OK the SRK is a light that comes up very often, and well when it comes up there always are people saying how poorly they are made nowadays.
Sky Ray King, a soda can flashlight. Once constructed solid, now cloned and made cheaper and cheaper. The good cooling properties are long gone and many have fake LatticeBright LEDs on a thin aluminium board driven by a poor quality thin wired driver.

So lets force out a good one like they used to be, but with modern features.

4 cells in parallel and LEDs with a 3535 footprint are non negotiable at this time.
All who want something else have to do modding of this light to achieve it.
The light will be worthy of modding and wherever possible the most mod friendly choice shall be made.

space for driver 5.1 placement

Driver board 5,1 from http://budgetlightforum.com/comment/984682#comment-984682
Here goes new info on the version 5 of the driver we aim for.
Now isn’t this a thing of beauty?
After a lot of busy PMs Pilotdog68 has created V5 of the driverboard.
Special thanks to DEL for the help and scoping!
Reason for changing:

Version 5.1 board:

Oshpark link:
https://oshpark.com/shared_projects/uK4XziVN

list of the parts to make the driver
V5.1 Parts

MCU: Atmel ATTINY85V-10SH or ATTINY85-20SU (package is important: 8S2)

FET: Manu: Vishay Siliconix, PN: SIR800DP-T1-GE3, Digikey PN: SIR800DP-T1-GE3CT-ND), PPAK SO-8

7135: a 350 mA 7135 amp regulator used for low modes (not 380 mA)

R1: 220k, 1% or better, 0805

R2: 47k, 1% or better, 0805

R3: 100k, 5% or better, 0805

R4: 47 ohm, 5% or better, 0805

R5: not populated, for an SMD indicator LED, if used

R6: 4.7 ohm, 5% or better, 0805

D1: Schottky diode, to suit pads, ex: 10v 570 kA SOD323 (Manu PN: ZLLS410TA, Digi-Key PN: ZLLS410CT-ND)

C1: 10 uF, 20% or better, X5R or better, 0805

C2: 0.1 uF, 20% or better, X7R, 0805

We cannot show the battery tube and tail since that is Thorfire design.

Cross section

At last, the outside of the head is almost good. Check the minor problem with the button not being integrated looking from the side.

.
Some details showing a driver retainer ring, the LEDboard.

NOTE: the outer edges on for example the fins (left) now nice and smoothly rounded.

Yesterday the head of engineering department was very responsive.
They are going to correct the button.
Also the bezel was corrected closer to the result of the poll (though we will ask for a flatter one)

not sure if this is the part that is going to be used
Dual footprint, quad LED copper DTP LEDboard disussion started here
Thanks Texas Ace for yet even more great additon to BLF!

There are pads for thermisistors (for accurate thermal measurements) If it it not getting worked into Narsil now it still futureproofs the LEDboard
XML and XPL footprint, rotate 45 degrees for LEDs of another footprint. Does not add costs and greatly improves the mod friendlyness.

new part and again not sure if this is the part that is going to be used
After another round of debate for the tail PCB Texas Ace has made one.
he says it best:

Texas_Ace wrote:
Ok, hopefully this is the final update needed, I measured out a SRK tailcap and this board should work in most SRK’s. I uploaded it to Oshpark, like normal it includes the source files and images.

OSHpark Q8 Multi-cell setup tailcap

The Silk screen should be pretty clear. The spring pads are 10mm.

This is the tailcap for the Q8. It is also setup to fit SkyRay kings.

This is a universal tailcap PCB that allows for any cell setup you can think of from 1s4p, 2s2p, 4s1p.

It uses 1206 fuses or 0 ohm jumper resistors to select the cell configuration.

It also has a place for a clicky switch, although it would not work when using it in 2s or 4s mode due to needing the pivot point for the tailcap.

The hole spacing is:

20mm from spring pad to spring pad square

37.5mm Mounting holes diagonally

Center pivot hole is 4mm

1s4p = 4.2v : how it will come from the factory, only one side of the driver needs to have the components installed but both would be great.
2s2p = 8.4v : for XHP50 conversion
4s1p = 16.8v : for XHP35 conversion or running 4x XM-l or XP-L in series with separate stars.
Switch = For clicky switch usage

Lets aim for at least 500 because that seems like a good number to get manufacterers interested.
Please discuss things and if you want to paticipate or just know you want one, say so.

Just posted the latest Narsil version 1.1 up on the google drive share, here: https://drive.google.com 254585Support.

It includes the changes I’ve previously posted about, but now tested, and manual updated, including:

  • re-wrote LVP handling to fix a couple bugs and handle ramping-moon mode properly

  • blink 8 times when shutting off the level by dropping below the critical level, 2.6v now (was 2.7v)

  • changed timing of LVP check to every 4 secs, not 3 secs, added a 1/4 sec delay after the drop

  • in ramping, Add double-click in Battery Check: blink out version # of firmware

  • in ramping, Add double-click on max to enter strobe modes

The manual went to 4 pages and is probably too descriptive compared to most… frownsmile

Narsil Flashlight Operation (side electronic switch)

06/25/2016 T.E. – for Narsil 2016-06-08

The user interface’s design goal is to be fast and simple, but with many advanced features to support the latest features, and

allow the user to configure the light’s operation to his/her liking. The configuration settings are stored permanently. There are

two choices for primary use: Ramping or Mode Sets, Ramping is defaulted.
.
.

Summary of Features

 Ramping – smooth 150 level ramping, simple click&hold ramps, 1 click ON to last level, 1 click OFF

 Mode Sets – Simple 1 click ON, 1 click OFF, navigate to next and previous modes

 12 mode sets to choose from, 1 to 8 modes/output levels can be configured, and then saved

 Modes can be arranged for low to hi, or hi to low

 Multiple strobe and beacon modes can be accessed, total of 5 special modes (16 Hz strobe, police strobe, bike strobe,

2 sec beacon, and 10 sec beacon)

 Low Voltage Protection (LVP) – output is decreased starting at ~3.0v, shut off at ~2.7v

 Turbo timeout can be enabled/disabled, and the time be set (works for high output levels in Ramping too)

 When power is applied, 2 blinks indicate it’s ready

 An Indicator LED (SMD LED) is supported as a locator LED and low voltage indicator

 Battery Check – blink out the voltage level (ex: 3.7v would be 3 blinks, pause, then 7 blinks)

 Lock-out feature for the side switch – enabled and disable by a special click sequence

 20 second button press safety lock-out feature (engages lock-out after 20 secs being held)

 Mode memory can be enabled to quickly restore the last used mode setting, but not recommended

 A power tail switch can be used to change modes w/memory
.
.
Configuration Settings Summary

1. Primary mode setting of Ramping or Mode Set

2. 12 sets of modes to choose from, from 1 to 7 output levels

3. Moonlight mode can be optionally added (enable/disable), and the moon output level custom set

4. Set the mode order, default is low to hi, hi to low can be enabled

5. Enable or disable mode memory

6. Enable/disable turbo timeout and sets the length of time from 30 secs to 10 minutes

7. Enable/disable the Locator LED feature (locate the flashlight in the dark)

8. Set the moon mode brightness from 1-7 (3 is recommended, but 2 may work, and 4-7 used to make it brighter)

9. Configure where Battery voltage level blinks – both on the Indicator LED and primary LED, or just the Indicator LED

10. Enable/disable the Indicator LED – disabled it if it’s not wired up or to disable it’s use completely

11. Enable/disable a power tail switch for switching modes with memory. An OTC (Off Time Cap) is not needed, but may

not work with all hardware designs.
.
.

Ramping Operation

 From OFF, click&hold ramps up with a pause at moon level — click to turn ON at last level

 From ON, click&hold ramps up, but if at max, it will ramp down – click to turn OFF

 Double-click from OFF or ON to turn on max level

 Triple-click from OFF or ON to engage Battery Check mode

.
.

Mode Set Operation

 From OFF, a click goes to 1st mode, while a click&hold (~1/3 sec) goes to last mode

 When ON, a click goes to next mode, while a click&hold goes to the previous mode

 if paused in a mode (over 1.2 secs), the mode locks in and then a click will turn the light OFF

 If you are locked in a mode, a click&hold will still work to go to previous mode, and the lock-in cancels

 in any mode, including OFF, a long hold (over 1.1 sec) will turn the 1st Strobe ON

 When in Strobe, clicks without pausing will skip to the next special mode (strobe or beacon). The special mode

navigation works just like normal modes: click&hold goes to the previous special mode, paused in a mode will lock it in

.
.
Low Voltage Protection

With the light ON, when the voltage falls below the threshold of 3.0v, it will blink three times, then drop the light down one

mode. If the current mode is the lowest mode, the battery voltage has to fall below 2.7v for the light to be turned OFF. If the

Indicator LED is enabled, it will blink three times as well every time the modes are dropped down, and will also blink twice

every 8 seconds while the light is ON. Once the light is turned OFF after low voltage has been detected, the Indicator light will

continue to blink twice every 8 seconds for 6 minutes after being turned OFF, then the light goes into power saver mode. The

Indicator LED will be turned OFF if the battery voltage is below 3.0v prior to going into power saver mode. So with a

In a Mode Set (non-ramping), from OFF, do a click quickly followed by a click&hold and keep holding for 2.5 secs. This will

engage Battery Check mode. The voltage reading of the cell will be blinked out continuously – 1 click will terminate the

voltage reading. For example, a 3.7v reading will results in 3 blinks, short pause, then 7 blinks. This pattern will continue

forever until a click terminates it.
.
.

Lock-Out Feature

Often a light will be carried in a pocket, bag or holster where the switch might be accidentally engaged. To avoid accidental

activation, sometimes the tailcap can be loosened to break the battery connection. For lights that don’t work that way, or

another method preferred (avoid wear and tear on the threading), you can enter a special sequence to lock-out the light as

follows, only available in Mode Set operation:

 From OFF, 2 clicks in quick sequence followed quickly by a click&hold. The light will blink 4 quick times to

acknowledge Lock-Out has been engaged, then the normal operation of the switch should be disabled. If you see

strobe instead of the 4 quick blinks, you know lock-out did not get set (you probably were too slow).

 To restore normal operation, do the same Lock-Out sequence (2 clicks by a click&hold). The 4 quick blinks should

appear to acknowledge the action.

For both Ramping and Mode Set operation, lock-out will automatically be activated after 20 seconds of the button being

held. This is meant as a safety precaution if physically stuck, but can also be activated manually.

When enabled, the Indicator LED can be used for the following:

 to locate the flashlight in the dark (Locator feature)

 to blink out the battery level

 as a secondary indicator of blinking when the main LED blinks

When the Locator feature is enabled, the LED can be temporarily turned OFF (only in Mode Sets), with the main LED OFF, 1

quick click followed by a click&hold til the main LED goes off. To toggle it back on, repeat the same procedure (OFF -> quick

click, click&hold). Note the locator feature is turned OFF when the light is in Lock-Out.
.
.

Configuration UI Operation

For Ramping, the button is held for 8 seconds, and for Mode Sets, the button must be held for 2.5 seconds to activate the

main Configuration UI settings. The light will blink 2 times quickly, and once slowly to indicate the Configuration UI mode is

active. There are 7 settings, listed in the table below. You can change or leave any of these settings – there’s no need to set

each one. Clicks choose the value for each setting, and each click will blink the light to acknowledge the click. If no clicks are

entered in 4 seconds, the light jumps to the next configuration setting indicated by 2 quick blinks and slow quicks of the

number for what setting it is (ex: 3 slow blinks means the 3rd setting). You can bypass the timeout by doing a click&hold to

skip to the next setting. If you continue to hold it, it will exit configuration UI settings mode altogether, indicated by 4 quick

Recent quote Tom E
“Narsil supports 12 sets of modes, plus ramping. So, you could, for example, select one mode set of 4 modes, that switch to ramping, then switch out of ramping, and you will automatically get back to your previous selected mode set of 4 modes. I’m thinking this will come in handy, so ramping can be toggled, and it’s the first configuration setting, so easy to get to.”

The second post on the above link is where the manual for how to use and configure the software on the flashlight can be found, see: http://budgetlightforum.com/comment/922763#comment-922763.

Before using this flashlight please take the time to read about how to safely treat the batteries (cells) for the flashlight here: http://budgetlightforum.com/node/45314 (Information in several languages)

The BLF Q8 is a very powerful flashlight that requires some knowledge before and during use.

The Q8 is intended to be used with button top cells.
The use of protected cells is highly recommended.
Please make sure to install the cells correct, the button in the direction of the head/LEDs.

The Q8 is a very bright flashlight, do not point the beam at others.
Never leave the flashlight ON unattended.
The Q8 is not a toy, do not let children play with it.
Hold it when in use to monitor the temperatures and turn the light off or switch to a lower mode when it starts to become really warm.
Turn the Q8 off and let it cool if it gets hot.
Use the lock-out sequence to deactivate the switch before putting the Q8 in a pocket or bag.
When you want to store the light for a longer period of time, make sure it is clean and dry and in case you want to keep cells in it, lock the current by unscrewing the battery tube a bit (turn the light on, unscrew until it goes off).

It is advised to clean the outer parts of the light periodically.
Every couple of months check the threads, adding a bit of grease to the threads if needed.

When you encounter a problem please share it in the above linked BLF Q8 thread.

The Q8 is developed with flashlight modders in mind.
If you want to modify the flashlight, make sure you know what you are doing and/or start a thread on budgetlightforum.com on your planned mod, the friendly and experienced community will surely help you with solid advice.

And above all, enjoy this beast of a light!

BLF Q8
This flashlight is completely designed and developed by flashlight enthusiasts from around the world, gathered on the website BudgetLightForum.com
The result is a highly versatile flashlight.

It can be powered by one to four 18650 Lithium Ion batteries and is controlled by an easy to use electronic side switch.
The four high performance neutral white Cree XPL LEDs are mounted on a copper plate for maximum light output and reliability.

The custom built circuit board for the Q8 allows the light to operate from below 1 lumen firefly mode to a massive 4000+ lumens.

Very high frequency insures no audible or visible PWM.

The features in this one flashlight makes it suitable for a lot of situations a flashlight is needed for.
Photographers, campers, fisherman, cyclist and emergency workers can fit the Q8 to a tripod for hands free use.

BLF Q8
A classic soda/soup can flashlight design, re-engineered with more functionality, power and efficiency.

It is operated with a side switch.

.

The software makes it very easy to use.
Every user can choose to configure how the BLF Q8 works:

moon/firefly, brightness from barely visible to very low

how many modes the light has
the order of the modes (from hi to low or low to high)

ramping instead of modes (smooth gliding between 150 brightness levels with a click and hold. The light stays in the desired brightness level when the switch is released.)

5 strobe and beacon blinking modes yes or no
to read out voltage of the batteries

The light is safe with features to prevent parasitic drain to avoid depleting the battery when not in use.

lock out of the switch, this prevents accidental turning the light on.

low battery voltage step down and cut off to prevent battery damage.

User configured Turbo timer step down to avoid heat issues.

When the switch is not locked out by user and is pressed for 20 seconds it will automatically lock out and turn the light off, to make sure it will not go on when put in a bag or pocket.

Nice initiative! But if the idea is going to be a new design by a manufacturer, I see a thousand good reasons to have a good conversation with kronological about it, to avoid the many pitfalls.

I like the idea of Thorfire making it more than a deal with Fasttech. I think I remember that attempts of group buys with discount never worked with Fasttech.

If it is designed from scratch, a version can be made with a 4mm shelf that is continuous with the body, and separate ledboards screwed on top of it, that would be very versatile, and good for the heat path! The driver could simply be the Kronos X5/X6 driver expanded to the SRK-size board. A (elegant) handle would be a great extra!

Depending on how it turns out, I’m in

Nice idea.

Wouldn’t it better with a copper shelf instead of brass?

PM send to Toykeeper
PM send to Thorfire

And yes agree let’s make the shelf an integral part of the housing and 4mm thick

How about the famous PD68 tailcap?

The Supfire M6 and Roche M170 both have an integrated shelf, the former being around the same price as you propose.

Great idea, always wanted a good SRK. However I would go with an electronic switch version and forget the lighted tailcap.

I’m interested. I’m short on funds, so can’t commit to anything yet, but I like it. One thing I’d like to suggest, though. I know a lot of people like tail clicky for lockout, but I’d rather see lockout through the UI with the side e-switch. It works well on the Olight S20-L2, IMHO. And it will cut down on the major design changes that need to be done to the light.

yes, hence the reason for aiming at that pricepoint. if they can do it so can we Wink
An integrated shelf is also a nice cost reductor compared to copper or brass screwins.

And as far as group buys, yes it is my first, however I do have some experience with dealing with Azian companies.
This is my idea and basic design,
Asus was not keen om making it, but I was sure this would be a great idea.

Hi The Miller,

If you keep the interest list in the second post, every single update of the list will generate update-mails to thread-subsribers and the updated-button in the recent posts page will direct to that 2nd post every time, instead of the really new posts.

Updates to the OP will not do that, so it is better to keep the list there.

Well the Supfire M6 for 40 USD is just the basic version, if you want the “pimped version” with higher output (4000 lumens) and better FW you must add another 50 USD!

I would not recommend to go for a lighted tailcap, but It would be great to have a choice of LED type (Nichia for the photographers and those who want the natural colors or Cree´s for maximum output)

Anyway i´m interested! I was tempted many times to get me such a can but resisted because I din´t want the cheap latticebright LEDs….

Yes the tail switch is ditched for lock out via the side switch, cheaper to make, less parts so no brainer.

Will update OP now

Interesting…but with all the extras you have in mind I guess it will never become reality.

the only two main differences wth the original SRK are the integrated shelf and cell status via side witch.

We are basically asing Thorfire to make a new light, based on proven design, proven pularity, known sale of first batch. They can up the price for their own branded ones and have the best SRK available, we would recommend that instead of the Supfire.
I think whoever i going to build this light is offered a great deal but I would love to see a Happy box SRK arrive Wink

One more idea from the peanut gallery. Probably not for this group buy, but maybe in the future. A “mini” SRK with 4P 14500 and 4x XPL HI V3 emitters! Integrated shelf should dissipate heat well enough. Smaller reflector size would ensure less throw, but who ever bought SRK for throw anyway? Sizing it down to 4× 14500 would make it pocketable, and with the 4x XPL HI V3 emitters, it would still be awesomely bright! A lot of the longer standing members already have SRK-size SRK’s (LOL), but the smaller size would make it unique, and possibly more would be on board for one. Then again, maybe I’m the only one. Silly

One note about the size: the ratio of diameter/length of a 14500 is almost exactly the same as 18650, so the entire body design of the SRK could just be scaled down a bit and still look and function the same. Nothing new to design, really. Upgrade the driver and LEDs of course, just like we’re talking about here.

Hahaha oh yeah a cute little baby SRK
I hope we are getting a nice thing going here and can indeed follow that up with a smaller version.

How a about a name for this current BLF Premium Soupcan?

That form factor would be very very cool, I’m all for it, but I would not like to miss out the chance to make it 4S on Eneloops (+alkalines for backup): the energy density will be a little less, but the batteries are safe and available everywhere. And you have 4.8V nominal and great current capability (at 10A you still have over 4V to play with) to make it a real hotrod.

Two please! I was just showing a friend some SRK videos—one will be a gift for him.

Some thoughts:

  • Nichia 219C — Yes!
  • Bistro UI — Yes!
  • lockout via side switch — Yes!
  • tripod mount?
  • anti-reflective lens?

Thank you for your efforts Miller, I hope this GB takes off quickly! Smile

I really like this idea too – in fact, I’d probably be more likely to buy a 4xAA (4S/Eneloop) version than I would a 4×18650 version. Cool

I’ll take one as long as it stays close to the original design and not get super complicated with several switches and a UI that requires a book or flow chart. I want to be able to turn it on (and it be bright) and off easily.
Thanks !!

OP updated.

And I like the idea to follow this up with a smaller baby (AA and 14500 cell) version when all goes well very much!
We should have a good relationship with the manufacterer/seller by then. But lets start here Wink

And seeing how other groupbuys go, this may take some time, do not expect it in your hand anytime soon.

Could there be a ramping driver with this UI:
O 1 click on (on memorized brightness)
O double click hold second click ramping up from moon to turbo, release when brightness of choice is reached.
O triple click hold third click ramping down from turbo to moon, release when brightness of choice is reached.
This sounds like an awesome UI don’t you think?

You guys are right! What was I thinking? Make it 4S AA for Eneloops! In fact, a buck driver that could handle up to 4S Li-Ion would cover us, wouldn’t it?
