Hey watch guys. Has anyone of you tried a Carnival watch?

And how much difference would it make if the write Mineral Glass or Sapphire, is $20 price difference reasonable?

https://www.ebay.com/itm/323638535615 mineral

https://www.ebay.com/itm/283005827166 sapphire

I prefer the black dial with dark band and blue tritium markers.

Thanks for input Smile

I haven’t personally. As for sapphire , on watches the sapphire is quite thin which can be more prone to shattering . However it is of course more scratch resistant. If it’s not going to get beat on, maybe dress kind of watch. I would be happy to pay $20 for sapphire, so my answer would be yes. Unfortunately I can not tell you how good(or not) those watches are. But bare in mind, you can get nice used seiko/citizen dress style watches for around the same cost(usually not with sapphire though). Just a thought . Those have a strong history.

Thank you for your insight.
I have 2 watches only, imagine that! Wink

On my Skagen 809 the super special stap is broken, again, and on my Traser P5900 the clockwork is kaput, again.
(And I’ve mad ne straps for that one already as the faux leather part gave up).

Got that one for $108, the cheapest watch with tritium markers at that time.
I just love that detail but atm it’s more like $180, minimum.

So I liked the look of that darkened steel band but I have no clue how durable that is.
Oh, another fact, I have rather girlish hands, that 38mm Traser was perfect for me, this Carnival says 39mm.

Not so easy to find watches smaller than an old USSR allarm clock these days.
Everything must be huge, the watches, the “phones”, the cars.
I prefer my Sony XZ1compact and a seperate mp3 player, I’d love my Mazda Miata back (not so good with kids) and I want a smallish watch.

Sorry for the rant Wink

Adahn if you’re looking for a field or flieger style watch San Martin’s are fantastic. They have Seiko-level or better lume on all their models and offer their flieger in quartz or an automatic NH35.

Happy Birthday wle, very nice gift there, wear in good health.

Adahn, maybe not your style(dont know) But for excellent value, tough as old boots, check the russian watches out called vostok. Lots of different ones, but $50 or so gets you a new automatic. They can go to several 100 bucks, some chronos etc. But bang for buck, little different, worth a look.

Seiko auto day today

Does anyone here have experience with the dual-time/GMT Vostoks? They are super cheap for an automatic with GMT complication (and are actually depth rated unlike Parnis/Corguet).

I dont, but i will be adding a vostok to my little family at some point. There are some really nice watches, bang for buck though……..hard to beat. There is a little history there to, they moved in the 2nd WW and still produce from their plant. Yes proper rated, own auto movement which they supply other manufacturers with. They make for the russian military, so will be tough n doubt.

Depending on budget as they can shoot up some, some of the chrono’s are very smart. But your starting to go to and past the $300 mark. No doubt your getting a lot more for your money still.

I have this saved for a potential future buy……

New in just now, JDM 5610. These squares seem so tiny! Use to the 56(king) so this feels small, will take a little getting use to.

I saw GMTs going for <$100 USD on Meroma, that’s why I was wondering if it’s actually just a slaved 24hr hand vs independent GMT. Don’t fully trust the translation in the product descriptions

Afaik Vostok are automatics. There are dedicated threads over on the watch forum for these pieces on watchuseek. Might be worth a bit of reading up, also on Vostok mods. They are reputable , nothing I would say dodgy with the brand. Sellers however is another matter , buy the seller is a well known term.

Meroma is a legit dealer for them. After a bit of sleuthing they are just 24hr hands that match the main hour hand, but the 24hr bezel allows for the same use. Now to decide on which one I want…

Just checked the sire out Meranom which has vostoks…….not a good idea Facepalm

https://meranom.com/en

Really like
https://meranom.com/en/vostok-europe/vostok-europe-watch-vostok-europe-a...
and a little more wallet friendly
https://meranom.com/en/amfibia/vostok-watch-amphibia-black-sea-2432-4407...

Importing from russian fed is still a good bit cheaper on certain models though. Could mean the difference to a good deal or real bargain!

Scratched my itch for another SKX with something that is a much better value propostition:

Ceramic bezel, sapphire, hacking + handwinding, much nicer bracelet for about half the price of an SKX or 5KX (or the Long Island Watch Islander/SKX which uses the same case and parts and is being sold for twice the price… Shocked )

Heimdallr/Sharkey’s “Marinemaster” dial SKX. They have the standard SKX dial layout in a couple colors and this “shark tooth” style one too:

On Heimdallr’s website or from wrwatches.com

The former has a ton of the Chinese brands like this, San Martin and others that are doing both homage/mashup designs and some orginals as well. I’ve been very satisfied with everything from them. Orient is my Japanese brand of choice and far better quality for the money over Seiko, but both brands have still been pushing their prices higher and higher while changing little or even downgrading watches in Seiko’s case (SKX and Alpinist).

This one is my little ones new G, his choice and he wanted a square. I did recommend the 5600 size, as it looks spot on in proportion.

Watch this! Nah, not funny, I get it Wink

Anyways, I have a question for the horologists out there because I could disassemble and reassemble nearly every folding knife for you but there’s not much more that opening the back of a standard watch that I’m capable of.

So here’s the watch:

I have bought it in a used condition from the UK ($5 for the watch, £6 for shipping via a friendly Englishman) so when my wife is getting asked how her name’s written she could just point at the watch for them to read. That’s more my kind of humour but she likes the watch anyways.

I would like to clean the watch, maybe in an ultrasonic bath, I’ll try it with a link to see if the dark color goes off.
What’s the trick to remove the crown and the clockwork? I’ve seen vids and pics with little holes to press in or such, but I wasn’t lucky with the only hole I’ve found on this one.

Any hint is appreciated, as well as any information about the brand. The back has a print on the inside saying R.I.C. Hongkong and Sutus Quartz on the outside but except of some more models on Ebay and Etsy (most of them cheap fashion watches, this one is the most elegant I found) I can find nothing on the web.

Thanks in advance

Endre

it has threads, see if you can unscrew it by pushing something in the little hole that is in line with the shaft

oh wait, do this first – there is a word ‘push’, above the shaft
try pushing that and pulling the crown out
that is all that is holding the movement in.., the crown shaft

or possibly you unscrew the crown while pushing the ‘push’

(also that round nylon ‘adapter’ thing can come off now)

and then to put it back just push in

but i might not try what you are doing, getting the color off
reason – it might come off unevenly and look bad
