Coronavirus **personal experiences** thread

It’s already too late for a lot of victims.

Some more stats:

50K + corona deaths as of now.

2.56 mil pneumonia deaths in 2017

More than 2 months passed since Wuhan city closed, we are safe and don’t have to wear masks anytime anywhere. But wear masks is part of life now. There is one or two times, I found myself without mask outside, I felt embarrassed like I was naked when people stared at me.

Looking at absolute numbers as they are now doesn’t tell you where they will be at the end of the year or the end of the pandemic. Remember we’re just at the start of the pandemic and haven’t hit the peak on the exponential growth curve.

  • Projection from Epidemiologists if no mitigation measures taken (social distancing) = 2.2 million deaths in the U.S. from Covid-19.
  • U.S. has 4.25% of the world’s population.
  • If the same death rate is applied to the entire world’s population there would be 51.7 million deaths.

That sounds a bit more serious than garden variety pneumonia.

And frankly, even with all the shutdowns, I still expect worldwide deaths from Coronavirus to reach into the millions. There are a lot of heavily populated third-world countries out there with far fewer ventilators, testing and medical care than the U.S.

^^ This is where countries such as Sweden, Belarus and Brazil can give us a better idea if those projections are seriously out to lunch or not. I'm still with that German doctor who said China listened to the wrong specialists and then the whole world overreacted after special interest groups saw limitless $$$ funding possibilities for themselves if they keep the panic up which I think they did. They need to spread as much fear as possible to fund themselves handsomely.

Not true, wearing any mask or even wrapping a cotton t-shirt over your face provides significant protection from inhaling viruses.

Meds only cost $20 total

I hope you realize that in Spain people get Hydroxychloroquine Sulfate and die with the hundreds every day.
As for Z-PAK, which is Azithromycin is already used by many doctors where people are dying.

There is a reason why the WHO is not recommending a treatment before a full research is carried out, even if it is a compound that is already on the market but for a new application. It would not be the first time that the treatment is worse than the disease, often bad effects come only afterwards, many examples in the past with horrible consequences for a large amount of people.

Pretty much everybody agrees the chances it’s man made are very slim, but it doesn’t have to be man made to originate from this biolab that works on this coronavirus infested very specific bat type that is suspected to be the source of the epidemic and doesn’t exist 900 miles around except for this very lab.

Do you recognize that nobody, not a single scientist gave a valid point to refute this theory ? They obfuscate the matter by confouding man made and from the lab, wich are totally different things.

It doesn’t mean it didn’t originate from anywhere else, but NOBODY knows except you it seems.

You are the one with a narative.

The truth…now i run and hide

We are in Suffolk, about 1.5 million in the county:

Confirmed cases Deaths Updated
United States 238,320 5,827 4/2 6:37 p.m.
New York State 92,381 2,373 4/2 11:40 a.m.
New York City 51,809 1,562 4/2 6:37 p.m.
Long Island 19,333 179 4/2 3:05 p.m.
Nassau County 10,587 95 4/2 3:05 p.m.
Suffolk County 8,746 84 4/2 3:05 p.m.

In that case you have not understood my post. The principle is that I (and science in general) search for (in this case: accept) the simplest theory that corresponds with given facts, in this case that theory is: animal origin. And accepting a theory is not the same as “knowing” as you impose on me. If new data becomes available, the simplest theory that explains the facts may change.

Theories that are more complex/less likely given what is known are simply less interesting. Worth mentioning, worth investigating, but I’m not bothered with them until new data comes up that changes them to the most interesting category: simplest theory that explains the facts.

That principle prevents my head getting cluttered with unlikely unneeded theories, which includes theories based on a political agenda instead of data (in this case poorly founded blame games).

What does originating from the wuhan lab where they study coronavirus infected bats contradict the animal origin, you are perpetuating the confusion between man made and originating form the lab why are you doing that ?

I don’t know where it came from nor do i care, if it wasn’t for your outraged, self righteous response to someone who posted a link to a Tucker Carlson segment presenting the south china university study on the possible origin of the novel coronavirus i wouldn’t even have bother showing how skewed, unscientific, and patronizing your stance on the matter is.

Hum, let’s see…

Sweden: probably “healthier” and “welthier” than most of the countries, with a big country but a relatively small population, with good healthcare conditions, with people with - apparently - healthy lifestyle, used to endure colds, and cold weather regularly. They opted for a non-lockdown solution , maybe to protect economy or maybe because they think they can rely on population’s conditions to go through this.
Currently they have: 5568 diagnosed as positive; 308 deaths.
Question: are they testing as other countires too?

Belarus: a president that goes for a hokey on ice game, that says to the journalist “This is the best place to be in, this is like a refigerator! Did you see any virus flying? I didn’t!” and that recommend to drink vodka!
Currently they have: 351 diagnosed as positive; 4 deaths.
Question: are they even testing? Do they even care?

Brazil: well, this is hard for me to talk about, I’ve “lived” there, I have many people that I know there, more than in any other country…
They have one of the most [insert insult here] PR ever: a guy that doesn’t (want to) see that he has millions of poor people in “favelas” and not only, that will perish due to the lack of assistency in a fragile health care system; a guy that called this a “small cold” but that now says that it is a very “hard situation” just because he made some phone calls…; a guy that goes to the street and shakes hands and hugs fans; a guy that said that due to is past as athlete if he caught the virus it would be nothing more than a “small cold” (like if the rest of the population is the same…); a guy that doesn’t even listen to his Health Minister (that seems to be a good and informed person, fortunatelty); a guy that goes to Twitter and incentivates people to go out :person_facepalming: because the country can’t stop (true, but…) ; a guy that says “Well, we all have to die, that’s life!” .

Do you really want to take lessons from this country? :expressionless:

When Brazil starts to realize that they should have done more, when the people starts dying at home, in the streets in big numbers, it will be too late to say them “Stay at home!”

Currently they have: 8066 diagnosed as positive, 327 deaths.
Questions: will they be able to test all those that have symptoms? Will they be able to count all the deaths they have that never reached the hospitals or testing centers? Will they be able to assist the millions (!!!) that will become infected in that country alone?

We need to stop fear? True!
We need to keep the countries running? Sure!
We want to save lives? I am not so sure about that in some countries honestly…

And bear with me in another situation: fortunatelly, so far the virus hasn’t hit hard many of the poorest countries, with frail healthcare systems and poor sanitary conditions too, because when it does…there will be no curve to flatten…
I hope that I’m wrong…

The main problem with viewing the Tucker Carlson segment mentioned above as a presentation of “facts” is that Carlson falsely claimed in the segment that the Chinese study he mentioned supported the notion that the virus was “engineered” in a laboratory. That is a clear claim that the virus was produced by humans, rather than evolving in animals through natural processes. There is simply no scientific evidence supporting that conclusion, whether the allegation involves using animals in a lab or just laboratory equipment.

In fact, the evidence from scientists around the world has continued to add credence to the conclusion that the virus had an entirely natural origin. The latest research in China and the west has shown that the fact that the first reported case in humans came from Wuhan doesn’t mean the virus originated there.

An international team of researchers recently concluded that this particular virus very likely was not able to infect humans when it originated in animals. They studied its genome and found that it may have evolved for years in animals before it was capable of infecting humans, and also that it might have been present in humans for years, maybe even decades, before it was capable of making humans ill. Using a supercomputer to analyze the genome of the virus and the evolution of its protein “spikes” that enable it to bind to human cells, they also concluded that it is very, very unlikely that the virus originated in any way other than through a long evolution in animals through natural development.

Sometimes the banter in this thread makes me think of the Twilight Zone episode “The Monsters are Due On Maple Street”.

If you do not recognise the high-politics/low-facts ratio of the Tucker Carlson fragment I do not think that we get much further in this argumentation. I will stop this part of the discussion anyway, I hoped to discuss the science of the origins of the virus but we are quickly getting beyond that.

I don’t think the quest to figure out who is to blame is a very honorable one right now while emotions are high.

This.

Occam’s Razor - the simplest solution that explains the given facts is most likely to be correct.

In this case, the most likely scenario is that the Coronavirus evolved naturally and then was accidentally transferred from bats at the Wuhan fish market with no laboratory involvement. We know viruses evolve and are transferred from wild animals to humans naturally. And this provides a likely way that it happened.

Does this rule out it coming from a lab either accidentally or intentionally? … No. But there’s zero evidence to support that conclusion other than a major lab coincidentally being located in the same city.
