeframe but allowing some comments from members is a good idea in between stages of the build I think.

It’s a FlashForge Creator Pro. So it’s FFF, the most standard printer type there is.
