I bought a bunch of cheap flashlights from AliExpress - Thoughts

Howdy!
Long time no see.
My flashlight-need was in hibernation for quite some time, but lately I enlarged my collection by over 10 cheap lights from AliExpress.

Please note that I won’t post pictures since it would just be too much. If you need some very specific ones, I can make them for most lights, no problem.

No particular order.

8 LED, 26650

F82 variant
Very nice light. For the money you get a lot of flashlight!
4 Modes, hidden Turbo (double click), Hidden Strobe and red light (hold from off)
Nice cold white light. LEDs are thermally bound to case.

Triple LED, 16340

Nice small light, LEDs have Aluminum from the case underneath them, so they are cooled. Nice mode selection, no blinkyblinky
After I changed the LEDs to some with 5000K, very nice. I like this light a lot.

19 LED, 26650

Can’t say too much since I killed the driver while testing how much current it draws. Looks nice, but no aluminum beneath the LED Module, so if you don’t own a lathe (like me) and some aluminum (diam. 34.3mm, height 10-12mm), don’t buy.

55LED, 26650

Same as the aforementioned, killed the driver. Light is OK nice, good combination from flood and throw, 6x18650 batterypack included.
Needs to be modded. No real cooling, driver steps down super fast, like 5 seconds and it hits probably 20% of the initial brightness in High-Mode. Either they make this because the LEDs won’t survive or because the batteries will be damaged.
If you mod it, it could be a good light. you will need a pill that is around 81mm diameter and a new driver.

3W UV, 365nm, built in battery

Can’t say anything bad, didn’t disassemble, but works as intended and is what I bought, small, USB C recharchable, with a 365nm LED and Lens.

6 LED, 26650

Feels cheap, but has a nice tint and brightness, LEDs are thermally bound to the case. Unfortunately, blinky modes.

3 LEDs, 18500

Listing says 18350, but it is a 18500 flashlight.
Horrible light color, no material beneath the LED-board, blinky modes.
Don’t buy unless you want to modify it.

Zoom, 16340

Nice little thing, cell has the mentioned capacity (755mAh, Opus 3100), light color is not so nice. One blinky mode.
LED not thermally bound to case.

8 LED, 26650

Feels nice, blinky modes. One of the best lights here.
LEDs thermally bound to case.

3 LED, built in 18650

Looks and feels a bit cheap (because it is…), cell has somewhat true capacity (1000mAh), LEDs a thermally bound to case, hidden blinky modes. Can’t say a lot negative about this thing.
I did completely take this thing apart, but again, killed the driver. Either those drivers are super delicate or my bench power supply doesn’t give out the voltage that it’s displaying…

1 LED, SBT90.2 clone, 26650

Looks nice (got the red version), throws nice, UI is a bit weird (click for on, hold to change mode), hidden turbo (double click) and blinky modes (hold from off). LED has plenty of material beneath it, so the LED is cooled.

9 LED, 32850

Looks and feels nice, bright, LEDs have material beneath them. Had to print an adapter for 26650s to fit since I don’t trust those cheap Li-Ion cells
Blinky modes. Hidden Turbo.

1LED, 18650

MI80-S variant
Well… it’s a cheap lamp. Modified it with a new gasket around the LED and swapped the reflector with a lens - now I would call it acceptable. But very blueish light (measured 8400K).
Classic “Screw in from behind”-Pill design, LED thermally connected to pill.
Has blinky modes. Driver is like 10%, 15%, and then just direct drive. 17mm driver, so easy to change.
Was a throwback for me to the old times when modding a light was easy.

4 LED, 21700 (included)

TOWILD BC10
Feels SUPER nice. Seriously, one of the nicest feeling flashlights I ever had in my hands.
21700 has real 5Ah, but the light is glued together, can’t get bezel or bat-tube off.
I paid ~26 US Pesos for it which I am quite happy about, probably wouldn’t buy it for the $45 that it costs now. You can get similar lights from Sofirn for less.

That’s it for now, If I had to choose one cheap one, it would be the F82, first one in the list. The Towild is super nice, but only for the price I paid.

Since I discovered that Convoy has an online store now, I have already ordered parts for $130 and will try to change some of the LEDs and drivers in a way that the original USB C Charging still works.
Also I ordered 150 3535 LEDs from AliExpress… 100 stücke 3535 led 45mil Zener diode High power 2W 3000K 5700K Keramik substrat volle spektrum - AliExpress 39 and 50 stücke/sphwh1l3d30cd4rtm3 3535 neutrale 5000k weiße LED-Perlen 5w hohe Leistung lh351b - AliExpress 502 so that I can change all the LEDs if I want to.

I am quite positively surprised about this newer generation of cheap flashlights. If they would finally ditch the idea that anyone needs those blinky modes most of those lights would be great.
I expected more LED Modules hovering over air to be honest.

So far, if you have questions, ask!
Maybe this helps one or two people.

Best regards
Felix

Thanks for posting this! I had thought about doing a similar post with the lights I’ve bought from AE over time but haven’t gotten around to it.

I think this one is a hidden gem of AE, at least for the $15 I paid (USD, no battery). It’s my farthest throwing light. I don’t find the UI to be weird other than hold for strobe, which is moonlight on many other UIs.

I have two and emitter swapped one. A downside is there is a dimple in the shelf right under the LED - perhaps an artefact from machining.

3 Thanks

May I ask with what you did the emitter swap?
I don’t have too much interest in throwers, so putting in a bigger LED like a FC40 or XHP70.3 is more compelling for me.

1 Thank

I put in an SFT40 6500K. I lost my notes on what effect that had on throw. I actually have two of these lights, one stock and one swapped. I could test candela again if anyone else cares.

I think that would be an interesting mod. My thought is one could find a Convoy boost driver that fits easily enough, but I haven’t looked into it.

2 Thanks

Excellent, congrats !

Some of them are looking pretty good !

Are there any of these that have no PWM? The one with SBT shows hard flicker even in promo video.

Also I wonder if there some flashlights with not that arctic blue light? At least 5000K?

1 Thank

I like the looks of this one…

You got it for about $26?
That seems like a great deal.
Any idea what the emitters are?

1 Thank

Has 5280K but only 65CRI but I still like the light.
But hard PWM on camera

5400K, CRI 68
Also quite pleasant, no PWM

Some of the multi-LED lights have no blueish white light but are in the 6000K region. THe F82 for example or this one Leistungs starke led taschenlampe 8 xpg starkes licht kleine fackel tragbare mehrfarbige laterne TYPE-C usb wiederauf ladbare camping lampe im freien - AliExpress 39

Kelvin and CRI measured with the Opple LightMaster 3, so not super accurate

And even the one you mentioned: Xiwang fire bt90 5000lm LED-Taschenlampe 50w leistungs starke starke Licht Langstrecken-Taschenlampe USB C wiederauf ladbare 18650/26650 Lade lampe - AliExpress 39
No visible PWM on camera (Pixel 6 Pro)

Since I can’t open the light, I can only trust the seller:

4 Thanks

:+1:

Im really curious about how the SBT90.2 clone does. How bright and how much beam intensity? Did you test or review these yet?

My Opple LightMaster 3 says it’s 30k lux from 1m away

vs Sofirn SP36

vs Convoy C8

vs Sofirn IF22A

To put her in her place:
vs Convoy L2 with XPL Hi (also 30k lux @ 1m)

1 Thank

I ordered this F82, just for fun, for 13 euros.

Maybe I can put it in the oven for nice brown color and do Emitter swap and put another driver in, could be a nice light for giving it to friends or something.

1 Thank

Actually doesn’t look bad. I seen some for sale for cheap on AE. I personally have real sbt90.2 lights but for casual users it might be ideal

I remembered that I made a bunch of pictures of one light and one from another, so I don’t want to hold them back:

For this light: Super helle LED-Taschenlampe wiederauf ladbare 5100lm leistungs starke taktische Taschenlampe verwenden 32850 Batterie Outdoor-Notfall Camping Laterne - AliExpress 39

All I did was to add some more thermal paste and build an 26650 to 32850 adapter:

Yes, that is solid 10mm copper, I had nothing else laying around

And for this light: 1100lm leistungs starke edc LED Taschenlampe USB wiederauf ladbare taktische Taschenlampe mit 18650 eingebauten Batterie Outdoor Camping Angel laterne - AliExpress 39

THe Module has a USB Output and 4 little blue LEDs to show the left over capacity - you can see the 4 LEDs up on top in front of the USB port.
They are annoyingly bright! The LEDs all have just one resistor, so if you are as deep into this light as I was, change the resistor if you can!

I am not sure if it is possible to get this light together again, but since the driver is toast, I will never know…

can you share some beamshots of this light? looks interesting. Does it have the UI where you have to cycle through all the modes to turn it off?

Also do you think the led can be modded on this light?

Sure!

Quite a good Zoom, nearly as wide as an SK98 (with an XM-L2) but much more focussed since the LED Chip is much smaller.
I already changed the LED with this one: Laserlampenperlen 20W 15W 8W warme Farbe natürliches Platingrün blau 5A LED SMD5050 Chip geeignet für Taschenlampe Scheinwerfer Grubenlampe - AliExpress 39 (Natural white), but it got a little damaged after the soldering process (from 20mm to 16mm MCPCB) from wiping away the flux. IPA seeped underneath the clear stuff and got to the phosphor.
Also the clear surroundings of the LED Chip are shown in the beam.
I ordered a Luminus SFT-12 on 16mm DTP Copper for this light in hopes that the beam will be better.

But overall, it is not a bad light aside the no-aluminum below the LED and the one blinky mode.

These are better then expected. Makes Wurkkos look way over priced.

Wow, very underrated lights here.

I would love to see Convoy investing more in host design, because these cheap lights have a better looking to me.

Nice to know of this one! If you can get it for under $20,- it already looks like a nice and affordable thrower, straight out of the box, but also at a price that it is worth to mod it/use it as a host. Build quality looks alright on the photos?!

The UI seems to be usable/acceptable (at least no strobe/SOS in main mode cycle), but maybe even a driver swab would be possible, if you can find one with a side switch and that fits. (I would be willing to sacrifice the USB charging function for that.)

Currently the price is not super low, but I will keep an eye on it and if there is a good deal, I might buy one or two. Could be fun modding material!
