Leatherman Sidekick or Ganzo 301 or other multi tool?

One factor to check on any warranty is where you have to ship it to to get the warranty, as inevitably you will pay to ship it back to the warranty depot. If it leaves your country of residence, then you have to consider if the package when returned will incur taxes, duties, brokerage, and handling fees for you to get it back again. If that happens, then you have to weigh the cost of warranty against the cost of simply getting a new item and not having to wait for weeks or perhaps even months.

Fortunately for Leatherman owners in North AMerica, there are both US and Canadian based warranty return points, so that is indeed a positive factor. If you take the case of the $38.00 leatherman, it will cost you about $15.00 to send it across the country, and less if you live in Eastern Canada, so still worth it for most.

For any of the knives and MT’s I have bought from China, they are all considered disposable items no matter what I paid, I’m guessing most here feel the same.

In EU basic warranty on most of goods must be 24 months, so, if after two years of active use one of the LM tools fail, then Im all fine with paying few bucks to get it shipped in for replacement :D!

So 38$ is great money :) LOL my country average salary is less than 500$ and I don't consider anyone should give 20 years of warranty for that kind of money...

I could easily break any leatherman if I want so... I don't see the point of claiming warranty and returning product because i will spend money(for gas) and time on that even if it costs 100$. And If I really broke leatherman by pure force I really doubt they will fix or replace it(they will but I will have to pay repair anyway)

I don't expect any warranty for 30$ price.

So I am only guy defending this cool tool? Impossible that I am only one that have this tool on forum? So much ganzo knife fans here and none likes this tool?

MountainKing

Spring is firmly at its place and it can not fall off. It has function of spreading pliers jaws :)

You could live without if even if it brakes. Blades are not large... Around 6 cm. New wave and Charge tti have much larger(wider) and better blades. I don't know for side kick.

Once again 38$(34$ for me) for G301, high quality holster so you can carry around belt, and full set of bits with free shipping to your doors...

I would like to see better offer than this even in USA.

I ordered Laetharman and Victorinox products from USA before and I always paid 20$ of shipping + additional customs tax...

So for example one NewWave cost me(and probably you since you are from EU) 100$ I could buy 3×ganzo 301(black, silver and stainless steel) for that. And have each in my truck, car and atv.

You mean the Ganzo? Heck no, I love ‘em. Personally I think for the price they cost they are better value than the Leatherman, and I’m lucky as I have a work allowance to buy a new knive and multitool every 3 years. So this year I bought a Leatherman Skeletool CX and a CRKT folding knife. I hardly ever carry the CRKT that cost $80.00, but I do carry the skeletool since I made a standard 1/4” adapter after I saw this ’How To’ for the bits so I can adjust my ski bindings with a #3 Pozi drive:

A couple times now… The funny thing? I bought them used. I also told them this… They didn’t care, they fixed both issues with no questions. FREE

Well, if you make 500$ a month, dont eat, dont party, dont have family, dont have house to pay for, dont have car, use youre neighbors internet and your girlfriends name is left/right, then you might be OK with spending 38$ on Ganzo, thats your choice :D!

This is, after all, BUDGET light forum, which means, throwing money outta window aint good habit :D!

My choice is to add slightly bit more and buy something that has proven itself within decades and has no-questions-asked warranty.

Now, keep in mind that Im talking from purely theoretical point of view, given that I dont own Ganzo MT’s and neither have I had a need to use LM’s warranty service :D!

Anyway, its great that it works for you and its pitty to see that together with taxes your Leatherman cost you 100$, no way Im spending 100$ on bare tool, it should come with all bits and stuff and be toughest tool of their lineup for that money!

IF there are no viable means of gettin Leathermans without paying 2x+ over Ganzo, then sure, Ganzo is the ONLY alternative to more expensive Leathermans ;)!

Im still thinking about all-black Ganzo, staying out of sight, non-reflective, tempting… But then I think about Leatherman MUT, all black, tough beauty and all of a sudden those 20$ seems like alot for Ganzo and putting away those 20$ towards MUT seems like a great idea :D!

As you see, its a closed circle - unless someone gifts me Ganzo, Im not likely buying it before I get my Leatherman needs fulfilled :D!

OK, thats all for now, I will try to refrain from posting here and in Multi tool mania thread until I have some review to share or if I get ahold of Ganzo, or else were gonna go in circles all over again over the same questions :D!

YOU FORGOT

BTW, in a thread that is getting this detailed I wanted to throw the Kershaw into the mix,

simply because I got one a few weeks ago. I had to take it apart and do some grinding to get the liner to lock completely and safely and I took a wee bit too much off so now I have some blade play. But when I was shaving wood for kindling and feathersticks I found it had the second best serrations of all the half dozen serrated blades I have - and was only bested by the serrated blade on the Ganzo G706-2.

So is that a testimony for all the Ganzo serrated blades? I have no idea, that was only one specific task out of many possible uses, but it’s not a bad thing.

I can tell you that the serrations on that Ganzo G706 - 2 work better than most serrations that I’ve used if they’re the same on the multi-tools then that’s all to the good.

I have just discovered that I can confirm something else that is mentioned here that I just noticed for the first time regarding the ruggedness of some of the lighter models. I own a Skeletool CX, a Wave, a Blast, and the original PST II. (I also just discovered the wire strippers on the Wave’s can opener for the first time), but I also just discovered that I have bent the jaws on my Skeletool as a result of snapping pieces 3/4” pieces of of cedar sticks with it to burn for fires in my TLUD backpacking stove. I might just need that warranty now, does it cover something like this that is caused by my use (or perhaps mis-use) of it? Amazing where all this can lead you…

Edit, I thought I’d post a review on the MEC website, so may as well share it here just in case anyone in the future stumbles on the thread and has been considering the Skeletool:

I can’t believe my luck….I was still debating here and there and checking out other tools in the same price range and saw a Rebar on ebay for $50 shipped to Mauritius.

I just snapped the last one. A definete upgrade over the sidekick at the same price range will all locking tools

Thank you everyone for your contribution. It was very valuable to help me decide.

No I only got bare leatherman NewWave for that money. I think it was 60$+20$shipping + Customs tax...100$.

Additional set of original leatherman bits and puch is around 30$ + 10$ + 15$ shipping + tax

I sold NewWave for 150$ in my country, and earned some $... I Did same with Charge tti(cost me around 150$) sold for more than 200$

So guys that are not from USA should consider all mentioned additional cost if they don't have leatherman vendor(or if they vendor is to expensive).

Ganzo have place for improving G301 like better pliers that can cut thick steel wires. But notice that I messed this up with cutting really thick steel wire... I even worked successful for lets say 15 minutes. But I was jerk(like i did not have super strong regular pliers for this job in my tool box) expecting to much from this small tool. It is good for average works. For anything demanding I use real tools. Look :

MountainKing congratulations on your new tool

Abusing budget multi tools is a must, how else are you supposed to know its strongest and weakest parts :D?

MountainKing - congrats, I was about to give you advice regarding Rebar, but since it comes without scissors, I refrained from doing so.

Basically its a smaller Super Tool 300, which is good - replaceable wire cutters, big ruler, Im sure you will like it ;)!

Scissors were always optional  The sidekick does not have one anyways….Was still debating will all the advice I received and reviews I read on amazon etc. And I saw this absolute fantastic deal at $50 on ebay for the rebar. Read reviews and I especially loved the locking on every tool as opposed to the sidekick and longer blades.

There was a last one and I snapped it. Don’t know why but its still showing one available at the moment…

@luminarium iaculator: I would have bit my fingers if my tool’s pliers had this. I don’t know if same would have happened to the sidekick. Fortunately, the rebar has replaceable blades. A small + that I don’t think I will need

It might be sold out, in that case you can opt for either refund or wait week or two for it to come back in stock.
If seller offers you option to wait, then wait, because it might get relisted with higher price ;)!
My first Wingman was bought similar way - sold out, refund and week or two later it was back on sale, luckily at the same price, but later on their increased it ;)!

AFAIK it’s a ‘no questions asked’ warranty, so you should be fine.

crx is right, Leatherman are really more expensive in Europe and it’s not only because of the strange policy (1USD=1EUR) that many multinational companies apply on their product.
First I had a Leatherman Wave, the non locking version. Then one day I don’t remember why I bought the Charge TTi. I was cheaper if I bought on it on a US website with shipping cost that cost more than 25% of the product than buying from France. Still it was expensive (but I’ve done worse with custom knives in my young days) and a very complete multitool. After the charge TTi, I never got the multitool fever again. Even with Ganzo price (and I bought a Ganzo knife, I know what quality they can deliver) I don’t have the multitool fever anymore.

shitttttttttttttttt
