Thread lubricant

I would hope so. A Ford is at least 3x larger than a faucet.

That’s ok, I don’t either.

Is it though? Somebody do the math on this

According to this datasheet I found for a brand of silicone grease, it has a density of 1.0007 g/ml. Assuming that this is fairly standard, Zener’s 85 g tube would contain 84.94 ml of grease. The pictured 170 ml tube of toothpaste is almost exactly twice the size.

Guys, grams is a measurement of weight. Milliliters is a measurement of volume.

Did you read Chris100575’s post?

Good job team. We did it. Another perfect solve. Drinks are on me

I was not responding to that post. What post were you responding to.

I was responding to your post.
In Chris100575’s post, you’ll see that he converted grams to milliliters, but don’t worry, it doesn’t really matter.

The Ford XG12 is currently $15 on Amazon Amazon.com

Thats a good price for 3oz.

I’ll add that the oil found on Maglites from the factory is mineral oil.

Maglite instruction manuals recommend Vaseline for threads and O-rings.

I think using olive oil from the supermarket would work as well. I dont think you have to spent hundreds of dollars on any special lubricants.

The sole purpose of the lubricant if to make the o ring slippery so it does not grab when the tail cap passes over it.

Oh, dude, coconut oil. It smells so good, it’s good for your skin, its definitely food safe lol, and it’s legitimately an amazing plasticizer. Which could be good or bad but if you had an old dried out oring throw some coconut oil on there. Works better than actual plasticizers. And if not your hands just smell great now.

Love the idea of: Using it on your skin, being able to cook with it, and using it on your flashlights.

Bet you can’t do that with Ford electrical grease. LOL

Not more than once lol

I’m joking but I’m also kinda not joking, I for real used to use coconut oil on the orings of these vaporizers I used to have. The glass mouthpiece would slide on over these two orings and you don’t want every hit to taste like a motor bearing or be inhaling warm superlube, coconut oil was perfect. But that was glass, idk how well it would do on metal or if it would damage the anondizing. It might. But it’d taste fantastic.

First post after enjoying this forum as a lurker. Great place!

I just ordered Nyogel 760G. 50g was $22 from Amazon US. My reasoning:

  • Plus: There’s safety in numbers. Flashlights are not my main hobby, so I went with the most recommended choice.
  • Plus: It was expensive compared to some others, but should last me a decade, and I can do my friend’s lights, too.
  • Plus: My three, new lights are the first enthusiast (non-Costco) lights I’ve bought in years, and while quality, they came unlubed. Looking forward to using them without feeling the threads scraping!
  • Plus?: Improvement in feel because of a damping effect? We will see.
  • Minus: Price. Otherwise, none!
1 Thank

I like the fact that the Nyogel is UV reactive. This does not impact how well it works as a lube, but a UV light shows quite clearly when you have a nice thin even coating of the lube applied.

Nifty feature, but it cost me. I ended up buying three UV lights just so I could play with the lube…

Thanks for joining the party, jr5!
Do you live near Santa Monica?
That area is super nice.

Not really. It’s fairly benign stuff. If you’re really worried, just wipe off the outside of your light with a damp cloth after you’ve added some and you’ll be fine. I wouldn’t go deliberately ingesting it or licking/sucking on a freshly-lubed light (well, I wouldn’t do that with any light regardless of lube status  ) but that goes for pretty much anything that isn’t actually food and even most foods, ingest too much and you’re going to have a bad time.

PS. Any reason you got 760D? 760G is the commonly recommended one. D seems to be the same but with a slightly lower heat tolerance (100 degrees C vs 150) which probably doesn’t matter much in lights, but in general G seems much easier to find, I couldn’t find 760D for sale in small quantities at all.

760D vs 760G

Thanks, raccoon and J.Lo! What a nice welcome.

I live in Santa Monica. SM has its good and bad, but overall it is nice. My favorite part is the weather. Most of L.A. gets too hot for me. But I love all of L.A., born and raised here.
