Excellent movie.
Yep, Full Metal Jacket is a classic.
There’s a ton of movies that I want to eventually watch, and some of them are quite old.
I usually watch newer movies, but I enjoy older ones as well. ![]()
since old movies were mentioned: today it was The Abyss.
(borrowed the DVD from the library)
- seems as though everyone in the movie did something stupid.
- the movie would have been under 30 minutes if they didn’t.
- lots of well-known actors that shout at each other a lot.
I saw Heretic (2024).

This movie is superb.
The acting is top notch, which is rare for a horror film.
Hugh Grant is amazing in this movie.
The music is excellent.
A lot of the movie is a creepy drama, but it’s captivating.
The script is very well done.
The main weak point is the ending.
The ending isn’t quite as great as the rest of the movie.
Silo
Wrong thread.
I quite liked the premise but with it being pitched at families they couldn’t really run with it. It was mostly average, carried by Jack Black, but went off a cliff in the last act. Not one to watch again.
I saw The Substance (2024).

Wow, this independent horror film is amazing!
The acting is pretty good.
Demi Moore’s performance is impressive, though her acting abilities are not as good as her stellar performance.
I know that sounds strange, but I don’t know how else to say it.
The music is superb.
Most of the movie is somewhat slow, but it’s fascinating at the same time.
I was on the edge of my seat for much of the movie.
Once the movie starts to go sideways, it has some really ridiculous scenes, especially near the end.
I see that the movie has been nominated for a lot of awards, and it’s won some awards as well.
I can see why this movie has been nominated for so many awards.
This movie has a fair amount of nudity, and when there isn’t nudity, there’s a lot of skin.
Although there’s a lot of skin in this movie, it’s done artistically, but I still wouldn’t want to watch this movie with certain family members.
I enjoyed the ending of this movie.
I watched that with my wife a couple of years back, when it ended we sat in stunned silence for a while and then spent the rest of the night talking about it. Not an easy watch but I’d highly recommend it.
I think I will watch it tonight… Merry Christmas…
Enjoy! May I suggest something to lighten the mood afterwards, Schindler’s List perhaps?
Newest gladiator, it wasn’t very good.
I always thought “Brian’s Song” or “Sophie’s Choice” were festive enough for the holidays.
Two versions of a Christmas Carol and Threads. What a Christmas Eve (??) Threads was definitely a grim thought provoker. Even though not a great movie. If Threads was of interest get the book “Nuclear War: A Scenario” by Annie Jacobson.
She did a great job of researching everything. There is about 50 pages of attributions in the back of the book. She foot noted lots of it. A more modern approach, different antagonists… but of course, the same results. Kept me up a couple of nights for sure. Still, recommended.
It gets worse the more you think about it unfortunately. I probably won’t bother to pick it up on disk
The Good Liar
A very good watch. Helen Mirren has a subtle greatness to her.
I saw Gladiator II (2024).
This movie is not that great.
The director, Ridley Scott, has directed 53 different projects that have been released.
I’ve seen Alien, Blade Runner, White Squall, G.I. Jane, Gladiator, Hannibal, Black Hawk Down, American Gangster, Robin Hood (2010), Prometheus, The Martian, Alien: Covenant, and Gladiator II.
I might have seen Legend.
Out of all of those, except for perhaps Legend, Gladiator II is the worst of the lot.
The acting in Gladiator II is good, but the script is uninspired and most of the dramatic scenes are boring.
The music is excellent, when present.
Some of the action scenes are mildly entertaining, but they cannot save this film.
I am reminded of a review of the movie Chocolat (2000) by Jimmy Fallon, which can be applied to Gladiator II.
“The movie Chocolat was so choca-long and choca-boring, that I want my choca-money back.”
