I have to report that both my switch leds have randomly decreased in intensity to about half as bright as when I first received it, and sometimes they go back to the original full brightness for a few seconds then return to this lower level, I like the lower brightness level that it has now, looks more acceptable for a switch now, but I’m wondering if they will fail later on… Sad

If they do, I will probably just solder some new resistors and leds to the board, for the people that have successfully modified the switch leds and/or resistors, where did you buy them? Interested in trying different color…

So what was the consensus as to what was causing the issue, was it the resistors or the leds?

Thanks!

Anyway, why symmetric?  If the light is off, what could any click possibly mean other than that you would like it to come on?  The only question being exactly how you'd like it to come on.  My computer also uses short click on, and long click off, well ok, short click is  also off, just not as brutal.

Does double click to turbo work from mode lock-in?  If so, or if not, that would be a nice compromise that helps.

edit: If it doesn't already, to the extent this would then be maybe a potential feature, I'd probably make it double click to advance, but either is good.

Your order number might be your tracking number. Plug it into here: https://www.aftership.com/couriers/flytexpress

Ok, checked & verified on 3 protos and 1 production light. All of them light up the LED’s, yes, all of them on moon level 1. How are you guys checking it? In room light or are you goin into a dark place? Very obvious what’s goin on in the dark on moon mode level 1. It works, it ain’t bright… smile

Flashlights are for the dark. Oh, and is setting 1 useful for anything? No, not really. laughing

Thank you for taking the time to check it on your 3 protos.
I checked mine in room light.

The timing is perfect for me. Out of the box, no problem to turn it ON or OFF like expected. The only timing that was a bit picky at first was to turn OFF the light switch = too short between the two clicks (first to turn ON, 2nd to turn OFF the Q8 and the light switch) turns the Q8 into turbo. Big Smile
But once you get it right by trials and errors, it’s not hard to remember the right timing.

Your Narsil UI is really growing on me and I’m starting to really appreciate it, but as I’m really got used to flashlights with fixed modes that are more predictable concerning runtime, I would appreciate a Narsil modification in ramping mode to always turn it ON at 100% 7135 and 0% FET, without memory.
An option to reverse the ramping in the configuration UI settings would be awesome. With 100% 7135, to preserve your vision adapted to this brightness, I would prefer to go a bit lower first with a click & hold, and have the option to go higher with a short click & hold followed by another click & hold.

Setting # : 1 :: Function : ramping mode :: Clicks : 1=disable, 2=enable, 3=reverse ::

Just relax, don’t get sucked into checking shipping status, it really does not make it come faster, but it will make it feel a lot slower f you or anybody does it.
Wait a few weeks and by the time you want to check it they have arrived Smile

Before the factory reset, when I was doing a click & hold at the same time on both flashlights, the D4 was turning ON on moonlight almost instantly and after the “moonlight + pause” it was ramping up. The Q8 was turning ON after a longer delay directly to ramp up without “moonlight + pause”.
I probably disabled the moonlight (but there is no way to do it in the manual) so I probably set it to the lowest level by mistake. It seems that the emitters weren’t even emitting light at this lowest moonlight.

D4 firmware is based on Narsil, first written by Tom, then TK worked on it, they are not the same so do not expect them to behave the same Wink

snip I would like to ask if someone with the skills might consider making a set of firmware that makes the Q8 dead simple for an untrained user.

Tom got you covered already, the use is dead simple and if your wife wants only a few modes and is used to click to switch modes, set it up ike that once and be done with it. Ramping is so intuitive you probably will not need to (but remember the first time somebody uses it they may invoke config and doing some random clicks there may change settings, not bad, but well good to know. So in our first day of playing with it, keep that manual at hand and set it up how you want, there is no need for new firmware, almost everything can be set up to personal or spouses taste Smile

Keep an eye out, and report if they do go off please, so I can add you to the OP list.
No exact reason, still thinking it is a combination of 3 things
1 some poor soldering or not enough flux like stuff used
2 unmatched LEDs
3 resistor issues
When all three are present and over a not clear threshold the switch leds stop working after a day, maybe the heat and microscopic epansion and shrinking puses the switch assembly just over the edge.

Cool to read more movement, but please I cant say enough, order and forget is the best thing to do Smile

Oh and about moon setting 1
come on, meybo one doesn’t use it (nobody forces you to) it is very cool to set it up at 1 and just see the LEDs fainly shine. A moon or low mode that is too bright seems like a point of real annoyance, but LOL being able to set up a moon so faint as in the Q8 is just flipping awesome, lumens Q8: from 0.01 all the way up to 5000 to 6000, just plain cool, and then after seeing it, just make it 2 or 3 and have 0.1 as moon.

For those of you in the USA that do want to check Tracking of you Q8, but DO NOT know how… here is the proper procedure.

This procedure is only valid for USA orders that were shipped Priority Air Mail. The FREE Shipping option for this light. (It ‘might’ work for other counties… but I have no idea about this & cannot address that.)

  • 1. Get the Tracking Number of your order either from your Banggood Account or the Shipped email they will send you.
  • 2. Go here https://www.fedex.com/apps/fedextrack/ and enter the Tracking Number from step 1. Click Track. At this point it will probably say LABEL CREATED.
  • 3. Scroll down to SHIPMENT FACTS & get the Reference. This number will most likely begin with YT
  • 4. Then go here http://www.17track.net/en and enter the Reference from step 3. Click Track. Scroll down to see movement.

Once the package actually ships, movement will show in the tracking information on 17Track.
Do not be alarmed if your package sites in one place for 1 to 3 or 4 days, this just happens sometimes. It is just the way it is. Nothing to worry about.
DO NOT worry about what it says on the FEDEX Tracking. It will not show there until Fed Ex actually has the package, if then even.

17Track has been very reliable for these packages sent to the USA… all of mine have been 100%. More accurate then FedEx tracking by far.

While writing this I checked my last 2 Pre-Orders…. both above #1680… AND much to my surprise & shock they both actually show movement. It appears they have actually shipped, as in “left the building shipped”….. Shocked .. Wink
Will know for sure in a couple of day though.

So there it is if anyone likes to see where their package may be……
Enjoy.
Smile

Oh yeah. You guys talked about this before (500 pages back?) but I forgot. I just checked mine this way, and it says that it has departed the facility in Shenzhen! Woo-Hoo! It’s really moving! Party

Meanwhile, Fed-Ex still says “Shipping label has been created. The status will be updated when shipment begins to travel.” Flat Stare

Yep…. the journey of your Q8 has definately began David. Next stop will be Hong Kong…. Smile

Remember… pay no attention to what FedEx Tracking says at this point. Nothing will show on it until they have actually received the package in hand. And even then mine have not been 100%.

BUT 17Track has been 100% right to my mailbox.

Below is what one of my PreOrders shows a few minutes ago (the other was the same too)…. So these bad boys, as well as yours; are definatly on the move. Wink

I’m resisting the urge to keep checking tracking. It’ll save me a few grey hairs.

It says that my two lights should arrive by October 22nd and I’m hoping I’ll be pleasantly surprised if it takes less than three weeks.

Regardless, it’ll be fun blasting mischievous trick-or-treaters up to no good with a double-fisted wall of light!

Oh, and a request: I’d love to see a side-by-side comparison of a Q8 from the first batch and one from the next. Just curious about the subtle changes they are making after the halt.

I got my Q8 today. Very solid and awesome light for this price. Just cleaned some dust (there was very little of it) and drilled screw holes a little bigger. Threads where lubed, but adding a little extra is always a good idea. Basically perfect light right out of the box.

Big thanks to hole team! I might order couple more as a gift. Wink

Ramping and mode set operation are completely different UI's. A multi click sequence in mode sets would get confused with fast single clicks, so it's avoided. Ramping is all about press&hold or single clicks so 2X and more fast clicks is not so easily confused, unless you wanted to very quickly do ON/OFF's or OFF/ON's and make up your own strobe or something.

Just a tip on how one can make Q8 a little bit more comfortable to use. The underside area where you hold index finger can feel a bit sharp when operating the flashlight. If the 3 furthest fins had stopped halfway only to go half the circumferences, that underside area would be smoother. Olight Sr Mini Intimitator seems to be designed that way. The cooling fins stop there to make a smooth area.

As a quick fix for that I used a 17 cm long x 2.5 cm wide strip of Gorilla tape.

How does everyone track? I tracked at Fedex.com and I get a generic ‘information received’ for a few days now.
Assuming it has left their facility, I feel comfortable expecting them in two weeks…

I think the answer to that is probably “space”. That’s a big component. What would you do with all those switches in there anyway? There is a tailswitch board with a single switch on it though, designed to allow you to turn the taillight off. It mounts inside the spring.

Even if you found a micro sized dip switch, you would still need to run several tiny wires from the driver near the head, to the tail cap. Then how would you be able to twist the cap and keep the wires connected? There is no way. That’s why you don’t see them in tail caps.

Soon flashlights will need to have a locking key like some lasers Smile
This way you can go from 0 to some lumens, then turn the key and unlock insane mode.

When ramping mine up its like when i reach the top there are 1 “larger” and a smaller flash of the beam, dunno what it is but it dont bother me that much, just saying.

I got a shipping notice from Banggood! Ordered on 9/9. Tracking number doesn’t show up in 17Track.net at first, but then if I click the FedEx link it does come up. BG order says it’s “Priority Air Mail” with an ETA of 10/22 (How is that “priorty air mail”? Though I expect it will deliver sooner.) We’ll see if I win the Chinese lottery in regards to all of these reported issues.
