Just received my grey D1s today, and can’t wait for darkness so I can see the beautiful 5D tint in action!

There’s one issue I’ve got though – the switch is a lot stiffer than the ones on my D1 and D4, and requires far more pressure for it to click. Is there any way to (easily) change that?

Weird, first I’ve heard of the switch being any different. Has anyone else noticed that?

It takes about twice as much pressure to press than the switches of the other two Emisar lights. Not a huge problem, but if there’s an easy solution to make the switch more responsive I’d like to try it.

Maybe they changed the switches and we’ll see the stiffer one used across the line?
Maybe it’s meant as a workaround for the problems with accidental activation?

Just guessing…

It did actually occur to me that it makes it less likely for the light to turn on in my pocket (which has happened twice with the D1). Maybe I’ll leave it and see how I get on with with a harder press.

I know some people have griped about how the Emisar lights feel in – hand, so I thought I’d show this…

I was using some blue Sugru for another project (un-cured silicone) and had quite a bit left over, so I rolled it into the handle (battery tube) of my D1s. Worked out pretty neat, especially seeing as how the nice blue color ano wasn’t offered in this light.

I rolled my ball of Sugru and wrapped it around the middle of the tube, then rolled it out on the counter like a pastry roller til it filled the major part of the tube, using a little water on the counter top to make it smooth. Wink So now my D1s has a silicone insulated grip panel. Big Smile

My D1S switch feels about the same as my D1 and D4

Sugru is not a thing I’d expect as a tube wrap. That must have required a lot more care than a common shrink wrap. It looks like it fills in the grooves nicely though, as if they weren’t even there.

For quite a while I’ve been looking at different compact size thrower lights ($30-$60) to find the best combination of distance and pocket-ability.

The D1S is still the most compact sized production thrower currently available for under $60 in it’s range class (700-800 meters)

Here’s the ones I’m considering:
………………………………………………………………Length mm…..Head mm…….Distance (mfg. spec.)

  • Emisar D1S………..18650………..XPL-HI………….127……………50………………..720m
  • Maeerxu M8………..26650……….XPL-HI…………..142……………54………………..800m
  • Utorch UT02……….26650……….XHP-35 HI………148……………59………………..700m
  • Catapault V6……….26650……….XHP-35 HI………132……………58………………..750m

It has about the same range as the others but it’s the smallest size. And even more compact having the thinner 18650 tube.
So it comes out on top if compact size for pocket carry is your main concern. I’m leaning more and more towards this one.

I’ve started a discussion thread on the subject: http://budgetlightforum.com/node/59699

Thanks for posting, interesting stuff, didn’t know about it.
Is this it? https://www.homedepot.com/p/Sugru-0-88-oz-Multicolored-Mouldable-Glue-5-...

Is it removable after it’s cured?

.
If I get a D1S I’ll put some of these silicone “Vape Bands” on the tube.
They make a real nice grip for a smooth tube. They’re mostly perfect size for 18650 tubes.

Fasttech has hundreds of them. https://www.fasttech.com/category/0/-/-/p/1?sort=r&keywords=vape+band

I tried to remove the switch covers on both my D1 and D1s to see what’s going on underneath. The difference is definitely very noticeable, and you wouldn’t be able to miss it.

Unfortunately, I ripped the rubber switch cover of the D1, thinking it would be a good idea to try and pull it out with a pair of needle nose pliers. What do I need to look for when I order a new one? I assume they’re pretty standard – are there any UK suppliers?

You may try writing directly to Hank at Intl-Outdoor, keep it OEM.

Sounds like a plan – I’ve already had three lights from there, and I’m sure I’ll be coming back for more! Smile

It’s necessary to remove the switch cover retaining ring first, by carefully prying it up with an X-Acto blade or similar, rotating it around the edge to gently pop it up.

Thanks for posting, I wonder if you got the last remaining grey one, only Matte Black showing now.

I would have maybe jumped on a grey one, not sure I like the look of that Matte Black, kind of looks like a dirty chalkboard!

I am curious how I will like the chalky ano. Maybe they are selling the stock and switching to the smooth ano, than the joke is on me.

I didn’t like it at first, but after a bit of use it becomes a lot smoother. It feels more like stone than metal, and it’s actually quite nice.

Thanks. It will not be an edc light living in my pocket, so I think I will be ok with it also.

After months of deciding I finally wanted to get a D4, but I’m only interested in the green color, and just my luck now it looks like the green is no longer available, it’s not showing as a color option anymore for the D4 anywhere. Angry

I prefer the look of the smooth black , but I like the feel of the Matt black ,
I’m struggling to see why people call it chalky Question

I’m with you Nev, even my 84 yr old Mom didn’t find it chalky at all, she liked the feel of it.

It’s described as chalky because it objectively feels chalky. My D1S has the roughest finish by far of any light I own. Whether or not you like a chalky finish is a separate issue.
