Not to mention that you can’t run 3 cells at 16 volts. To run 3 cells would require a driver redesign, battery tube redesign, endcap design and then you’d have a too large looking head. Since the battery tube and fancy endcap are already designed, it’s best to stay with that.
Plus 3 cells may not be enough to support 10k lumen. Not for long at least.
I prefer the current design with 4 cells running at 16v and 3 12v emitters in parallel.
yeah i think this delay/on hold status is beneficial because currently we have GT and Q8 to pay and we might get an updated specs on this light too who knows. that is why i am still interested.
I hope this UT03 project will happen. Honestly, that’s what i wish the BLF Q8 would have come out. 2S2P with 3 or 4 XHP 50/70 aiming for 10k lumen.
But this lumen race is also showing how far you can go with a small package before it melts down in your hand - Emisar D4?. The real question is how many lumen the light can sustain without stepping down because of excess heat. Peak intensity is just the woaw factor. Sustainable output is what really matters IMO and it’s not obvious to determine, even from reviews. In any case, doing it right takes some expertise.
I’d rather bet on Utorch for this triple XHP70 then Astrolux 18 led torch - especially after the S42 fiasco.
I got the MT03, which is a compact, but very bulky triple. I now have it modded with 3 XHP70.2 P2 3B and a FET+1 driver running NarsilM. I measured in the 25K lumens range, and it gets pretty hot in 30 seconds. I was signed up for 2 of these based on the price, but I dunno now. I'm pretty happy with the MT03, but I like the compactness of the UT03.
If it got on hold because of not making 500 pieces, I think 500 pieces was a stretch considering all the options out there now. Plus the XHP70's should really be XHP70.2's, specially with the SMO reflectors. The MT03 has OP's, but the beam looks great for XHP70.2's - there's no noticeable yellow corona, while the throwers I have, L6 and MT07, do have a very noticeable yellow corona with the same exact LED I used in the MT03.
The MT03 had a few quality issues, common now. Strips threads and screw heads, seems to be there way too often. All issues I could fix though. Got in the MF01 today. It's impressive, actually true to the specs for lumens and throw with good cells (VTC6 solder tops), but of course gets hot pretty quick.
So isn’t this the thread where Freeme was trying to get a feel for how many people would be interested in buying a Utorch UT03 if and when they were to be made and sold? I originally said that I was in for 1 unit but I updated that to I would be interested in 2 if and when it was to be sold. If this isn’t that thread then I apologize, I thought it was
