Hi BLFers,
We mentioned a few days ago that we were planning to release the New SOFIRN budget EDC buck lights soon.
Now we have gotten the new EDC buck light prototype(SR12) from the factory and SR12 prototype has been briefly tested. But, the parameters of the prototype are still waiting for the factory to provide the data.
This SR12 is comfortable to hold and its size is very portable. Here are some comparison pictures of the SR12, SP35 and SC31 Pro. Please see below.
Sofirn SC31 pro and Sofirn SP35 have been released more than 3 years now, and we’re not sure if the two models still suitable enough for people used. After careful consideration, SOFIRN Factory decided combining the advantages of both two models in one.
Also, SOFIRN engineer just told me they have been completed the testing of the prototype, and I’ll be receiving the samples within the next three days. Before the prototype arrived, we hope to get more opinions or ideas on community.
What do you think makes a high-quality budget EDC buck flashlight? What features, specifications, and innovations would you like to see in this new flashlight? Producing a best budget light is our goal forever.
Anduril, Anduril, and Anduril. You have it already in the SP31 Pro, so please keep it on the new light.
Ditto, the regulated driver from the SP35.
Please use the ATTiny1616 (or even better, the new AVR32DD20) and standard 3-pin flashing pads in the @gchart/@thefreeman layout (ground on center, positive and signal in the extremities) – I think you do it already in the newest versions of the SP31 Pro.
Please stop using that awful SST40 LED – nowadays at least the SFT40 is the minimum acceptable. There are also other nice LEDs around (and I’m pretty sure other posters will be giving you a piece of their minds about them ) , but I’m familiar with the SFT40 and it really rocks when compared to the SST.
RGB Aux LEDs on the switch would be nice. Ditto USB-C port for charging and powerbank (aka reverse charging) capability.
Also please keep the reversible tube from the SP31 Pro, ditto the magnetic tailcap option.
That’s what I can think of for now. Thanks for asking!
I would like to see, in addition to an efficient constant-output driver:
lower CCT choice of the emitter <=5000K
18350 tube option
a rotary jog dial switch like in IF30 and/or an indexed dial around it (like in DL08) - anything that would limit the proliferation of the Morse-coded, multifunction button :-). An on/off button is great and functional but it becomes a liability when attempting to assign too many functions to it, I recon.
Might be an unpopular opinion, but I believe a simple UI version is needed if the desire is to be recommended for family and friends. Don’t get me wrong, I’d want the Anduril version but I can’t say the same for my coworker or their family.
I came to appreciate a good button and protection as well. The Emisar D3AA with a raised button retaining ring and very affirmative button press make me able to pocket carry without fear of accidental turning on.
Perfect! You are right it’s time for a refresh. Please give us the option of Anduril and a simple UI. Anduril because you can adjust the thermal limit and it has the best smooth and stepped ramps out there.
Also, no more sst40. There’s much better 5050 size or 3535 options like xhp50.3 HI, SFT40-w, sft70, or sft25R. I don’t think the 519A is good enough for a serious EDC light doesn’t throw enough or get bright enough with a regulated driver).
I also own a fair number of SC31 Pro and a few of their step siblings the Wurkkos FC11C
Currently the FC11C us my go to EDC light as it checks a few more boxes on my list of features I want.
The features I want in a single light are
1, 18650 and 18350 compatibility, Smaller for EDC but the option of swapping for a larger battery for runtime in needed.
2, Aundrul UI, mainly for the ability to customize the step settings and for battery voltage checks.
3, Regulated Driver for constant Brightness and better efficiency.
4, High CRI LED, I strongly dislike the harsh light that low CRI LED’s produce, The 519A seems like the best current option
5, Choice of warmer/neutral color temperature, My preference is strongly toward 4000K as a good tradeoff.
The current SC31 PRO only checks off the first two. The FC11C checks off everything but Anduril.
In my opinion both Anduril and a regulated driver are needed for a 18350 light to truly make the most out of the limited capacity the battery has. the FC11C is really good but I lack the ability to fine tune the brightness vrs runtime tradeoff. Only having 3 steps (not counting moonlight and turbo) is really limiting. On the other hand the ability to sustain high with only battery capacity being the limit is very impressive. My SC31 Pro lights cannot match it.
Who ever Figures out how to put all of these things into a light in the price range that these lights are in is going to have a winner and sell lots of them. We are getting closer with every new release from Sofirn and Wurkkos, Eventually one of them will make the light that I suspect lots of people really want. Just look at how much attention the FC11C got since its release and how much the SC31 pro is still recommended as a good light the try and see if you like Anduril.
Unno, I still say a nice TIR lens would be way better than a reflector. 20mm is as much of a “standard” size as you can get, and can be swapped out for anything from a narrow spotlight to a wide floodlight.
So maybe a SS bezel that unscrews and holds in the lens (and possibly a reflector of the same exact dimensions, for those who still favor reflectors) would make a customisable light as far as the beam, swappable quickly and easily, vs disassembling a glued head to get to the reflector/lens.
The only clips I don’t immediately pull off and promptly “lose” would be true deep-carry clips, one way only. I don’t intend on having a full-length tubelight sticking off a cap’s brim like some light-emitting banana, so 2-way clips for huge lights just seems retarded.
Dressing up a light in a clown-suit (aux lights, goofy blinky modes, etc.) is waaaaaaaaaaaay down my list of must-have features. They can be nice for a toy-light, but almost all of my truly must-have lights don’t have any of those “features”.
Starting from humble origins as the first entry level model, the SC31/SC31B/SC31 Pro had proven to be pretty successful, by focusing on getting the fundamentals right, and not adding superfluous features.
At the time, IIRC, the Pro was the least expensive light available with Anduril, and brought it to a wider audience at a low entry price point. The micro USB port gave way to a Type-C port.
Its cousin, the FC11, brought a high CRI emitter to the game, along with a more modern look, and magnetic tail.
I hope this next iteration is a further refinement, and not an attempt to reinvent the wheel.
Nor spring unpleasant surprises like auto lock on users.
More modern emitter. Improved driver. Updated optics. Improved clip and magnetic tail. Even some spiffed up looks.
All would be welcome, but don’t mess with the basic formula. It doesn’t need to be anything that it isn’t already.
