I did some research about the perfect parabola on my own, and it seem that we are just a little bit of in our measures..
I came in contact whit Bob from a math forum, and we discussed the parabolic equation, and this is the tread:

http://www.mathisfunforum.com/viewtopic.php?id=23575

When the diameter is 120mm the depth for a perfect parabolic diagram is 92,63mm (rounded upwards to 93mm for simplicity),
not 112mm taken from an upscaled TN42 design..

Maybe it can give us an edge? Wink

Ok guys so I have done some calculations trying to figure out exactly how the dimensions of the reflector would work.
This isn’t a ray trace and it will not show how one reflector might perform better than another (based on size of LED and distance from LED to reflector curface)
But what it can do is show you how tall or wide you might want your reflector, and the distance from the LED to the closest point on the reflector (making this bigger will reduce corona around the hotspot for a more collimated beam)

Here are the equations you can input to desmos calculator (you can copy paste these right in, one box each):
https://www.desmos.com/calculator
y=s\cdot x^2-\frac{.25}{s}
y=-x-\frac{.5}{s}
y=x-\frac{.5}{s}
s=0.03 (for this one you will want to click the number at the end of the slider and set it to 0 <= s <= 0.2 step=0.005)
y=0
-60 < x < 60 (diameter that you want your reflector to be, in this case 120mm) (you can also just do lines like in the image if you want to see better)

Now what you can do is move the S slider back and forth to change the size of the reflector.
You will see that the reflector is sitting slightly below y=0, this is because the LED will be centered at (0,0) and anything below y=0 will not be used at all by the LED, since the LED cannot project light behind it.
Changing S will adjust the shape to be deeper or shallower, and you can see the height of the reflector is from y=0 to the point where the parabola intersects the vertical X lines we put in.

——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

In the screenshot I took, the reflector is 100mm deep, 120mm diameter, and it has almost 34mm opening at the bottom. Green and blue lines are unnecessary but they show that the 45 degree tangent is always on the line y=0, so no matter how big or small your make your reflector it will always be focused at the LED at 0,0. Getting the height is really easy then, since you start at y=0 and measure upwards.

——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

Another way you can use this set of equations is by setting y=the height you want your reflector to be, and adjust S to see the diameter (where the parabola intersects the y line) and that will show you the shpae of the reflector, how much of it is being used, etc. Remember the part of the parabola below y=0 will never be used for reflecting light, so it is just dead space.
Hopefully this helps someone design their own reflector or something Smile

Regarding the manufacturer of the lovely IM reflector, could it be Nata?

A bit of detective work led me to this idea:

The smaller xml10 reflector Here is exactly the same as the Cutter xml10r Here The manufacturer is listed as Nata on the Cutter site and the image is the same on both IM and Cutter pages.

Might be worth someone with the language skills that I lack contacting Nata?

Hope this helps

So it turns out the IM reflector I have mentions is manufactured in China.  I got the following response from IM:

“We are willing to do optical ray tracing analysis on other LED options on the 100-1332 reflector.
It is a specular, ultra bright finish, (no facets or flutes).

Attached is a sketch of the dimensions and interface.  Please send to me a drawing of the LED/reflector interface you are looking for.

After agreement on the modification requested we can then quote to you min order, price and lead time.  Lead time would be 6 weeks and if we can receive the order this week we could deliver before new year.

Yes, reflectors are manufactured by a medical surgery light optical manufacturer in China.  We have an NDA in place and orders direct to the manufacturer would not be possible as we own and produce the designs.  They use a Swiss M&M machine and can produce parts direct from 3D solid CAD files.  Initial parts would be C02 laser cut, before we acquire a die for the production run. “

I told IM that we are early in the Scoping/Designing phase and needed to know what the expected cd/lm would be with an XP-L Hi sized emitter.  I realize we will probably got with XHP-35 Hi, but it will be a reference point.  I feel further communication with IM should be handled by someone that is experienced in this type of stuff.  Maybe the manufacture?.  If The Miller feels someone from BLF should work with IM, I will be happy to hand off to that person and introduce them to IM.

Has anyone experience purchasing from Phoenix? http://www.phoenixelectroforms.com/index.html Electoformed reflectors are pretty high end but who knows.

They have some promising looking stuff.  Someone needs to get with them and see what they can offer.

Nice! Was about time though

And ofc i am interested

XHP35Hi high CRI vs a good W2/3…especialy since it would be a long term project…aint sure about that, especialy with those new coming xpl2 and future xpl2 hi

in a 94mm the picture under so-so reflector a dded V5 deals nearly 650k cds at 5 amps

I have still to dismantle the TN42 to test it out with a nice w2

I’m ok with 8 cells, but it better be one hell of a thrower!
You guys planning on cracking the 1Mcd with that 12 cm reflector?

If the price is decent…I’m in!

Cheers

Edit : Please don’t start an interest list , it will turn into chaos with the expected results

Dang dude, you are really pushing the limits here. Two custom and unusual light projects at the same time! Heck yeah, I am in!

Keep this up and make the work… you will generate some real BLF envy.

The debate is lumen vs throw. It will be a big light so will we be happy with a 1400 lumen XP-L HI and try to hit 1Mcd?, or will we settle for 700kcd with a 2000+ lumen XHP35?, or go 4000 lumen / 300kcd with a XHP70? (numbers are a very fast guess)

My first feeling is that in a light this big I expect more than 2000 lumen, even though that implies that maximum throw for the reflector will not be reached.

I’m in for a couple high quality hosts IF you can get them made first, before the multitude of requests and idea’s and other BS start’s flowing in, I have the drivers, boards and LED’s already.

It can’t be that hard just copy the TN42 with a bigger reflector and keep the carrier 4S, easy peasy, then just slap BLF on the side? If you have too?

Let the games begin! Facepalm

+1

It is usually a compromise between lumens and lux. One direction to go is multiple reflectors/emitters, like a bigger TM16GT. This way one can get lumens and lux as long as the separate reflectors make good use of the available area and are driven well.

Too much unsure so I will start keeping the interest list later down the path Wink
For now just think along

Basic ways the same as the Q8:
Designs open source
No money/profit for the team, just the fun of doing it
Open about and for as much as possible Smile

I’m interested too…but…where does it end, lol? Instead of starting with a 120mm reflector why not a 160mm? It’s best to start big instead of small due to the fact that newer, bigger, and better will be out before you know it. It’ll take a little longer for a manufacturer to best it if you build it big. The Eagletac M25C2 Turbo that I modded with a fet and dedomed XM-L2 U4 1A has a 92mm reflector and does 636,763cd. My wife calls it the plunger because the head is so much bigger than the body but it throws like crazy. I’d still like to be able to hold the light with one hand though, so 160mm may be out of the question…unless a handle is added…

Just need to get them to not cut out the base like above.

Would prefer 4 cells instead of 8 (in fact not interested at all if 8 cells). Go for max lux over lumens (plenty of flooders or compromise beam lights around).

Is it not too deep? It’s just a question…I’m not into the whole measuring the angle of the beam thing…it just looks really deep to me. I guess that would product more of a spot?…than spill?
