Where do we buy this beauty l2 ???
I don’t know what it would cost, but me personally? I’d absolutely LOVE a Titanium L2.
Well, me being a Ti fanatic that is a given, as I am really really impressed with this machined finish one.
Still looking at the best emitter choice, thinking the SST-40 isn’t it. VERY high amp draw for what is coming out the front. I’m seeing 9.27A at the tail, so it might be more viable to step back down to a de-domed XM-L2 in a high bin, like the U4. I don’t think lumens loss would be so much, probably better throw since the XM-L2 can be de-domed cleanly, and about half the current draw.
Edit: Forgot to mention, I tested lux on this sliced and diced SST-40 and got 212.5Kcd for 921.95M throw. Not bad, but could be better I think.
The slicing is not as good as dedoming. It proved by you too. I got in my sold L2 1048m throw with XM-L2 U4 1A at 4,5A. Half current more throw. I will try the petrol dedome again with SST40 and put it in the new L2. The Brinyte showed very big difference between sliced 153 kcd vs dedomed 325 kcd. Same led, driver, current and everything.
I got good results taking the slicing further, but it’s a meticulous process and I didn’t repeat it on this one. I slice it first, barely clearing the bond wires, then I use a vertical slice alongside the die on 3 sides and remove the excess silicone that covers the substrate. Then I cut another vertical slice on top of the phosphor just barely clearing the bond wires so I can shave under the remaining silicone, almost getting phosphor with the blade, such that the only silicone left at all is a small rectangle covering the bond wires. This gets throw up there like a clean de-dome and leaves the bond wires protected. Hence, Slice/Dice/Shave.
My big scratch built thrower is using this method for 755Kcd and 2429 lumens.
Aah. That dice thing I did not know what is it. Now it is clear!
Thanks for explanation.
Have you tried a dedome and spray with LEDprotect or whatever that stuff is?
They don’t de-dome, the dome pulls the bond wires off. I know someone that’s killed 20 or 30 SST-40’s trying different chemicals and methods.
Ouch. That’s gotta hurt.
He told me that the bond wires are a taller loop than on Cree emitters, so the dome has a stronger purchase on this longer bond wire and no matter what he does one or both wires come off with the dome. He’s pretty determined though, feel sure he’ll figure it out in the end.
As discussed in the “perfect dedome” thread i succeeded using warm nitro paint thinner , destroyed quite a few until i figure it out .
Waiting for some more emitters this week to see how good it works
My friend, those pictures are fantastic! :money_mouth_face:
It shows that as I hoped, the original pics Simon sent me are a little washed out in the grey haze. Your pictures show that it looks just as I hoped it would! :sunglasses:
I REALLY wanted to see those machining grooves showing through. :+1:
I’m thinking of finally gifting myself with an L2. I planned on shaving an SST40 for it, but now you have me questioning that, Dale. Care to go into more detail on your opinions of the dd SST40 vs dd XM-L2 in the L2?
Also, has anyone tried the Shockli 26650 cell the Richard has?
Lastly… J-Dub, do you have any idea when Simon will have the new clear L2’s ready for sale?
Thanks Dale…and you’re welcome, as are you Scott and Petar. You guys have helped me with sound advice and knowledge of all things flashlights that is far above my level. It figures mine is the one that got delayed in shipping. I’m drooling looking at the pictures of this beauty! It’s been a long time coming. First there was the “can it be done?” debate…then it was too dark and just looked grey…then they were finally able to get it looking good but the bead blasting prior to anodizing gave it the metallic look (I like that look too but not as much as this) that some refer to as silver. Finally, after all that, with this latest round of samples we have the look I was hoping for when the journey began. :student: Essentially a bare machined aluminum look that had the benefits of anodizing. I love it! :+1:
Thanks to everyone else for all the positive feedback. As you all know, none of this would have happened without BLF.
I’ll let you all know as soon as the new clear version is ready for sale. I’ve already asked Simon that but he’s pretty swamped right now so we need to give him a bit of time to respond.
gchart, for me it came down to output vs consumption where the SST-40 is concerned. I found it was pulling twice the amperage but not delivering twice the lumens. For that reason, and that reason alone, the SST-40 was chopped.
(Of course I still have it, still reconsidering, but… who knows with me from one day to the next what I’ll do, I sure don’t!)
Dang Kawi, I’m gonna have to PShop flames on that wall again!
VERY nice, Kawiboy! What a beautiful light.
A quick question… it looks like you’ve got a 17mm driver stuck in ~20mm opening. Did you use an adapter ring? Or is there a step in the opening that handles the 17mm?
Funny, I too used an 800 and saved my remaining 404’s and 20A’s. The difference really isn’t all that great anyway, so it shouldnt’ matter.
Just a reminder y’all…
There is a Convoy L2/L6 modding thread RIGHT HERE!!!
We spin out here all the time of course and that’s half the fun but all of this modding info would be well placed in said thread…Just sayin
