Is there a table/summary somewhere that would list basic, approximate info on popular LED emitters used in flashlights (e.g. efficacy, CRI, R9, CCT, max output, operating voltage range, etc.)?
Maybe we should launch a Google docs spreadsheet, where we collect all reliable tests done by community members and list the basic “numbers”, as well as the name of the person who tested and a link to the detailed test.
Quite a lot of work to set up and add all past tests initially, but not much work to maintain and add new ones after that, and would be a great “at a glance” resource.
Imo relevant are:
- Footprint size
- Emitter size
- Emitter shape
- Domed?
- Easy to dedome?
- Lumen (max output)
- Current (max output)
- Voltage (max output)
- Lumen (sweetspot)
- Current (sweetspot)
- Voltage (sweetspot)
- CRI
- R9
- Tint
- Does it have noticeable tint-shift?
- Who tested it
- Link to test
I like this idea.
And it could be an extension of Flaslight Wiki.
Good idea, do not forget Luminance (important for maximum throw)
I knew I forgot an important metric
Although emitter size + lumen should have that covered, right? If we have the emitting surface + total luminous flow… But I do not have much clue about this. Optics has never been my strength - which is kinda embarrassing for someone graduating in nanophotonics
On newer emitters (mostly flip chip ones) it is not easy to determine the size of the LES due to sideways emitted light… for these the values in my test are only some sort of best guess (but it is mentioned in the test anyway)
Don’t forget @LuxWad’s contribution. …
did he test LEDs for real measurements?
It doesn’t look he included those metrics.
But everything you guys created for the forum’s benefit is already pinned in “Flashlight Modding & DIY Parts”.
So basically a summary of LEDs, with the specs stated in the datasheets…
I think in such a summary of tested led should one be measured values, not those from datasheets
Absolutely agreed, which is why I hope you continue with your “real life” testing.
And since we’re already at it, something similar for popular/famous flashlights would be great. Just a gdocs spreadsheet with size, battery type, emitters, additional features like USB charging, lm and cd, driver type (and where known efficiency) and price.
Allow me to introduce you to @Parametrek, maintainer of flashlights.parametrek.com.
It’s based off @djozz’s tests where applicable, and specsheets otherwise. I have a spreadsheet with all the emitters and their relevant tests, but haven’t posted that yet
