Leatherman Sidekick or Ganzo 301 or other multi tool?

I feel someone else bought it and the seller decided it was more profiteable to send it somewhere nearer (maybe USA) than send to Mauritius. Postinig the link might have cost me that deal…

Anyone think that is plausible?

That could be it, but it also could be that they have wrong number of their stock entered into listing.

Save that seller and check them daily, perhaps in a week or two it will be back in stock ;)!

That could be its out of stock but nobody is quoting under $16 to ship that (based on weight I suppose). I have found another deal which is over my budget but which comes with the leather sheath @ $58 shipped. I might go for it though I prefer a nylon one. Just doing a last round of ebaying before I wrap this up. I got my refund like 1 hour ago

Ok ordered it yet again! A youtube of the rebar in actual use

I’ve been wondering lately if it would be feasible to go back to the way we had to be before SOG and Leatherman, maybe it was like that in the ‘60’s? As I just can’t seem to find that ’perfect’ fit. So I’ve been looking at things like those fisherman pliers for example,

and have drooled over some the very affordable $350.00 titanium ones, but I have zero experience with them, and I suspect that anything that only has to pull a hook from the mouth of a fish may not work so well on lag bolts, but you probably catch my drift: the saw being the best example of something that just does not make it in a MT (but carrying this nice little guy

is not going to break the budget at $8.00, but is going to add more weight than the heaviest leatherman), and the MT scissors are always a bit iffy, mainly just good for cutting some moleskin for your blisters. I’m thinking along the lines that if so many of the items in a MT are a compromise, might I be better off to carry a little sack of items with me, kind of like a Hobbit Housebreaker might have. What I’m wondering then, is has anyone actually found any good single items that are simply that good that it would be worth considering carrying them all by themselves instead of having them as part of a multi tool?

Edit: I discovered that the $8.00 for that nice saw above is just for a replacement pivot screw for it, the actual saw is in the $70.00-$80.00 range depending on color, etc. Oh well, there’s the Fiskar’s 7” saw on Amazon for $12.00 I guess. I guess with Titanium pliers the cost of my Hobbit Bag is going to cost more than two or three LM Wave’s.

Tsellers just so you know, I have a cheap ebay fisherman pliers/scissors ordered. This will be the primary tool when fishing. The MT will be used for other stuff + backup in various situations.

I mainly use the Wave scissors to cut my nails. If you use that and the diamond file, you can get them looking decent if you’re not around a fingernail clipper.

Very true, in fact I suspect that might in fact be the #1 use those Swiss and LM scissors get used for. BTW, on that very topic I have found those dollar Thrum scissors that FT sells to be pretty handy as well, they seem to me to be almost the functional equivalent of the small multi tool scissors, so I bought about a dozen of them for First Aid kits.

Yeah, leather sheath will scratch your multi tool right away, since it uses studs to keep the whole thing together and they are not covered with leather/anything inside the sheath.
I covered mine with band aid tape to avoid over-scratching ruler marks on my ST300.

As a follow-up to my previous post about my bent Skeletool CX, I returned it for warranty and a replacment arrived today, very quick turn around time, kudos to Leatherman for that. Here is a quick observation that may be of assistance to some who are using the warranty return.

The problem with my tool was that I bent the plier tips out of alignment by snapping small tree branches off to burn in a Backpacking TLUD wood burning stove. It was only a couple of months old and had not been used more than a half dozen times for that one purpose. I got back a replacement that was a previously used model that had brand new plier jaws on it. The handles were noticeably more ‘lived in’ than the relatively new ones I sent back. There are even small amounts of grime in some of the recesses of the handle joints where they could not access when they wiped it down. The new one’s plier pivot screws are definetly on tight, it is so hard to deploy my spouse can barely get it pried open with her fingers. But of more concern, the liner lock bar does not seem completly to engage the tang unless you wiggle the blade. I seems to be a very small amount, but there is not much purchase there in the first place, and I have no idea if my original was the same, but now that I have noticed it, it just makes me a bit uncomfortable withal. (I can imagine Xatu slamming this thing mercilessly to test it!)

The extra wear on the handles is not a big deal, it is most noticable on the clip from lots of use by the previous owner. That’s a bit ironic as the clip would be easy to replace when they did the repair anyway. So here is my advice to anyone doing a Leatherman RMA that I take away from this:

- On the RMA form there is a check box about fixing the same tool because it has sentimental value. I wish now I had checked that option so they would have put the new pliers onto my original, almost new, handle.

- Do not assume they will send out a new replacement (that’s what I assumed I’d probably get back).

- This was the Canadian Leatherman service point, which I suspect is a third party company that contracts services to Leatherman in the USA, so YMMV.

- Given that they had a replacement to send out the same day they got mine that obviously had a problem with the pliers as well, I’m guessing that the pliers in the Skeletool are not very strong, and this is an ongoing problem for this model. (I weighed mine before I sent it back, it was 144g. The one I got back was the same, so I guess they have not been able to beef them up).

To sum it up, the previous posts about Leatherman’s warranty service are pretty much correct, and you will not get left out in the cold. However, as I own 4 Leathermen, 1 SOG, 1 Kershaw, and 2 Ganzo’s, I think I’d simply recommend to my Canadian friends to save their money and go with the Ganzo and not worry about warranty, as warranty service in my opinion just wears you down, I don’t have to energy to pursue it further with Leatherman so I’m just going to throw the Skeletool in my van and leave it there for when I have nothing else to use.

You could try to contact Leatherman directly and see whats their take on this ;)!

I wouldnt settle for dirty replacement tool with lesser visual appeal myself.

Thanks,

I’ve taken your advice and sent the the US Leatherman a copy of this. It occurred to me that they should at least be made aware of what the company that they picked to represent them in another country is doing. I don’t mean to make it sound like it was real bad, if you got something like this from a seller on the other side of the planet you’d probably be quite content, but I guess that’s why we hold the bar higher for North American and European brands.

BTW, this reminded me of a lesson I learned way back in the 80’s when those Casio barometer watches were so popular, I’d bring them back for all my friends when I passed through Hong Kong. When the first one broke, I realized that the Canadian warranty depot would probably not touch it, so on a whim, I sent it back to Japan without trying to get pre-approval under the premise it’s easier to ask forgiveness than permission. They sent back an upgraded newer model right away. That began years of sending anything that was made in Japan (Sony, Sanyo, Casio, Seiko, etc.) back to Japan if it broke even if out of warranty, and the service always surpassed what I’d get in Canada. Trouble is, if you send a Leatherman back to the USA and you do not live there, when you get it back you may end up with a hefty set of fees for customs, as well as duty and taxes.

Yeah, duty and taxes are a b*tch, especially if you have to pay some for warranty replacement units that youve spent no money on.

Couple of years ago my newly acquired(I used it only for month or two) ThinkPad laptop had to be replaced under warranty with a newer model, since mine was EOL (End Of Life product means out of production) and wasnt sold by Lenovo anymore, so they sent me newer model and of higher model line(I needed R series to be replaced and they replaced it with one generation newer T series laptop).

So, I got a call from courrier telling me that my unit has arrived and that… I will have to pay taxes for it, around 400$ or 600$, dont remember exact number :open_mouth: !

I got back to my contact person at Lenovo EMEA headquarters and explained the situation and they paid all the taxes for me lol.
Looks like it was made out of gold for them, considering that they replaced sort-of lesser model with higher end model, newer generation and spent some big dough to pay taxes :D!

The problem was that replacement unit was sent out directly from China and went straight to me through European logistics center, but said center was in customs-zone, which means it wasnt taxed while in Germany(thats where the regional warehouse was) and thus I was supposed to pay all the taxes.

Luckily Lenovo handled this, it took a while tho, bit of a runaround with local IBM service center that didnt want to aknowledge theres a build quality issue with my “old” laptop and then Chinese new year which happened to be around the time they were supposed to ship out my new laptop and then the tax issue lol, almost two months altogether to get it replaced, luckily the old one was working fine though :)!

Ganzo G302B newest model of ganzo multitool apperad on fasttech?

http://www.fasttech.com/products/1/10001881/1628502-ganzo-g302b-stainless-steel-multi-tool#

It is similar to old one but it seems to have much stronger pliers...

Hope somebody will test this tool... If it can cut steel wires I will buy one

Man man man. For that price, I’d rather get a leatherman rebar or a brand tool. Its about the same price. Granted some places like mine, I have to add shipping. But if I’m already $42 into it, might as well add the $12-15 shipping

Those 2 ones seem nice on the other hand for the price…

Does anybody know if they have locking mechanism?

They don't have locking mechanism, and they can not compare to G301 in any way.

This G302B(probably much better pliers than G301 I see that) is cheap considering free shipping, additional set of tools + belt pouch.

U can still not get leatherman new wave below 100 euros in europe (with set of tools, and belt pouch)

So guys any opinion on G302B? Did anyone tried that? Link for review or something? Even Exduct still does not have this new model.

They both have axis lock bills. Check the size on them, the 2015pb is pretty small.

Sounds like someone here could make a good business out of selling Leatherman tools to Europe in bulk. Those pliers with the soft steel don’t look like a good deal at any price. To me, Chinese steel is just fine for blades, but not so fine for tools which need a harder steel.

you mean the two models i posted have locks?
