3.85A sounds strange to me.  I called TF engineer.

he told me 2.6 2.8A is the highest he can do.

i will check again.

BTY, i will update some information on the #1 post with today.

Nothing to worry about the charger, it's obviously on CV mode during the last charging stage (Constant Voltage, and steadily dropping current).

What seems not quite right is the 73% efficient driver (assuming 2.8A output / 3.8A input). Too much lost there considering it's a single cell config with closely matching battery/emitter Vf.

If direct-driven, LED would actually get the same current at 3.8A and produce around 800+ lumens on start. This is apparently not the case. So this may not be DD, but very inefficient driver?

=the=, is it possible for a close-up macro picture of the driver?

EDIT: I forgot that this is NW, so it is harder to tell based on light output. So, another thing, can you measure tailcap current AND LED current from fully charged battery?

money sent(1 neutral and 1 cool white A8, one kit, one straight torch) from Rey and some additional batteries. Can’t wait for these to get here! J) These I think will also be my last lights of the year since I’m up to 6 outstanding torch orders coming in… now if only the weather here wasn’t so cold so I could actually take a little drive out west with them and do some comparative shots.

i would like to add another light to my collection.. hopefully getting it by christmas
i want option 2 + 1 driver via DHL for me ( does the light comes with holster? if not.. it should, after all.. it’s BLF edition)

The only way to do a great work is to love what you do.

Of course the current goes down with full battery this is how cc/cv works. you have to measure the current on the beginning,it should be constant till the voltage rises...

That was my initial thought. Anyways, 500mA @3.8V did sound quite little to me.

I have to try with a fully depleted 26650..

Werner wrote:
@–the— how did you test the tailcapcurrent current? Do you have thick measuring wires?

By shorting the body and negative terminal with my DMM (in 10A measuring mode). The leads are thick enough. (Otherwise I would get too low results..)

Sure. But I'm at work at the moment, so you have to wait until the evening.

tkmckay talked with me and ordered from Aliexpress.

Not later, now. Gimme. Gimme. Flat Stare

Sorry, couldn’t resist.

I'm a bit confused WWEFAN  why is the link showing the driver .a link to a picture of the old driver /original driver ??

Is the $2.50 driver the same as in the light now or is it the ones pulled from the light ?? i'm sorry i'm just confused here ..

what driver is it ? that you're selling ? do you have a link ?

Does anyone have an idea if this driver would be ok with IMR cells?

I'm back in for the whole works in NW.  I'm sure the low amperage from the charger is the output lowering as the cell nears capacity.  On a cell drained close to 3v I'm sure the charge amperage would be 1.5A and not just 300-450mA.

As for the driver efficiency I don't give a rat's patootie since I can easily replace it with a reprogrammed Nanjg at whatever amperage I choose.  I'm very excited for this light.

I'm disappointed in the driver, but will still order.  Teetering on whether or not to order extra drivers.  Will probably order a full kit (although money is a little tight this time of year).

Charger is ok. It drops the current as the cell voltage rises.

Just tested with a XTAR 18700 2600mAh @3.2V and the charge current was 1.2A

=> the only remaining issue is the current draw on high. Rey is discussing with TF engineers about that. Hopefully they find a solution, soon.

I don’t think so:

I already had a couple other lights on order so Rey was good enough to ask if I just wanted to hold off until the A8’s were available to have it all sent out in one shipment rather than 3-4 which works better for both of us I’m sure. It’s so much easier to hide one package from the wife than the 3-4, although at this time of year I can just say: “ohhh, don’t snoop around cause I ordered you some of your xmas swag online honey….” Wink

Here you are. Note the stripped regions - I thought that it is press fit, but it was soldered to the ring..

(the driver is now one mode only, low - at least until I try to fix the pcb with conductive paint)

Although I would like to have the light sooner rather than later, it is much more important that it be done right. If we can communicate this philosophy to manufacturers it will only be to our benefit longterm.

To me it looks unregulated.

Looks that way to me too. Kinda looks like direct drive using fet with diode to drop voltage. But I'm just guessing.

BTW, sorry that the driver ripped, -the-. Hope it's fixable.

I agree with you and DrJones about the driver.

Got it fixed with conductive paint. Smile

While I was at it, I cut the negative lead (from driver to emitter) and tested current draw with two DMMs. Grey one is between the battery and driver, red one between driver and emitter. Looks pretty efficient to me. Note that this was about the highest result I got when keeping the battery in the tube (= through tail cap switch)

And here's a proof of high current draw without tailcap.

Huh?  3.0A with tailcap, but 3.9A without tailcap?  Sounds like a big loss to me?  Is there that much resistance in the tailcap?

It can be because of the wires and alligator clips too.

I'd like to think it this way: The tailcap resistance makes the current draw lower => not so overdriven. Smile
